Last Frontier!

Archive: 27 posts

Hi Everyone!

I just got done creating my very first LBPK level called 'Last Frontier'. It's a space-western themed course with a number of hazards. I'd say it's difficulty is med-hard and suggested for seasoned players. Slowing down in turns can make all the difference! It's a great course for those looking for a challenge with lots of eye-candy. Also, I need some help testing it out. I ran into in-numeral bugs when creating this 'track'. I got most of them, but there are surely some lingering about. Any help, comments, and hearts would be appreciated! Here are some pics:

Hello Ender. I recently played this track and I had a blast playing i was drawn in by the visual as they are a treat to look at. Especially the craters orbiting throughout the level, all of the custom structures are a great as well. I think you captured the feeling of being in space perfectly, it really felt like i was in space, perhaps customs karts really would of sealed the deal, overall i had a blast playing track. Very nice debut track keep it I look forward to seeing your future creations.2013-01-03 20:34:00

Very good looking track and probably my favourite space themed one so far. I like the way it had specific zones... spaceship...asteroids.... etc etc. Decent race as well which competitive all the way through. Earned a heart from me - well done.

One bug... on the very last lap, the spaceship doors (just before the finish line) closed as I was flying towards them and I hit them.. drove up onto the top of the spaceship and exploded.. and I came 8th. sob. Might wanna check the logic there, let me know if you need a hand.

Lastly a question.. what technique did you use on the 'invisible track' bits? I ask because I'm about to make a video on custom courses so I'm trying to find out all the possible methods of not showing the default tracks.

Awesome! I'm stoked that you enjoyed it. Sorry about the doors! I have a player proximity sensor hooked up to a timer that holds the doors open for 10 seconds. I figured everytime that someone drove by it would actuate the doors and reset the timer. Hmm... I'm not so good at the logic aspect of the game yet.

The invisible track portion was a pain and used loads of bread crumbs. There may be an easier way, but I used the 'erase track' and put down several pieces of force field to drive on. I tried driving just like that and discovered the AI would just drive off the side as soon as they got on the force field. I found that if I put bread crumbs down over the force field they would treat it just like the track. That why I left bits of track in; made it so I didn't have to use so many dang bread crumbs.

I can share the track with you if you want it. I just don't want to leave it copy-able for too long... is there some way to share privately? Anyway thanks!

THe setpieces on this track are fantastically detailed, especially the space destroyer ship and the black hole. I figured you used force field for the invisible parts of the track, and you used breadcrumbs to make them drivable.

One major problem I ran into when driving over the space areas is quite often, when I die over those areas, I randomly get respawned a huge distance away from my point of death. Sometimes I either end up all the way in 8th place or it vaults me into 1st place. It's a known problem when you use breadcrumbs over parts of your level not any part of your track (branch or otherwise). People can cheat on these breadcrumbed parts and hit Select to manually reset themselves, allowing them to skip the entire breadcrumbed portion.

I also experienced brief moments of slowdown, possibly due to many objects in view at one time during certain parts of the level.

A suggestion I can make is the choice of music. I highly recommend using Odessa Dubstep as this track's song:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JK7JL6TNNt4

Another song that can work is the Avalonia theme. The current song, the rearrangement of the Canyons theme from LBP1, does not fit at all as a space-themed background song.

Overall, this is a very enjoyable level, and a visual experience as well. I am fairly good at working with logic, and can also offer to help you if you'd like. I can also extensively test it and try to fix the spawning issues.

You can probably lose the timer and go straight from proximity to whatever gadgets you're using on the doors. Assuming that its a piston/hinge, if you connect the prox to it you should be able to change the input option to forwards/backwards or something with a / in it. This should make it so that the closer any player is to the door, the wider they open.
((i think i've explained that right, i've said that from memory-if anyone can clarify my logic please do))

Ender.. thanks for the info and the offer, i may get back to you about that.

I'll try it! I'll have to move the proximity sensor closer to the door and expand its radius... I tried it earlier and it would just start closing too soon. I think I just got burned out and missed the obvious that night. Thanks.

EDIT:

Yeah, that bug! I tried to get rid of it, but there where two places it seemed to occur a lot. I just tried to make the AI smarter and hope they wouldn't fall off in those areas. And the lag... I just got done adding some custom carts, and cutting back on some of the star fields to compensate. It's hard to decide what else to cut out . Is there a way to share levels without leaving them open to everyone? I might just bite the bullet and leave it copyable. I dunno...

There currently is no way to make levels private, like in LBP1/2. If you do make it copyable, publish another version that is copyable, hide it somewhere in the South Pole of your earth so it cannot be easily found, and I'll let you know once I've gotten it so you can unpublish it right away.

EDIT: I can also offer to put in Kart Transformers for the space parts. I have created custom spaceships that can serve as something to which to transform.

hey there ender i really loved cruising through space! those asteroids sure were frustrating! in a good way! it's got tough AI to beat too!

i have a question, have run through about 5 times now, i'm a bit obsessive when it comes to collecting objects and i can't find everything! i'm on 57% are there any really well hidden goodies that i'm totally missing? is there something that needs blowing up?

Hey glad you liked it! I made some of the prizes unlockable for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. You may still need to get one of those slots. I also hid a gift behind one of the danger signs before the asteroid field on the far left. The other's are fairly visible if I remember right. Lots of them are custom weapons and you can even get the black hole .

i've cruised the track meticulously and i've definitely come first lots of times... i've counted 3 item bubbles; one in ful station, one on the corner after the grapple swing and one in the asteroid field... i've got 7 items to get and they aren't prize bubbles... unless you've hidden them exceptionally far away and forgotten about them!2013-01-11 13:54:00

o_o I dunno man. The only thing I can think of is you may not have gotten two of the the three top positions, each getting 3 prizes=6 and the one for looting the level which totals 7. Other than that I'm out of ideas *shrugs*

theAdipose isright ender, about changing the piston setting input from on/off to direction forawrd/backward. As long as your player proximity area is big enough it will stay open while someone is in that area. On/off with a player proximity sensor just sends one signal to move the piston once then after the timer on the pistons resets it'll close, the directional setting will adjust the pistons based on how close any player is to the sensor itself, so you want to put the sensor just before the door. If it causes you too much grief ( server lag messes up logic quite often ) at the very bottom of the piston settings or any motor settings for that matter is an option to change it to function as gameplay or scenery. Most useful, when set to gameplay anything attached to the motor/piston has a hitbox and will affect karts and dynamic objects, when set to scenery it becomes like hologram. A nice fallback in case the player sensor doesn't work or is slow someone would drive thru the material and just miss the intended visual but not be reset.

Another fallback method is to hook 2 player sensors up to an OR gate and the OR gate up to the pistons and define 2 different zones. I had similar issues with the sliding glass doors to the Little Big Depot.

Hope some of this helps

This is perfect actually. I played a few times yesterday and encountered this every other race so I'll be trying these out shortly. Thanks a bunch to you and everyone else that's given me help! I hate to admit it, but the logic is my biggest short coming in design

Ran through the track today, and have to echo everyone's comments about the look and feel of the track...it was all really cool...

Unfortunately i also have to echo the door comment as well...the doors only worked on my last lap for me.

There was something else with a funny spawn point (i'd gone off the track on a curve before the fuel station, but it dragged me all the way past the station for the respawn)...i don't recall the details well enough for that to be useful, though, i imagine.

Still...had a real good time playing, and i'll definitely give it another couple run throughs later.
