How do you celebrate Christmas?

Archive: 24 posts

You see, this is a thread to share what you do in Christmas. I'd like to know if there is a special tradition in your particular country, if you don't celebrate Christmas then maybe what you do instead, or anything you feel wanting to share.

For example, I celebrate Christmas in the 24th evening and the very early morning of the 25th, -I think you guys in the US celebrate in the actual 25th, right?-. Here in Mexico, we do use to put a shiny Christmas tree with a nativity scene beneath it. I myself go to two different houses in Christmas' Eve -one for my mother's family and another one for my father's- and we celebrate all night -approx. from the 24th's 8:00p.m. to the 25th's 5a.m.-. All my family gets reunited and we spend a wonderful time together.

After that, in January 6th, we celebrate -and many other spanish speaking cultures like Spain, etc. do as well- the "Three Wise Men day" or "The three Wizard's king day", which is a wonderful celebration for children, as these three wise men act as another Santa Claus, so they also receive presents in January 6th

I really want to know about your traditions as well! So, how do you celebrate guys?

Hehe, that's a pretty cool thread I hadn't noticed! Maybe I should have resurrected that one. Anyway. I loved your daughter's snowman!!! XD

@ nys- wish we could get that much snow. Last year my daughter was able to make a 6" and a 3" snowman.
Kinda sad looking snowmen but she liked it.

@ bio- LOL, I don't think the HMO would allow us to add that unique decoration.

Thanks!
That is our real life Texas snowman.
Maybe this year (since it's suppose to go below freezing tonight) we could get some snow. If we do I'll post an updated pic.

Hehe, I've only been twice to places which have enough snow to make a snowman, and I TOTALLY failed at doing one. They look oh so much easier to do in the films 2012-12-11 02:44:00

I celebrate with a bowl of Cheese Supreme Doritos by my side, my PS3 whirring, and tears flowing freely down my face.

KIDDING!

Although this time I won't be doing much.

I used to go do stuff with the rest of the family before I moved. Now I just pass the time freezing in the half-foot deep snow and running from my brothers trying to throw snowballs at me all the way down the street. Haven't gone two days without being chased a block.2012-12-11 16:59:00

I'm going to celebrate at my new beach apartment with some of my family, however, this Christmas is going to be the simplest of all for me.

We celebrate it on the 24th here in Sweden.

When I wake up on the 24th I eat breakfast, shower, put on my nicest clothes and I then prepare myself for spending a whole day with my family. My cousins, aunt, uncle, grandma etc. comes over and we all watch cartoons at 3pm (tradition in Sweden), Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse and all those disney classics. After that we eat dinner, meatballs, sausages, ham and gravlax (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravlax) is a must. No beverage is served but mulledwine and Julmust. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julmust)

After dinner we get ready to open our presents. We usually write long rhymes for our presents which we read before opening them. After all presents are opened we sit for some hours and talk and have a good time, then everyone goes home and goes to sleep.

I'll be going to Guatemala to celebrate with some family down there.

...Although the only tradition in Guatemala that's any different from America is that everyone stays up 'til midnight and sets off a butt-ton of fireworks. xD

So, yeah, Christmas dinner + opening presents on the 25th + fireworks = Guatemalan Christmas.

All the snowmelted away before christmas arrived. ;-;
BETTER COME BACK BEFORE IT'S THE 25th. :kz:
Here in Belgium, we're often just at home with family eating gourmet or fondue. We also have "Three Kings" or however the fudge it should be called in english. The kids dress up as kings (With a paper crown, a staff and a blanket. xD) and go from door to door, singing a song, then ye shall recieve coins. We also do it every year at the youth club. We're actually too old for it but to heck with that! Singing at people's front door FTW!
And the firework ofcourse! I don't think we'll set of fireworks this year though, last year one stopped flying, dropped on our roof and exploded. And now my parents will forever say that it is too dangerous. >~>

It's never really snows over here since I live in the South. So I plan to get up, have breakfast, open all my "clothes" I have gotten, then watch T.V. 2012-12-18 23:25:00

Christmas Eve: Chinese restaurant with some of my extended family.

Christmas: Once everyone is awake, we open stockings, then presents. We have early dinner with the same extended family.

New Years' Eve: (a little off topic, but whatever) go to a church family's house, snacks in kitchen, card games (and adults) upstairs, video games (and kids) in the basement; at 11:50 PM, everyone goes downstairs to watch the Chicago New Year celebration. (No, we don't live there, but we live in that time zone.)

I am stay in UK so I am haveing a different Christmas celebration style.

In Japan there is no special day for Christmas where turkey is eat because not many is believe in Christ and is Christian.
instead Christmas is used as a time to be happy and spread happiness.
There is a god of good fortune Hoteiosho watching every child with eyes in back of his head and if good you receive gifts! In the West there is Santa instead
But the children scared of him are get gifts from Santa!

so before come to UK Christmas was known as romantic fun day and spend time having happy time and receiving gifts. But it not a holiday in Japan and therefore school and work is still open.

I am enjoying the Christmas in UK and I already seen Santa and got a early gift from him
I am excited to spend Christmas day as it is in the west!

Christmas Eve will be spent eating copious amounts of shwarmas, pork and shrimp siu mai, and I forget what else because there's too much to keep track of. It's a culinary clusterfark. I'm pretty sure all of my relatives will end up buying something ridiculously unnecessary again.

Christmas day is more standard. Wake up, open gifts then go over to cousins for breakfast. Later we have a nice turkey meal.

We wait up for Santa in my house. "Why so Xmas?"

Then we ask him to help with the roast potatoes, thus the potato peeler in the picture above. He never appreciates us asking that, not sure why.
