Playstation Vita games

Archive: 42 posts

I thought it might be good to share our thought on some of the PlayStation Vita games out there.

A couple of games I've played off PS+ this week are Big Sky Infinity and Chronovolt. Big Sky is a sidescrolling shooter which is really manic and as you might expect has simple controls and is mostly about skill and reflexes. You also need to learn how to deal with different enemies so expect a lot of game overs as you get to grips with it. It's good fun, just be sure to mute the commentary in options. That guy becomes annoying really quickly. This should give you quite a few hours of entertainment if you give it a chance.

Chronovolt is a sort of 3D puzzle game, collect items affair. Roll a ball around collecting items, use special abilities , and finish a level quickly.Nothing special, I can't recommend it, found it rather boring after an hour or 2 trying it out. Not a bad effort but the fun factor isn't really there.

Through PS+ I got Gravity Rush, and while I thought the controls were obnoxious and the area restrictive at first, the mechanic does offer a great sense of freedom. It's also god darn gorgeous and has a very interesting setting. I'm only an hour or so in so I'm not the best judge. I'm worried that it might be a bit insubstantial under its glossy veneer.

Super Crate Box is pretty much available everywhere for free, but you can buy it for three bucks on PSN. Despite the price, it's a super fun and addictive game, not to mention how challenging it can get. I've sunk several hours into it while playing it on the bus. It's well worth the money. There's unfortunately a bad habit of saves being deleted though.

Uncharted: GA kept me interested in it for ten minutes before I got bored. Maybe I need to try it again?

I still need to give Gravity Rush a proper go, it does sound very popular, and some have stated it's the best handheld game of the year (on any platform).
Uncharted GA, depends. Did you play the PS3 games? It's not as good as them, but it is a very good effort. If you're keen to know more of Drake's history it's well worth a go, otherwise it's hard to say. It's a good game and one of the more impressive games on the Vita but I wouldn't say it's amazing.

I've just downloaded Mortal Kombat, already played the PS3 version a fair bit but I'm keen to give it a go on the Vita and see how it plays.

I have platinumed both Uncharted and Gravity Rush.

Honestly I agree with you about Uncharted. At the start it is annoying and some of the puzzles and charcoal rubbings seem silly. But stick with it and it really is a fun, rewarding game with a good story. Just has a slightly slower, less action-packed pace than the console games. Also if intending to platinum, play it on Hard on your first playthrough as completing on Normal doesn't unlock Crushing mode.

I disagree about Gravity Rush. I thought it was a phenomenal game, the freedom to explore the open-world environment is incredible, the story and characters are very good, it looks great and you get used to the controls. The flying never gets old and once you level up a bit, you rarely run out gravity juice (TM). Yes the camera can get a bit unwieldy at times but I thought it was a small price to play for the freedom of flight. Really cannot wait for the sequel!

I really enjoyed When Mutant Blobs Attack... can't remember its exact name but it's something like that. Has fun platforming gameplay and really great progression in terms of the over-arcing story and ending. Don't think it's free on PSN+ anymore but it was.

I've played UC2 to the end (I enjoyed it thoroughly) and UC3 until I got bored (around the Syrian fortress). Honestly, I don't really think Drake is that great of a character. He's too Marty Sue ish and too perfect and artificially flawed. Maybe I'll give it a pass.

Also @B we are pretty much in agreement about GRush. I got used to the controls and I find it fun.

Also, I only played the demo of Rayman Origins on the Vita because I have the console counterpart but it is as good looking and fun so yeah. Buy it if you don't already have it. It's one of the best games I've ever played.

Oh BTW just a note of warning. I deleted Rayman Origins so I could try out Mortal Kombat. My save data went with it. I thought it would be like the PSP where the save data is separate but it isn't. So be sure to upload to online storage using content manager before you delete a game! Was almost finished the game too... very annoying!

Rayman is fantastic though and highly recommended. Just pure platforming fun with very pretty art and fantastic animation... though to be honest more story would have been nice, it's very much a classic platformer in that respect.

Oh and I've been playing Knytt Underground. Good game though not quite as good as Knytt or Knytt Stories... so far anyway. Not sure why... though I haven't unlocked the ball power yet so I'm sure I still have loads to play.

Lastly, Jetpack Joyride is a lot of fun. Lots of little challenges which this kind of game needs to keep you interested. Also uses the back touchpad as default. Should give if a shot just to experience that... it's very sensitive and I think more developers could potentially use it as L2 and R2. It wouldn't be graded like triggers on the DS3 or Xbox controller but I was surprised at how it picks up even the lightest touch. Made playing this game much more enjoyable.

Rayman Origins is very good, one of the best games I have on the VITA. Pure platforming fun and the art is stunning.
I agree on the story part, MOAR pls. But after all, the gameplay makes up for the lack of story.

Resistance: Burning Skies is not very good, I expected a lot more from it. :/
You hardly get to know the character and the game is also kinda short. Haven't tested multiplayer, yet because my Online Pass doesn't work. :kz:
And I'm not gonna buy one. Bought the game in a store so it should work. I hear there are only three maps, though.

PSASBR is nice, single player isn't very special but when you go online, it's great fun! Too bad they nerfed Sackboy, he's very hard to play with now. :C

Wipeout 2048 is a very good game too, looks and plays great. The multiplayer campaign is waaaaay too long though, and the challenges become very difficult after some time.

Does anyone here have BOPS Declassified? I wanted to buy it, but I hear it's bad, any opinions on this game?

PSASBR the multiplayer online is fun but sometimes I just wait longer than it should. Also sackboy isn't had at all to control. Atleast for me. I found that you can escape some level 3s and 2s or whatever level when you use the checkpoint and escape which works well.

Burning skies? That's what happens when insomniac gave away the series since they are done with it. The only game they have now is R&C and new upcoming game. "Fuse"

Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack is very good fun, good simple fun platforming, with a fair few puzzles thrown in and some nice comedy here and there too, well worth playing.

Resistance: Burning Skies was pretty weak, it's playable, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I think it's fair to say it was probably rushed out.

PlaystationAllstarsBR, the online is enjoybale, but unfortunately playing games online on the Vita doesn't work as well as on the PS3, the slightest thing and people tend to disconnect for one thing. When it does work it is great fun though.

Wipeout 2048 is indeed great, if you like Wipeout at all you can't go wrong with this. The campaign is huge, unfortunately I think I've accidentally lost my saved data, so I advise people to manually upload their saves for any game to online storage. Don't make the same mistake!

Sound Shapes in an enjoyable game aswell, it "rocks!"
Nice gamplay and (offcourse) stunning music. The game's graphics aren't bad either, looks very cute and cartooney.
The abilty to make your own levels and music is a great ad aswell.

PSASBR: It's fun, although the roster is still a bit small for my taste. I'm glad there's some DLC coming up for it.

Gravity Rush: So far my favorite game on the Vita, possibly my favorite handheld game. Open world is beautiful, the characters are wonderful, and the soundtrack is god-tier (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWrKHWpLn0U&list=PL4AA2CAF1947F471A). Combat is lacking a bit, but every thing else makes up for it. The story was a bit rushed, but it's still interesting and well paced until the last few missions. Also, comic panels!

Assassin's Creed: Liberation: It was fun. I liked the graphics, the gameplay, and the story was okay. Killing civilians was a fun past time between missions too. 8/10 IMO.

I also got Jet Set Radio and Final Fantasy Tactics through PS+. I haven't played JSR, although I heard it's pretty great and has an amazing soundtrack. Final Fantasy Tactics was a bit iffy. I like turn based RPGs as well as strategy, and when both are combined I usually love it. Unfortunately, FFT was sluggish and the story seemed kinda lame, which is weird for a final fantasy game before FF X.2012-12-23 23:16:00

Retro City Rampage is also free with PS+ at the moment. It's incredible dumb fun. Within ten minutes I was wearing the Destructoid hat while slashing innocent bystanders with a Zelda ish sword and shield. It's very heavy on the references which can be a bit obnoxious at times, but it's really fun overall. Check it out if you want a retro GTA that is complete anarchy. PS+ really is the best thing.

Also, Gravity Rush is amazing.

I've been playing a lot of Mortal Kombat in the last few days, there's a noticeable drop in the quality of the graphics but otherwise it's a good game. Obviously not as good as the PS3 version but it's well suited to a handheld with the quick fights and all the mini games. Plus they have added an extra tower with 150 missions just for the Vita. They're pretty good. Just don't attempt the platinum trophy, the required amount of grinding is very silly.2012-12-29 14:10:00

Grrrrr... platinum addiction... needs feeding... argh...

Planning on starting it when I get finished with Rayman Origins... or when I get a bigger memory card... stupid expensive proprietary storage media... 75 euro minimum for 32GB... just plain silly.

LBPV was pretty decent. The story was fun at first, but playing through it again it feels boring. I was quite disappointed with it, since I waited a year for it. Don't get me wrong, I loved it, but it just felt like a disappointment. Also, the loading times. Don't get me started on the loading times......2013-01-03 04:20:00

Put quite a few hours into Gravity Rush in the last few days, it's a lot of fun. The gameplay is addictive and the world and story are very engaging so far. Highly recommended from what I've seen. The art style is really nice as well. The pic' below is just concept art I believe, but I thought it reflects well on the mechanics of the game.

Gravity rush is an amazing game! Beat the story. Pretty long game for only the story missions. If you do everything else is half of the story time and even more if you buy the dlc packs. the story is about 8 hours. The side missions all together is about 4 hours and the dlc so far should be about the same as the side missions. so it would take 16 hours all together. Pretty long game for an adventure on the Vita.2013-01-21 03:19:00

Ooh, nice thread. I'm considering buying a Playstation Vita, myself, but I wish there were more games to solidify the purchase. I mean, I know that the handheld does have a number of games available despite what some people say, it's just that a lot of them seem to have gotten mixed reviews or aren't what I'm really looking for. So far, there are two games that stand out as must-buy titles: LBP Vita and Gravity Rush. There's also a bunch of downloadable content to play on the Vita's PSN shop, although I'd have to then pay extra for some expensive, proprietary memory card. (Although I guess I'd need to pay for one anyway..) I guess it'd be worth it though, since Sound Shapes and Escape Plan look pretty cool, plus being able to access psOne classics is awesome. (Although I don't think we get many options here in the states.)

There's also Tearaway and Soul Sacrifice which are yet to be released, although it's hard to predict how Soul Sacrifice will end up, and details on Tearaway have remained slim since its initial announcement back at Gamescom.

So, what other cool games are out for the system?

I reccomend you:

-Obviously Gravity Rush, LBPVita and Sound Shapes. Escape Plan I didn't really loved.
-DO NOT (personal opinion) buy AC3: Liberation or that shameful CoD game. Both just can't be compared with their supreme PS3 versions.
-Uncahrted: Golden Abyss is another great Vita exclusive. Definitely the best graphics and awesome gameplay. Not as good as Uncharted 3 but pretty awesome still.

Rayman Origins is a must-buy for the Vita. It's superior to its console counterparts (if you can live without multiplayer).

Sound Shapes is neat, if a bit insubstantial. The awesome campaign is very short, and the challenge modes after it are tedious. The create mode is really awkward because it forces you to use the rear touch for some stupid reason.

Jetpack Joyride is a waste of time. A polished and mildly fun waste of time but a waste of time nonetheless.

Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward and Persona 4 Golden both looks incredibly interesting, but I haven't gotten the chance to play them yet. How are they?

Only Vita and Media Go? This tells me everything. First I've been searching on the Vita, then PS3 and even the PC Store. I have an EU account and the games are for free only in the USA. I can't change my account on the Vita. Also I had no idea that I can download the games using Media Go. I didn't use it for ages! I guess now it's time to install that crap.

Thanks for the info!

Must have VITA games.

PS3/Vita Cross-play/buy

Sly 4. Beautiful game on vita. May not look as good on the ps3 but everything is the same as the one on the ps3. :3

Ratchet and Clank Full Frontal Assault. Great 20$ game on PS3. It may have not been out for vita yet but so far, if they delayed it the game would be having high hopes. Any R&C fan shouldn't miss this unless you are not a fan of tower defenses. If you more of a single player R&C gamer then this wouldn't be that great but at least the levels are pretty long. The game does give you free maps and dlc skins for about a dollar or 2!That and you get deadlock hd for free when the vita version releases.

Wipeout 2048. Fun racing game. Go against PS3 users on vita is a nice touch. Better than the PS3 wipeout. Party is great for this game too.

Play Station All Stars Battle Royal. Fun game. nuff said.

3rd party games

Rayman origins. Fantastic game on the vita, the game lets you collect more than the console versions and uses touch screen to zoom in! You also have time trial challenges too. Better than the console versions if you don't care about multiplayer.

Ultimate Marvel VS Capcom 3
Exactly like UMVC3 on home consoles but can use touch controls or use near to have special colors like herald or the gold version of it. Party is better in this game thanks to lobbies! You can still watch other games in lobbies or have an option to not watch it at all.

Vita only games

Uncharted Golden Abyss. Beautiful looking game on vita. Everything feels like uncharted. Give it a try if you haven't played it yet.

Gravity rush. Too many things to mention about this wonderful game.

Assassin Creed 3: Liberation. Great game. Looks amazing, gameplay is extremely good. If you were expecting multiplayer...Skip it!

Bought Virtua Tennis for really cheap. Have most of the trophies now just have to get the last online one... seems it takes ages unless ya grind with someone... God online trophies suck. It's a pretty good game though not brilliant. There are definitely better sports games though there is a surprising amount of depth with the different play-styles and working out what works well against what. My thumbs are literally growing calluses from the amount of pressure I'm putting on the buttons though! The face buttons on the PSP were nicer. How nice the games looks keeps surprising me, the animations are very good. Same as all Vita games I guess.

Really wish I had a bigger memory card, 4GB just doesn't cut it. I'm not buying a bigger card until they drop in price though!

Looking forward to MGS: HD Collection on PS+ in a few days . Hoping to get Sly soon and haven't started Wipeout yet.

So I was playing Coconut Dodge Revitalised on my Vita, and the game makes no sense whatsoever. There's all these coconuts and bits of treasure falling from the sky, yeah.. what's that all about? Anyway, you're a crab, dodge the coconuts, get the treasure. Why!? You're a crab, why do you need all that treasure? Planning to buy a bigger shell or something?

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a37/Blibble/coconutdodge_zps4105e04b.jpg (http://s8.photobucket.com/user/Blibble/media/coconutdodge_zps4105e04b.jpg.html)

And to make matters worse the crab apparently has super powers which allows it to move at incredible speeds. This is never explained, why does it have these powers? And why doesn't it use them to go somewhere safe? I don't like this crab, I think it has some sort of ulterior motive. I don't know, maybe world domination? Or something even more sinister.

I'll be trying Rayman Origins later, I'm sure that will make much more sense.

Not mentioning LBP Vita, sooo
Gravity Rush: Fun game, love the design of the characters and the artstyle and unique playstyle. I think the lock-on is pretty wonky, though, which leads me to the final boss. The final boss can out of nowhere and acts as if it has ADHD, which will be hell since the lock-on was wonky. Other than that, the only other problem I have with it is that the story, while it's great, it has many plot holes and it's a bit inconsistent. Other than that, the game is amazing. The visuals are beautiful, soundtrack's awesome, all of the other bosses were fun (especially Yunica), and this concept is the most original thing I've seen on a recent game. Hope the plot and controls get more fleshed out in the sequel.

Uncharted Golden Abyss:Certainly not as good as the main trilogy, but still a fairly decent game. It uses the Vita's screen nicely. Does get really unfair at points (I HATE the part where you have to protect Chess while she's climbing the ladder, **** snipers...). I don't like it's "unnatural phenomenon", I mean, really? Overall, pretty decent game.

Games I really dislike on the Vita:
-Modnation Racers: On the Road: Downgrade from PSP version. Adds literally nothing new, all unlockables are the same. And worse, there's no online racing
-Touch My Katamari: Nothing but stages took directly from previous Katamaris. Makes sense in Forever, but not here. The story is just a rehash from We <3 Katamari

Persona 4 is the highest rated Vita game right now and for a reason. Its one of the best RPG's ever made, and this one made tons of improvement on the original. I picked this one up last week and have to restrain myself form playing. I cant remember an RPG where you are so attached to the characters. Tons of customization and replay value.

Buy it, NOW

I'm addicted to this free game. Mostly for the friend dungeon. The only flaw in the friend making game is that you can't get to 100 if you already have friends before playing this game.
