[ranty] Bloody Mayans!

Archive: 6 posts

Sigh....

i am right on the cusp of finishing my stage up. It's been five months on and off of building and testing and trying out new (for me) things. 10classrooms of kanji fun with teachers in each. Connecting hallways with possible student appearances. a functioning teleport system. It's been a lot of work for something of negligible utility, but i've (mostly) had fun with it, and even if i couldn't get in everything i wanted to, i still feel pretty proud of it.

Oh sure, it froze once or twice in these five months, and the emitters have ever been tweaky...but other than my own mistakes everything'd been cruisy.

Until last night. Like i said, everything's pretty well finished except for a little bit of decorating and finishing up the tentacles that hold the hallways up (well, look like they do, it's all Anti-grav, natch). So, i'm all like, finally, one more rush and i can put this puppy to bed.

And it starts freezing. Like...constantly. i could hardly get anything done before it'd freeze up again. Went back to a previous back-up, reworked things...and it does it again. Get in and save the bedrock elements of the stage, put them back together in an empty spot on my moon...that's cut it down some. But even after that i've had one...two freeze ups (utter freezes, mind, where the whole system locks up and had to be hard shut down).

If it keeps up...saaa...i guess there's nothing to be done for it but break down and do a completely fresh rebuild. i REALLY don't want to do that, but...

Man...i really want to get this done and done with before Christmas...but i'm worried i'll be lucky to be done with it 'fore LBPK comes out over here on the 17th of Jan.

Errrg...it's just so frustrating. i've been holding off on actually playing stages (or any other of the currently backlisted games i've got) just to be done with this. As proud as i might be for putting all this together, i'd be lying if i said i won't be happy to see the backside of this stage.

Did this freezing mainly start to occur right after you downloaded the newest patch?2012-12-22 19:36:00

Actually, yes, yes it did, come to think of it.

Previously, i could have counted on one hand the number of times the game'd locked up on me, but after the patch...

Since the really absurd number of crashes late Thursday night/early Friday morning (which was why i was blaming the Mayans in jest...though thought it was more likely something i'd done), it's only frozen twice...i thought it was because i went to an older backed up save. If it is patch related that is both more and less of a release. More, because it's no because of something i'm doing, less 'cause who knows how long it'll be an issue.

Thanks a lot for the question FPM!

Have you thought of capturing the whole level, or portions of the level, as an object, then putting it in a new level? Sometimes it's something in the level itself and not the actual objects.2012-12-23 07:14:00

That's just what i did, and it did seem to relieve the issue a bit. Each 'floor' is essentially the teleport booth, with halls leading off on each side, which emit a classroom at the end (via a player sensor). When things got really wonky, i just captured each one and put them all into a new level. Since i did that, as i said, it's only frozen once (or maybe twice), so there's still something going on.

i'm a bit leery of making it as complex as it had been, which may be a good thing in the end, 'cause less stress on the thermo. Once i get it published, if it seems to be okay, i might re-introduce some of the removed bits a little at a time.
