Creators block! :(

Archive: 9 posts

Hey everyone.

Im new here but have been on MNR and LBPK. I made 4 tracks in LBPK and now since I am learning more....I kinda got some kind of creators block? I can not describe it other than I think it became overwhelming.

My first track was visually neat but not much moving props.

Second got a little more creative with lighting & moving props.

3rd was a homage track with a bit more prop usage & 4th a tiny bit more.

I then started messing around with lap triggered gates which turned into a nightmare until I sorted it out. (I found out that if you set sensor to above 1 lap you must actually test race & not test drive...ugh)

Anyway...I started a new track & just got stuck. I did this 4 times now. I dont know what is up I think I am trying to think too far ahead and just get lost!

Any tips you vets can give me for some serious track making? I watched all the tutorial vids & they are great but what I mean is gates, moving objects, detailed large scenery, changing lighting etc.

Thanks...I have wasted countless hours & need some guidance. I am even at a loss for a theme too after starting 4 track!

I'm no vet but when i'm at a loss of what my next creation will be I spend countless hours at area 51 (my testing grounds). Currently I have no idea myself what I'll do next so now I'm messing around with creating karts and weapons, eventually i'll design something that with plant the seed I need for my next track. I know not much advice but every little bit helps.2012-12-21 00:16:00

Funny you say that...I have a track test area I call test track that I kinda do the same thing. It looks like a tornado hit!

It's always good to experiment with different types of tracks/arenas/levels. From a creative point of view you'll go mad, and quickly, by doing the same thing over and over.

So you can try moving to something other then just a race. It CAN get stressful though, learning new ways to use the tools. But the end all is worth it in my opinion.

Personally I went from a fairly standard, pretty clunky race (which I'm either going to update or trash), to messing around with weapons, point bubbles and certain functions. To a pseudo-arcade style race, to first-person survival horror. Next I'm thinking of trying out 3D platforming.

It keeps my interests up. But don't feel bad for taking breaks, everyone needs 'em.

Oh, have you played Quantum Conundrum? By the looks of it we need to develop something along those lines here. It might be hard, but it's an idea.

Thanks for the reply. Makes very much sense! Never played Quantum Conundrum or heard of it for that matter? (Hitting google after writing this) I just played your level last night & reviewed it. First I thought it was amazing! You took a kart game and changed it into a FPS! It was creepy with great atmosphere. The controls were wonky but that s no fault of yours. Most impressive idea I have seen yet!2012-12-21 17:46:00

Oh, thanks for playing that. I intentionally left the controls clunky. That's important for any survival horror style game. I thought of adding cross hairs and strafing, but that would just be silly.

The only thing I dislike is the inversion when backing up... I have no idea how to stop that.

@anarchowolf: There might be one way to stop the inversion thing, but you'll need a controlinator and kartinator. Maybe if you had a directional splitter and directional combiner, then wire + to - and vice versa, so that left means right and right means left, and make that only activate while going in reverse. Hope that makes sense.

As for creator's block, I usually try and have some crazy concept, and build a level around that. Don't just limit yourself to tracks and such. Right now I'm making a plane with the jets and such.
