Going to start my first LBPK level! Need tips!

Archive: 7 posts

Hi. Hey. Back. Sup.

So I'm finally back (after approx. several months to at least a year), and I recently got LBPK! The story levels are still as beautiful
as ever, however find the story a little rushed, and found a couple tracks quite frustrating. But my review isn't what this thread is about.

After finishing Story Mode, took a run through the Team Picks (Wintery Wonderland was personally one of my faves - good job leklack ), and goofing around with friends, I've finally got my head off the couch (meaning I was slacking off, get the metaphor? Hahahaha ) and began to make my first LBPK level. It's a race track with the Gardens theme, with a couple of twists and turns. I might upload a photo of it if possible to take one before it is published.

What I'm asking for is some guidance. What is needed in a decent level? In other words, what is it that people wanna see whilst they're making drifts and slapping their foes? I'm talking gadget placement, use of objects / decors, etc. I really wish to make a nice first impression starting off in the LBPK universe.

I hope I get some feedback soon, the first level in any LBP game is truly important to me. Hope to see you guys soon.

Free love, chronos453. ^^

UPDATE: Oh yeah, 2013. Happy New Year guys!

UPDATE 01/07/13: Thanks a bunch for the feedback, I'm making steady progress! The test runs on the track are fun, modified the weapons, and even got some jumps for spins! Oh yeah, and I also changed the theme to a land full of desserts. I can leave the Gardens theme to others. Once again, thanks. Hopefully I'll be able to release this before the end of January!

Side note: I played Journey. You should go play it. Right now.

UPDATE 01/11/13: The level is ready! Here's the link: https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=77286-Lollipop-Lane

my advice would be to go and play some of the truely great levels made so far (in story and in community) watch/read some decent tutorials and then make something that you believe is high quality. I would make a few 'crap tracks' first in create mode just to learn the system before releasing anything.2013-01-02 16:23:00

UPDATE: Oh yeah, 2013. Happy New Year guys!

First off, happy new year to you too . The best thing to do first is to ask yourself "What do I exactly want to create, and what do I want the gameplay to be like?". It's also good to brainstorm your ideas beforehand and try to get every single possible idea down before you start making your level. Because if you try to add any more ideas while you're building the level, it might not work out. And don't try to make the level as you go along either, because about 70% of the time it won't turn out as good as you was hoping for. Also, your level doesn't have to be a racer. The 3D world alone (not the new features in LBPK) should open up thousands of possibilities so be creative!

And to answer your question on what people want to see while whizzing around corners at high speed and launching missiles is creative use of props and scenery. Try and give a different perspective out of the normal to everyday objects. Don't be afraid to use things outside of their intended purpose. For example, in my level "The Forest - Eliminator", I was thinking about how broccoli in a way looks like trees (I had broccoli for dinner that day) and I happened to find a broccoli object under "Food". I dimmed the lights of the level (so you couldn't really tell it was broccoli) and planted huge pieces of broccoli everywhere until it looked like a real forest .

So be creative, and try to give a slightly different perspective to things.

Haha, I totally agree with you on the first three sentences. I really should start thinking of obstacles back in LBP2 before making them. I have about 6 dormant levels with brilliant ideas still on my moon (including Neon Deux D: )! But yeah, this seems important. Time for some pencil sketches. :l

As for the first half on the second paragraph, if you are familiar of with my work on LBP2, you don't see a lot of stickers in my levels. Oh well, gotta start now. But then I have to dive back into Story Mode for prizes and that is HARD for me... Say, do you know if the Timesaver DLC still get me the trophies? You don't have to answer of course.

Anyways, this really helps me a bunch! Thanks. You deserve a pat on the back, and a cookie. I don't know how to make a cookie, but I'll find a way.

Also, is your name on LBPC the same as your PSN? This "The Forest - Eliminator" has piqued my interest. :3

You could hit the Thanks button of his post. In fact, I'm surprised Taffey hasn't turned the thanks button into a cookie button yet.

You shouldn't worry too much about going into story mode for the prizes, it's very doable. I'm not a very good karter but I managed to get everything on normal mode.

Hmmm... broccoli looks like a tree, eh? That's exactly what I need, I'm totally stealing that idea!

Yes my PSN is the same name as my LBPC name. To anyone who is interested (no pressure) on testing it out, click here (https://karting.lbp.me/v/62ab) for the link to the level on LBPK.me. Word of advice though: stay out of last place .
