Corrupt File/Saving Bug Details

Archive: 15 posts

I know this subject is on other threads, but I got some REALLY good objective information on the save bug tonight and I wanted to put all the details down visibly. I'm a software developer so I figured my observations might be pertinent. I thought it might help MM to find the issue if they haven't already:

Tonight when I was finished working on Splat Invaders Saga I exited the game (did NOT turn off my PS3). "Beep" sounds occurred and the PS3 rebooted. Almost immediately I thought "something strange just happened." Went back into LBP and back into my level and found it had reverted back to the previous day's work.

Now, don't anyone feel sorry for me. I'm one of the fortunate few that had just published. My published level had ALL my changes and worked perfectly, but it did give me some insight on the issue:

1. Since the level reverted back to before I had done any work, this means that the last time I saved it did not write out at all (or MM has some way of detecting corrupted data and reverted back - only they could tell that). But it THOUGHT it was writing out. Since the game was still functioning after saving, this tells me that the thread used to perform the save was locked up. This would also explain why the PS3 rebooted when exiting - it sounds like the PS3 was unable to stop all processes related to LBP and therefore had to reboot.

2. I do NOT have a full profile. I have been regularly deleting collected objects and I had just removed several levels I was not using anymore earlier in the day.

3. Based on this situation, it does tell me that publishing a level for safe-keeping is a good thing. I wondered before whether if published the level would be corrupted in both places, but apparently that is not necessarily true. So, even if you are working on material not ready for others, ** publish a locked level regularly **

Edit: This morning when I turned on my PS3 I could get into my POD, but it would not let me in the game, so I'm assuming my LBP save files were corrupt. (restored from a backup I made on a memory stick and re-downloaded my published levels, so all's good)

Something similar happened to me. My PS3 froze after it was left on for too long and I lost the data that I had gotten while it was on. I didn't lose any other data than that, thankfully.2009-01-19 06:12:00

There's multiple bugs involving loss of progress.

-Sometimes it won't save even if there's the little icon. The game will not reboot if you quit and your save file will not be corrupted. This on is probably happening with big profiles and levels. This bug happens alot more since 1.07

-Sometimes the save will corrupt your save file. I'm not sure this one is related to big profiles. Also, it happened alot around launch and became rarer with 1.03

Those are the 2 from the top of my head and that I read about everywhere. This absolutely needs to be fixed.

I guess I've been lucky because none of this has happened to me yet. When I was playing LBP yesterday though my console froze when I was making a very long mirror's edge level with a theme tune as well. I hadn't saved it for a long time but when I came back it was in exactly the same place as when it froze.2009-01-19 16:34:00

You are one extremely lucky guy because the game certainly doesn't save when it freezes! 2009-01-19 18:06:00

I've taken all my objects from my popit that I made myself and uploaded them on two locked levels which acts as safes. Then I clear out my popit whenever I'm making a new level.2009-01-19 19:13:00

You might want to take a look at this (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=7697) when you get a chance.2009-01-19 19:16:00

Thanks for the info! I actually had made a backup of the corrupted files to a memory stick before restoring my backup, so I went ahead and sent it to MM.

That's fantastic. I hope you sent them the detailed story you put at the top too. I think the more pertinent info they get, the better the upcoming patch is going to be

I didn't send them all that information, however I DID tell them I had more details and if they needed any more info they could email me back. I'm used to documenting and storing EVERYTHING, so I hope I can be of help.

Good stuff! I'm getting this good feeling that that patch is coming soon... Don't quote me on that

I had the same experience. My game went to the very beginning like it was the first time I ever put in the disk. To where you see the opening credits and learn how to jump and get around etc. I couldnt even get online. I went looking through saved game data and found a folder that was marked "corrupted data" I had a save that I copied back and rebooted into a working lbp again, but lost some stuff. Thankfully I could copy it from where its published. I agree, publish a level regularly if you make changes and lock it up until its ready to be played by the public. I guess I should send the folder with corrupted data in to Sam.

If it happens that often, you would probably be a great pick for them to put a little debug build on your PS3 to help them figure out what is happening. Many times these issues are so sporatic it is difficult to track.
