Please check out my awesome level "Family Rescue"!

You awaken in the middle of the night in a strange house and your family members missing. Suddenly a speaker in the corner of the room comes on. An evil sounding man telling you he has your family and he wants you to play a little "game" in order to keep your family alive. You then have to do a bunch of rather funny tasks that this man tell you to do in order to receive keys for locked doors.

Can you complete all 4 tasks in order to exit this crazy house and go on to rescue your family?

Thanks for reading, and please check out my level!

i had a run through this last night, left some feedback on the level itself, but i hadn't realized it was your first one, so it may have come off a bit terse, sorry about that.

What i should have said was: Congrats on making your first level! You've got some ideas here for your first time out that can be expanded on and improved in your next and next and next 'til you're putting together some really great stuff. i know the idea of puzzles/tasks was more than i'd tried in mine (really...my first level was just awful and basic as heck...i keep it on my moon as a reminder and whip).

i know i'd mentioned that the level could use some polishing in my review, but what does that mean, exactly? Sometimes it's just little stuff that can make the experience more of an environment for the player, instead of something floating in space. Two things i'll mention here, cause they're relatively easy to do:

One: a number of times, especially when you're in the left hand rooms, you can clearly see the edge of the basic create stage background (looks like a padded wall, right?). That does take away some from the image that we're in a house in the woods. What we can do is (a) change to a given background, which will take away that wall on the edge, and/or (b) sett up some cameras in that area to angle away from the left side, or (c) move everything to a more central position in stage.

Two: Your elevator doors open anytime we're close to them, even when the elevator is in motion...Well, this is a rickety old house, so some mechanical failure is expected...but... One thing we can do is, instead of just having the piston for the door wired up to a player sensor (which is what i assume you're doing now), put a microchip on the bottom of the door, inside put your player sensor, a tag sensor with a tight radius, wire them both to an And Gate and wire that to the piston. Now put a tag on the room floor near the chip (on each floor, natch). The door should only open when the player is close And the elevator has reached the floor. This is not the greatest solution, mind, but it's easy to implement, and should get you thinking along the lines of multiple inputs, which will help you a lot when making later stages.

Well, this has been a wall of text, so we'll cut here. i hope it's been helpful. Welcome to LBP and LBPC, i hope you enjoy your time here.

Oh! Before i forget, the homeless guy you have to kill for no apparent reason...yeah, that...make him a monster or demon or even (since the evil house is telling the player to cack him) an intrepid hero investigator. There's just something about that section that rubs me ten kind of wrong as it is now.

Hello, Waffleking. And I greatly appreciate you taking the time commenting and leaving your honest review!

Yeah, It is my first level, I've had the game for quite a while, but didn't really get around to actually making an online-friendly level.
I know there is indeed a lot of work to do. A lot of it is because of me, but some of it is also the game; and I honestly tried fixing some of those issues, but couldn't not find a 100%-no fail-guaranteed way. An example being that the players carry the black keys weird and a lot of times randomly break and the player has to start the whole level over. And that is a really good trick for the elevator and the background! I really appreciate that advice!

I am in the process of making a part 2. It will have the same plot-line, of course, but a different type of gameplay. This one will be based outside and will be set up kind of like an obstacle course.

Again, I really appreciate you taking the time to actually play me level all the way through, and sharing your honest thoughts with me. Thanks a lot, and I hope that you can play part 2 when it becomes up and running and see if I did well!

-Brandon.

P.S.: The whole homeless man bit can be offensive, I know. My little brother actually came up with the idea for that one and put it in. we were stumped on what to do for the fourth task and he said he'd take care of it, haha! When I asked, "why a homeless man?" he simply replied, "Well the guy is evil, and you are trying to do everything you can to save your family isn't he?"

For some reason, the homeless guy part made me want to play the level, but that's just my strange brain. Stuff like that is a general no-no for LBP. Unfortunately, the button that is supposed to kill him does not work properly when I use it. It just triggers a camera. But yeah, take some of waffles good advice and your level will have a lot more polish. Maybe check out some of LBP centrals' tutorials as well. They helped me a lot in making my recent levels.2012-12-29 09:15:00

Qued! I'll edit this post later, please f4f my level here:

thankyou
EDIT: I thought the scenario was pretty creative and Im always a big fan of hand crafted objects (like Dave the cat lol). While the logic here was pretty sound the real test comes if you can watch your friends play the level and see how they break it. Your next big challenge then is to find ways of stopping that happening. I kept making mistakes anyone could - dropping out of elevators, breaking trigger objects and even accidentally throwing objects onto the elevators losing them. Making all this idiot proof is probably going to be your biggest challenge. I thought the level ideas you have show that you've got potential to make some compelling stories in the future - getting all that logic cracked takes time and playtesting. Good Luck

Hello, Josh, and thank you for the reply!

I really appreciate you taking the time to play my level, it means a lot to me. I also appreciate your honest review

That is an odd problem that you had when playing, but I think that I may know whats wrong. Before you push the button there is a lever right by it that you have to pull to drop the bomb on him. Then you jump on the button to detonate it. Sorry, the lever is kind small and is in the very back layer, I realize now that I should've of used more tools to make everything flow in the right order. But I hope that this fixes your problem! After you kill him you get the last key which lets you go outside and end the level.

I'm not sure if you read, but I am in the process of building part 2. It will feature the continuing plot-line, but will be a different type of game-play, (more of an obstacle-course).

Again, I thank you for playing my level, I'm glad that none of the other puzzles went too horribly wrong. I hope that you can now play it all the way through, if that was the problem.

Thanks again!

-Brandon.

~~ Also, thank you Tanuki! I will check out your level!~~

I tried probably 4 or 5 times to finish this level, but every time, it glitched for one reason or another. The closest I got to finishing was after I killed the homeless guy and got the key, the key actually destroyed itself on the way to the door. Several times, trying to get the food to the cat, I accidentally threw the food on top of the elevator, forever out of reach. The movie camera at the homeless guy, you need to make it play one time only, not every time you walk near that spot.

Now that the rant is over, this level has promise. It reminds me (probably on purpose) of the SAW movies. Don't listen to others that complain about killing a homeless guy...the theme of this level is saving your family at any cost. It may raise social issues that some don't want to deal with, but it makes you think about what you would do to save your own family. I like the concept of completing various tasks in one location to progress. Not bad at all for a first level. I agree with most of the other reviews as well, but keep up the good work, and your levels will improve over time.

When you get a chance, please F4F the level in my signature, Treasure Dash.

Thank you so much, Brannayen! It really means a lot to me! Yeah, my brother and I had a lot of trouble with the keys getting stuck and breaking. I think that the problem with them is that I had a bunch of wires connected to a microchip that is on it, so I think that may screw up the key when you carry it. And thank you for your opinion and advice, I will work on the more advanced stuff a little better next time and fix cameras, I'm not used to working with cameras. I like how it reminds you on Saw, that's kinda of the feeling we were hoping for. I just wasn't sure how to go about making a level like this because you never see any on LBP. And to tell you the truth, after you kill the homeless guy you just walk outside and that's the end of the level. If you get the score bubbles I think you win the cat on the fridge and the homeless guy, haha!

Again, thank you for trying out my level, I will make the time to try our yours and give you my review. We are now in the process of part 2, so I hope that you can try it out as well when it's finished.

Thanks again,

-Brandon.
