Skill Run [SR] Series : Tropical Branch
Archive: 14 posts
Hello again everyone While I am busy creating my next race track I decided to take a break and make some quick Skill Run tracks. I am an adamant lover of the Super Monkey Ball series, however I have been completely bummed as of late since they have decided the game should only be played with tilt control (which I despise). So I decided to build some quick tracks that play along the same line of Super Monkey Ball. They are set up as time attacks so do whatever you can to get to the finish bubble with the fastest time! Tropical Branch 1-1: Tropical Turn Creator Time: 0:21.855 https://lbpk-production.s3.amazonaws.com/player_creations/130981/data.jpg I wanted to keep the first stage as a sort of tutorial level, as I tend to find those are the shortest and easiest, yet usually the most competitive when it comes to time attacks. https://lbpk-production.s3.amazonaws.com/player_creations/130979/data.jpg Its all about finding the biggest best shortcut and executing it perfectly! 1-2: Tropical Twists Creator Time: 0:49.950 https://lbpk-production.s3.amazonaws.com/player_creations/130975/data.jpg Continuing on I realize the difficulty must steadily rise and this track I feel is fairly difficult when compared to the first stage. https://lbpk-production.s3.amazonaws.com/player_creations/130977/data.jpg This stage will certainly remind you that you have a break button! But keep steady and you'll have it down no problem. 1-3: Tropical Tilt Creator Time: 1:03.096 https://lbpk-production.s3.amazonaws.com/player_creations/130973/data.jpg Again slightly more difficult than the previous one, this one will have you keeping control on some steep slopes. https://lbpk-production.s3.amazonaws.com/player_creations/130971/data.jpg Make sure you don't slide off! There are plenty of time saving shortcuts in all of the tracks, and since they are in the arena setting, there are no "Wrong Way" or "Out of Bounds" resets. Just use whatever you can, even if you think its cheating or level breaking, cause thats the name of the game! Can you beat my Creator Times? I didn't use any shortcuts, so victory is within your reach! When you die, currently you will restart at the beginning of the track, so do your best to stay out of the water. I feel these levels aren't long enough to warrant any checkpoints yet, but in future branches I will for sure add checkpoints when stages get longer. Thanks for reading, and I hope you'll check them out! Tropical Branch will probably end at 1-5, then I'll switch to a different theme. If you have any suggestions let me know! Brilliant idea and well executed. I completed one and three but got stuck on 2. Visually they look great and definately have that monkey ball feel. I disagree about the checkpoint thing I'm afraid, these levels are TOUGH and I think you need a midpoint checkpoint in both 2 and 3. The gameplay - especially in track three is really good - I really enjoyed the sloped section...and the weird half pipe bit and the jumps on the rotating circles was really tense - in a good way! Suggestions: Add checkpoints! You could put a reset sensor in the logic and add 10 seconds every time someone falls off? Not sure if that would work on the end scoreboard though. Have you tried the alternate control styles? The one where you can rotate directly left and right would suit monkey ball better I think Questions: Ok I give up.. I've been trying on and off throughout the day - how on earth did you do the opening camera shot? I need... no demand a full and frank explanation! These are definately going in Karting Korner. Really good idea. | 2012-12-09 21:33:00 Author: TheAdipose Posts: 533 |
Okok you win, i'll add checkpoints in 2 and 3 xD They are pretty tough, I think I just fell into that idealism that it wasn't too hard since I had test run them each like 20 times I'll look into a reset sensor, I haven't used that at all yet so it would be fun to see what it can do! When I was doing proof of concept I did try the tank controls but I dont think I tested it enough and figured if I kept it normal controls it might help people control better when in normal racing. I'll look into it again though for future stages! As for the opening camera all I did was essentially put 3 movie cameras next to each other, linked them together and set it to soft pan-3 second hold-2 second transition. Then I just set the camera angles of each and they soft pan between them after each one is 'finished' Thanks for giving them a shot! I'll update them with checkpoints asap | 2012-12-09 22:25:00 Author: Mooshywooshy Posts: 28 |
I've played them all and 1-2 is more hard than 1-3 but that is just my personal opinion. | 2012-12-09 22:27:00 Author: Unknown User |
I agree! (Dont tell anyone) I suppose length =/= difficulty >< | 2012-12-09 22:33:00 Author: Mooshywooshy Posts: 28 |

Thanks for playing everyone I finally have a day off work so after I get a few things done I'll do my best to make a couple more! Also big thanks to The Adipose for featuring my levels in his wonderful Karting Korner show Have a watch, I added it to the O.P.! Thanks again everyone! Oh and in honor of TheAdipose i'll let you know of a giant shortcut in 1-3. In the video you'll see him drive towards a "No Swimming" sign, if you launch yourself off the edge at a 45 degree angle to the left of that sign and hold full stop on brakes you can land in the halfpipe for a huge time cut! | 2012-12-12 02:41:00 Author: Mooshywooshy Posts: 28 |
