Nah, Mario didn't really have physics, all of it was simulated. a Physics game is where the stuff happens in real time. So, you push a box, and it would drag and feel the way it should. You have a tower of bricks, it would crumble. Mario was all simulated, because you'd get to push a block, or hit a block, and it would all be programed to do so. It's much much more complex than what Mario's "physics" were. It's not to a point where everything happens independent of programming (although they can now do that; see Backbreaker and Star Wars: Unleashed) but it's more than simulation.
