By "update to new version", did you mean a patch?

Do you have any backups of your profile or level data?

Then that's that, I'm afraid.
If there's no trace of your data on your system, and you have no back-up, it's permanently lost.

However, it seems more likely that your data just isn't loading, rather than your data having actually been deleted.
I think a more likely explaination is that the most recent patch has changed something to do with the way the game handles save data, and due to some oversight, some profiles aren't loading.

Don't panic - wait for word from the Devs first. If I'm correct, your data will work again after a future patch.

EDIT-
This might be an exercise in futility, but try explaining what has happened to you on Getsatisfaction (https://getsatisfaction.com/littlebigplanet).
This is supposed to be the official bug-reporting site.

Sorry to hear about this! It happens way, way too often. Updates for LBP1 and LBP2 are tremendously unstable. I have had to learn the lesson twice, losing my entire PS3 to LBP2 updates. The problem is, of course, that we usually don't know there's an update until we are already in the game and online, and the game borks itself with that message about updating to a new version, with no choice but to pull the plug from the wall once it starts. And that could also wipe your hard drive.

Welcome to the club! It's a rite of passage for creators to have everything we love destroyed by some finnicky glitch or another, at least once.

I am truly sorry.

The good news is whatever's published on your moon should be fine.

Just want to mention (for anyone reading this thread looking for solutions to current/future problems) that you should NEVER just pull the plug on your machine, if an incident does occur updates often have the 'press O to cancel' option or the ps3 has safe shutdown procedures you can follow (found in hardware manual). Pulling the plug will definately have a negative effect on your system that is often fatal.

When i was having freeze issues before (which i'm wondering if they may be recent patch related now) i found that while the controller was locked up, i could still turn the system off by holding the power button (not the switch) on my tower down for a few seconds. It should beep a few times and then close itself out. When you restart the system, it'll tell you that it needs to check for corrupted data, but nothing came up any of the times i needed to do it.

i'm not sure if i got that out of the instruction manual or from here, but it seems like a much safer alternative to pulling the plug.
