Starwars - The Battle Of Hoth (PICS)

Archive: 19 posts

Well I've been tempted over here to LBP Central by a friend from the 1up boards, I see a few other friends have made it over as well, great to see a few familiar names! I was told I should come showcase some of my stuff, in particular my best work to date "Starwars - The Battle Of Hoth"

Without ever gracing the "Cool levels", "Community Pages" or any other gaming boards other than 1up.com... I'm still humbled that my level Starwars - The Battle Of Hoth has already had just under 1000 plays and has been hearted by over 160 people.

By showcasing within LBP Central I hope to give more people the opportunity to play this detailed filled creation and share a few items I've worked long and hard on along the way.

This level features two ways to play, the first as a Rebel Pilot flying a Snowspeeder aiding Rebel Soldiers on the ground against AT-ST's and battling TIE Fighters.

The second way to play is as a Rebel Soldier, where you'll use cannons, the paintball gun *recently added* and take control of your very own AT-ST to battle the empire on foot.

This level took close to one month, of 5 hr a day sessions to create, everything including the Snowspeeders, Y-Wing's, TIE Fighters, AT-ST's and the AT-AT's are replicated from pictures and all the "blueprints" I could find on the net.

Most everything is unlockable, from the custom made vehicles to the large cast of characters made using the Playstation Eyetoy.

As a bonus at the end of Starwars - The Battle Of Hoth, you'll receive a level key to my mini-level, "Deathstar Lightsaber Duel" as you and a friend can fight to the death on board one of the decks of the Deathstar!

Feedback is always welcome!!

Welcome, man... yeah, I liked this level right away. I'm a star wars fan (who isn't?) and what really got me was the detail on everything and the vehicles - along with all the custom eyetoy work you did. It was the first time I'd seen any good eyetoy use. The separate paths is always nice too. I'm glad to hear you went in and added some paintball action to this too. I played a few Star Wars levels early on in LBP and hated all of them, but this one did the saga justice and more.2009-01-19 00:08:00

Thats the exact same conclusion I had after playing a few different Starwars levels, I felt unimpressed... maybe abit of a let down, with most of them being black backgrounds with stars. So I set out to make the most detailed interactive Starwars level I possibly could... here are a few other interesting facts about the creation process and timelines involved for this level.

Interesting fact 1: It took approx 5 hrs to build the AT-AT to scale.

Interesting fact 2: It took approx 4 hrs to build the AT-ST to scale and ultimately it went through several reversions, in order for the mechanics to work as it walked through the level.

Interesting fact 3: The Snowspeeder was the toughest to build because of the shape of the craft and missing angles from LBP it would have taken to fully copy, overall by the time it was done, it took approx 5hrs to build.

Interesting fact 4: All the characters were photographed using the PS3 Eyetoy from the screen of my laptop, then stickered onto a desired material to create the various characters you'll meet.

Interesting fact 5: My "homemade rebel soldier costume" seen in the screenshots above consists of "white cotton",for Sackboys skin the "crash helmet", the "ringmaster moustache", the "ring master trousers" and the "PVC raincoat" (if you have other Starwars costumes, please post here)

Interesting fact 6: The Y-Wing seemed to be the easiest to build and was completed in an hour and a half.

Interesting fact 7: The TIE Fighter was complicated because of the sticker details, which took close to an hour on its own.

Interesting fact 8: The controllable AT-ST was not originally planned and was added at the near the levels completion, personally I think it turned out to be one of the levels best qualities, if you like blowing stormtroopers sky high, watching them flip through the air!

Interesting fact 9: For best results when firing from the Snowspeeder or the AT-ST, wait til you can target the middle of a big cluster of stormtroopers, instead of just flipping the switch on for continuous fire.

Interesting fact 10: I thought about building the Millenium Falcon and parking it in the Echo Base, but it would of eaten up too much room, cause my level was "overheating" as is.

Search me as a creator "CloudStrife_ca" or "1up" Honorable mentions go to my previous classic levels, Pirates Vs. Ninjas ACT I & ACT II, as well as Moving Day, between these previous levels they have over 2200 plays now ... thank you to everyone on these boards for checking my levels!

My God, the screenshots look amazing! Thanks for this - as soon as my lady gets off Oblivion, I'm going to check this out first thing.

Of course, that might not be for a long... long time. Having a gamer girlfriend is awesome, but you still got to pay the price!

Hahaha! my girl isn't much of a Starwars fan, although she did watch all 6 episodes with me and shes probably more of a casual gamer playing such titles as Wii Fit, Cooking Mama, Brain Age, Yoshi's Cookie and the New Super Mario Bros, but she absolutely hated the lengthy sessions it took me to build this, although I tried to keep it to when she was out... chics and Starwars, usually not good bed fellows... not even in LBP form.

Yeah, my lady was none too happy with me staying up overnight to work on my levels. I tend to really... REALLY lose track of time once I start up create mode. So it's gotten to where she kind of dreads it when I turn it on.

But she loves seeing the finished products. But yeah, once I get knee deep into a level, she's pretty miserable, as I've essentially beamed out for a couple of days.

Oh wow, I just noticed that you live in Surrey. I'll be ****ed, I'm in Vancouver.

I just played this one.
It was very good.
Your custom content is great! I am obsessed about custom content in my own levels so i liked to find people that are the same
I loved a lot the AT-AT design. At-ST is very good too.
Music and sounds effects were good.

Suggests:
-The sections with snow are not the same great look that the rest of the level. It was shocking here.
-The section with the AT-ST in wich you can jump is far to long. I was wondering "when this will be the end?"? Don't get me wrong, this section is interesting and very well done, but just too long for me.
- I think you can do AMAZING things with your AT-AT and AT-ST using small high radiant colored spotlights (in shadow position). In a general manner, you can increase impact of the main action scene by using more lighting effects.

Overall great level! 5 stars and hearted

If you have a little bit time, please take a look to my The Bearer levels... They also are referentials levels, but on The Lord of the Rings

Thank you first off for playing my level, but also for the detailed feedback thats awesome!!

The snow parts fortunately were the easiest part of the level, but that design or a similar one was required to place all the foot steps of the approaching walkers, I may go back and clean them up at some point although I'm in the middle of another project right now.

I agree with you when you mention the AT-ST controlled part may be abit long, would you think speeding up the walker would help?

As for my lighting it sounds like I could actually be learning from you, overall I kept it simple and wanted to keep it as close to the film as possible, so crisp blue skies.

I will certainly try your levels when I get a chance and leave some feedback as well, thanks again!

I remember playing this earlier last month. I'm probably not as big a Star Wars fan as everyone else here... nevertheless, I really enjoyed this level. I especially loved your LBP renditions of the Star Wars vehicles (the AT-AT and AT-ST are AMAZING), characters, and sets. There's a lot of eye candy here, and just like the movies, it works very well. Hmm... gotta find this level again and play it. 2009-02-04 19:39:00

I love seeing detailed stuff like this. When it's apparent someone invested a lot of time in their level it sometimes doesn't even have to work that well to be fun. I could't get one of the walkers to shoot. Friend of mine might have been a bit ****** off but I didn't care. I couldn't get luke to blow up the AT-AT either. I still like it a lot.2009-02-05 10:29:00

*UPDATE*

I just wanted to send out abit of an update, since the release of the Metal Gear Solid Creator Pack I've republished "Starwars - The Battle Of Hoth" recently, adding in the paintball gun and the ability to take down the AT-ST (2-legged walker) as I've had several requests to include the large vehicles as destructible vehicles. I hope to republish again soon with an update to make the AT-AT (4 legged walker) destructible as well.

I've also republished my mini level "Deathstar - Light Saber Duel" with additional background detail (Rebel Soldiers/ Storm Troopers/ Chewbacca/C3P0/R2D2 in the middle of a blaster rifle battle) I've also built in a scoreboard to end the mini level properly.

On a completely different note, my new project "Saving Private Ryan" should be on track for a late February release.

Here are a few teaser pics from early in the build of the beach scene from the beginning of the movie. My new level "Saving Private Ryan" follows bits & pieces from the film, some of my own ad-libs and will feature several real WWII Tanks, The Carrier Boat, an Army Jeep and a Kettlekrad (also known as the "Rabbit" from the movie.) I will publish a brand new full post, once I've completed my 6th project... comments and questions are always welcome, I look forward to your feedback.

i'll definitely have a go at the star wars one next time i'm on. looks fantastic.

have a go at the star wars level (it has a long name that i've forgotten) by 'julesyjules'. it's a completely different tone to yours but if you're a fan of the films you'll like it.

*UPDATE*

Both the AT-ST and the AT-AT are now destructible! I've added more score bubbles when you're battling the AT-AT and I hope to do another minor update soon, thanks for playing... may the force be with you!
