LBP2. How different folk handle reviews.
Archive: 25 posts
Now this isn't a big deal or anything to me. But after seeing 1 of my reviews i left on a level that was me explaining the problems imo i saw with the level & how they could make it better get deleted. "which has happened before of course too" it got me thinking. how do you handle reviews? both with giving them & reading them. Personally long as it isn't a Spam/Troll comment/Unhelpful advice ETC then i have no problem with the reviews even if they didn't like the level much just as long they actually explain what they thought was wrong in a calm mature non-hateful way. though i also think they should leave feedback on something they honestly thought was nice about the level too. It's also true not every level needs reviews like Hub levels. but if you leave reviews open then it's fair game imo. if you can't accept criticism whatsoever then you probably should at least say something about it in the level's description, that may seem silly & selfish but it's better then just deleting reviews from people who where only trying to help in their own way. Also 1 thing that is always so odd to see imo is how people rate other people's reviews. Ever heard of the people who only boo reviews just so to raise their own reviews higher up on the list? it amazes me how people will abuse the most simple features. sometimes it makes you feel that common folk just shouldn't be allowed to use such things. but ohwell, that's life. *mew As for how i personally review levels. All that i can say is that i try my best to review honestly as possible. i'm no kiss up, so it don't matter how popular somebody is, or even if they are a close friend of mine. i'll review their work honestly as possible. i'll try to point out whatever i liked and anything i disliked about it, whatever it may be. because i dono. if i were them i'd want to know if there was something that they could improve on. of course personally since i'm such a perfectionist i'm normally well aware if anything i make could be made better to the point i'm rarely completely happy with anything i make. *mew But yeah people, share how you handle reviews & your thoughts about about reviews/comments in general. PS:This is not really suppose to be a rant topic. So please try not to go overboard with explaining things that make you mad. I do not want to see people talking about only negative things here. | 2013-01-03 02:04:00 Author: Lord-Dreamerz Posts: 4261 |
With regards to my levels, I like nice descriptive reviews. Criticism isn't bad, as long as it's constructive. I really don't like one word reviews, or any reviews begging for likes..... it's a big pet peeve of mine. I'd rather have a nice lengthy review that gave some positives and negatives about my level as the top rated review, rather than an "MM pik whos with me" review. I will always boo these reviews when I see them on other levels, no matter how great the level is. Put it this way - you're unsure about whether to go see a film/buy a game/buy a dvd/buy a tractor, so you look on websites for reviews. Which ones are the most helpful ones? Yes.... the nice descriptive reviews, rather than the ones that just say "best tracter eva!!". | 2013-01-03 09:27:00 Author: Ali_Star Posts: 4085 |
Well, to be brutally honest - I don't write reviews. I tried once recently, but I just wound up with a negative rating and figured what's the point. Who the hell cares what I think, anyways. As for reviews on my own stuff, I never delete anything that is at least relevant to the level and politely worded. Meaning 'Play ma level!' or 'This level sucks. Go kill yourself' get deleted. But anything else is fine. I don't mind if people don't want to write big lengthy posts about their thoughts - not everyone enjoys writing as much as we do, and even fewer people have keyboards plugged into their PS3s. The OSK drives me nuts, if I didn't have a keyboard, I sure as hell wouldn't post anything in-game longer than a few lines. Also wish people knew the difference between 'Comments' and 'Reviews'. Reviews are for overall opinions of the level, Comments are for asking questions about how things were done, or for reporting any issues you found, or even just striking a conversation about the level if you so see fit. | 2013-01-03 13:29:00 Author: Ostler5000 Posts: 1017 |
but I just wound up with a negative rating and figured what's the point. Who the hell cares what I think, anyways. That's common. most reviews will get boos, especially ones that not are kissing up to the creator. but as long as the creator is not a big baby they will care about your reviews even if other people didn't. and even fewer people have keyboards plugged into their PS3s. The OSK drives me nuts, if I didn't have a keyboard, I sure as hell wouldn't post anything in-game longer than a few lines. Actually I never use a keyboard on my PS3 & at the same time I normally max out my review word limit... + you know what is funny? I made this topic here while on my PS3 yesterday using just my controller. Yohohoo~ *mew | 2013-01-03 14:56:00 Author: Lord-Dreamerz Posts: 4261 |
I very, very rarely delete reviews on my levels. Even if they're completely stupid or rude. I don't know the exact reason why, but I guess it's because I want to distance myself as far as possible from the brats who delete reviews and comments if they so much have one criticism, or, even worse, disable reviews and comments because they got butthurt about a few insults, or even worser, because their level stinks and they think that if players can't see all the reviews saying so then they will think the level is great, ignoring the fact that disabled reviews and comments just flat out screams "people hate this level" (Note: Not a jab at the community spotlights, more of a jab at stuff like the Progressive level). I've gotten reviews/comments like "this level stinks like a monkeys butt, just like u", "pig pacman pic pacman pig pacman's elevator", "you're an idio" and I don't delete them. I don't even delete spam on my profile. Pretty much, I only delete stuff for two reasons. a: If they have swear words or are generally very inappropriate. b: If they spoil the plots of my levels. Yes, I would delete "Wonderful movie, I really like the part where it turns out he was dead all along.", but not "OMG POO GIGGLES YOU SUX". Infer from that what you will. | 2013-01-03 19:34:00 Author: Kalawishis Posts: 928 |
I very, very rarely delete reviews on my levels. Same. Even though I could have a legit reason for deleting a review (such as the ones you mentioned), there's always the thought in my mind that other players might think I've deleted a review simply because it criticised my level. I'd know what the review originally said.... but others won't. | 2013-01-03 20:20:00 Author: Ali_Star Posts: 4085 |
I'd know what the review originally said.... but others won't. When I see deleted reviews I almost always guess it was just spam or troll nonsense that the creator deleted. And I'm happy when people delete those type of reviews/comments as it always really bugs me when I'm reading the reviews of a level and there's spam/troll junk in the way. *mew | 2013-01-03 20:25:00 Author: Lord-Dreamerz Posts: 4261 |

If you saw a Cool Page spammer with deleted reviews, would you assume the same? Or even a creator such as myself, ie someone who is an honest creator, but is still relatively unknown? *woof | 2013-01-04 09:34:00 Author: Ali_Star Posts: 4085 |
I leave reviews on levels that need them. If it's really that bad, and it's obvious to the creator, and other players, what needs to be fixed, then I see no point in adding what's already been said and done. If the level's SOOO good that I can't really say anything, then I usually just leave it. Either that or I gush like an idiot about how awesome it was, which isn't really helpful, but meh. I try my best to include advice. Like the others, I only delete reviews if they're vulgar or spam/advertisement. If it's something that's just left to hurt my feelings, I leave it because it's worth less than a deleted review in the first place. Plus people don't get the wrong idea and think I just can't take opinions. If it's an opinion and it's within reason, it's fine to me. I may not like it, but pfftnngg. My OWN reviews though, I get a little annoyed if people sort of just boo it for no reason and send it flying to the bottom. I sort of want the guy to see it if it's good advice, but I dunno, some people just do it. Either to get their review to the top or because they're mad at me (it's happened before, multiple times). BUT, the boo is useful to me in some ways. Like if there's a mean "review" (more like just a bad remark) on another person's level, I boo it, because they probably want to see all the good constructive stuff. Also if it's just more spam or like tactics, like "play my lvl sper mario bros 3 on my planet heart it" or "i like this level YAY IF YOU AGREE". That's not helpful. That's annoying. So down it goes. | 2013-01-04 12:51:00 Author: Sackpapoi Posts: 1195 |

If I see a cool page spammer with deleted reviews, my first thought but be that the reviews are honest and therefore critical of the level, and the creator (who is most likely very young and very immature) didn't like them. *neigh | 2013-01-04 15:02:00 Author: Ali_Star Posts: 4085 |

A good lesson about reviews and criticism is that you should always learn how to accept criticism. Not everybody can accept it, so that's why only negative reviews get deleted or the whole feature gets blocked for the level. I even posted this on Facebook: "If you can't accept criticism, then you shouldn't make anything at all." This includes games, movies, and TV shows. In this case, it's levels. Some people make very trashy levels, and then, they reject negative reviews because they want everyone to like it. Of course nobody is going to like junk levels. I don't mind people writing reviews pointing what's wrong with my levels. I'm not the person who rejects criticism. In fact, I actually like it when people write reviews about my levels, because I usually don't get very many plays or hearts. | 2013-01-04 18:10:00 Author: Apple2012 Posts: 1408 |
A good lesson about reviews and criticism is that you should always learn how to accept criticism. Oh my. I agree SO much. I'd rather see a whole page of hurtful reviews than a whole page of deleted ones. | 2013-01-06 02:55:00 Author: Kalawishis Posts: 928 |
I haven't had a review yet (ain't got any published levels) but I'll gladly have constructive criticism so that I know what needs improvement. | 2013-01-06 10:48:00 Author: Spanex Posts: 65 |
I personally never read reviews for any levels other than my own, because the level either loads quick enough that I don't have enough time or so slowly the reviews don't load either, but on my own reviews I'd personally like people to point out areas I could improve if possible. While it's nice to recieve "great level!" it's not very useful. I prefer more in depth stuff anyway, so I usually just ask for feedback here. | 2013-01-09 18:35:00 Author: kirbyman62 Posts: 1893 |
All I can say is never leave me a bad review. I know where you live. :kz: | 2013-01-12 17:31:00 Author: Ungreth Posts: 2130 |

On the subject reviews. Has anyone else also noticed that people also use the Yay if you agree scheme. It really quite nag's me especially when i get them on the top reviews. I personally would prefer a long winded review on my levels rather than "a yay if you did" or "yay if you did that".This is just another piece of evidence of how people continue to abuse the games features. ahh.. well we get along with it... However i usually get positive constructive reviews on my levels (phew). These reviews improve me as a creator therefore im thankful. | 2013-01-15 19:43:00 Author: Spaceraoul28 Posts: 175 |
I don't leave reviews too often. When I do, sometimes it's just praise and others it's a bit of feedback, usually only if something was outright broken. I generally reserve full level feedback for here. As for how I handle reviews on my levels...I'll find out when I get some. | 2013-01-16 03:51:00 Author: xxMATEOSxx Posts: 1787 |
Constructive criticism > Compliments > Trolling The trick is to publish new levels once every three years like me. Then you get just enough constructive criticism without the danger of it overflowing and making you want to kill yourself. I'm kidding of course. I'm still not over the few constructive tips on what to improve in my level that I got three years ago. | 2013-01-16 20:57:00 Author: FreeAim Posts: 2462 |
Right. before i have this topic closed. i'll share my opinion on the matter 1 last time. I started this topic because i was curious on how different people personally give reviews and how they read reviews. this was not really suppose to be a topic on if other people should deal with criticism or not. which some people seem to misunderstand here. especially since I prefer to not talk about harsh or negative subjects if possible. But when it comes to that matter. I have nothing against people who can't handle harsh criticism. some people are just more sensitive then others. we are all different people and there is nothing wrong with that. i just feel that if someone can't handle harsh criticism, it probably be a good idea for that person to disable reviews on their work or at least put a note on their work that's asking the players to be nice while reviewing. but overall people have a right to not accept criticism if they don't want it. and we and nobody has any right to say they don't. *mew PS: it's mostly only trolls who believe criticism that is mean & rude will make you a better person. Because remember that some people who are really gentle & sensitive can be almost destroyed by extremely unnecessary criticism. And that is a terrible thing of course. | 2013-02-16 07:03:00 Author: Lord-Dreamerz Posts: 4261 |
