Screen burn in warning!!

Archive: 10 posts

hi. i am the creator of a few lbp vita levels and have spent a lot of time using the editor. i have noticed now that the icons from the screen of tbe editor are burned into myscreen. to see if your vita has been damaged goto the pure blue background of the ps store load page and look in the corners of your screen. if you have a shadow of the pause icon in the right corner than your screen is damaged. im sending mine in to try and get it replaced but we also need to bring this to media molecoles attention. they need to release a patch so that there are no bright white icons on the screen at all times because the new vita oled screen is apparently very susseptable to burn in. in the mean time turn your screen brightness down and only spend an hour or less in the editor at a time.2012-12-14 02:57:00

thanks for the warning, this seems like it could be quite a serious issue.
do you think it occurred because you spent a few very long sessions in create or because of sheer time altogether?
im just wondering if maybe the issue could be prevented by spending more editing time in short bursts rather than a few hour + create sessions.

it was almost definatly one long play session, if you imagine the screen as being covered in a dust of tiny crystals, they should all be perfectly clear, what happened was that the bright white icons made that part of the screen so hot that it turned them from clear to toasty brown, i would definatly limit time in the editor to under an hour and turn down your screen brightness to half while in the editor, if eenough people complain im hopeing they release a patch to remove the icons from the screen during edit mode.2012-12-14 17:48:00

This is indeed a serious issue! Posting on getsatisfaction.com is generally the best way to inform the developers of problems in the LBP games

Bonus info: The blue diodes have been the greatest weakness of OLED technology ever since its early days, and this is most likely the reason you might still observe a slight burn-in on a blue background...

Hmmm thats not great to read.

Its not a new problem, or a hard one to work around. I mean many of us have a DVR, which if you leave the menu on and no input is received it goes back to the TV after a few mins. Or if you mute your TV, the mute icon moves around.

Never been a big fan of handhelds, but thanks to loving LBP so much, the recent cross controller dlc is likely going to sway me into buying a 200+ quid peripheral (vita) to enjoy another aspect of LBP. Which Im sure ill have a go at LBPV as a result, so if I spend a ton of time in create I can expect a damaged screen... lovely.

I don't think the problem is quite so bad as all that. I spent a good bit of time creating my only Vita level and my screen survived the process. Here's a link to a thread I started on this very subject a while back. There's some good input from comphermc in there...

It's not a problem if you leave the Vita un-attended, by default the screen first dims then shuts off after like 1 minute...it's only an issue if you stay in create without switching to play mode for a long period (hours?). As a general rule I exit the level every 30 minutes or so to avoid losing progress anyway. I would still like to see this issue addressed better so that I don't even need to be cognizant of it...the option to hide the HUD doesn't cut it since it only removes the thermo.

i had that problem with my new tv. unfortunately there is not fix to this, or the fix is more expensive than buy a new ps vita , this looks really serious, the most of the tvs recommend not spend more than 30 minutes with the same image.2012-12-20 22:23:00

If you turn off the HUD in the settings (hides thermo)...then the only static icon you have to worry about is the preview mode toggle. If you return to your pod or go to play mode every 30 minutes or so you should be fine. I don't think there is much risk of burn in when you are actively creating...just don't disable the Vita's sleep timer. The pause icon disappears when you open the popit and all other screen widgets are context based. I keep my brightness pretty low as well out of personal preference...that probably helps too...2013-01-06 22:08:00
