The Tower to Heaven

Archive: 13 posts

Hi,

this is my newest Level, its an vertical Platformer, where u help "Pogo" to climb the Tower to Heaven, to be reunited with this friends. The Tower seems to have an 3D like movement, its inspired by "Tower Toppler" aka "Nebulus" but has different Gameplay, i mainly took the idea and off course the sprites, which u can see.

I had this Idea running in my head for sometime but i finally tried to execute it, after someone else opened a Thread asking about how to realize this. You can see how it started here:

https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=75946-Vertical-Roation-on-Objects

Some Screens:

You controll an animated pixelated Character, can choose between Easy and Hard Difficulty, if u play hard, you get more points and as a gift u get "pogo", with labeled outputs so u can easily adjust it and put your own Graphics on it.

Heres a Screen:

Its gameover if u fall into the water.

Its my first bigger project, i started out creating Levels with LBPV, so i learned a whole lot with this Level. Also, it started as an experimental sideproject, i got stuck on it and put alot of energy into it actually. I had like one million bugs, because the mechanics are quite something lol, so im well aware of eventually flaws, bugs in the gameplay, some of which i just cant seem to get fixed, if u have any idea or suggestions how to fix things u find, u are welcome to give me your feedback here. I really did execute it as good as possible.

I hope u enjoy the Level, as much as i enjoyed making it.

And let me here what u think.

Here it is:

Sweet looks like a cool concept, im loading it up now

EDIT - My feedback:
A very enjoyable little minigame!
I thought the cute characters really fit in well with the look of the level, despite being pixel art imposed onto a background of 3d materials.
The handling of Pogo was a little bit tricky, i think there was maybe a little too much momentum which caused him to slide about a little bit, but i soon got used to this and could compensate. I was surprised at the speed that the water started to rise at, especially since it seemed to be the same speed as the mechanical lifts were, i would have liked them to be a little bit faster to give the player more of a chance against the water (although i was playing on hard mode). You achieved the rotating tower effect quite nicely aswell, so kudos for that, i know that was a little tricky to work out.

i gave you a and am looking forward to your next contribution to the community.

Thanks for your feedback skalio

I really had to tweak and adjust so much, as soon as it felt good enough, i let it stay that way.... and as soon as i realised i cant get it to work perfectly, cause u actually move "pogo" and the "tower" at the same time and there are some flaws i just cant compensate and for example u can stay on the platforms even if they arnt visible lol... but i dont know how to fix that... i would need a "dematerializer"... yeah its nowhere near a perfect execution... but its a very tricky concept, as soon as i changed something it didnt work anymore haha ^^ (u can easily get stuck too or fly trough the air haha if u move really wierdly)

Its just some fun idea i tried to realize as good as possible for my skilllevel and everyone should excuse me for the bugs and flaws that occur sometimes and hopefully recognize that i tried to contribute a fun original level to the community.

But now as u say, i realize that for someone who plays it the first time and choose hard right away, its probably unexpected that the water rise so fast... hmm... but it should be hard hehe ^^ so... its kinda close at the end lol....

You might be right about the Lifts... yeah... they could be faster... maybe i change that.

Thanks for your feedback again.

(working on some other cool level hehe, i actually stopped doing it, to make this, than i got stuck ^^ hehe... now i return to it, or maybe i make something new... got alot of ideas while making this level)

Thanks, man, allthough i realize its not the most playable level, it was more about the idea... really couldnt execute this idea any better, since i had problems with the invisible material and the movement of "pogo" and the tower at the same time.... i had wierd problems like when i tweaked it just a bit... suddenly either the tower or "pogo" moved faster in one direction... only in one direction haha.... it was wierd... at the end i was glade it worked somehow... (+much more problems)

Im kinda glade i now can work on some new level, this cost me some nerves haha ^^ but i learned alot.

**** u, invisible material ! ^^

I really liked this level. It had such a great arcade vibe to it.

The music was perfect for this type level, and the pixelated animation was spot on.

Not much else to say.

Hearted.

Nice level! You didn't quite nail the 3D effect, but the animations were great. The hard difficulty was REALLY hard, but that's OK, since that means I can go back and try it out. Also, the movement just seemed... off somehow. I think it was the fact that you still moved after you stopped touching the stick. Perhaps you'd be better off implementing a less floaty version of the controls if you want to improve the game. Also, jumping up off the side of platforms was kind of awkward.

Still, fun level and thanks for publishing!

Yeah, the controlls often got commented as off, or even terrible or bad. I had a hard time pulling this off any better, because of various reasons... i think at the end i was used to the controlls... and yeah i dont want to write much more about it....

Thanks to your feedback...

.. i wont fix the level... but i learned some more things, im nowhere near a good creator yet, so this was my best work yet haha ^^ but i try to improve myself.... if i do anything like this again, i will first concentrate on good controlls... im actually allready tried how i could make this better, it mainly controlled so awkwardly because of the invisible material.... and i couldnt use any other material in that level... but im allready thinking of ways, on how to make controlls better with 2D Flat Characters, Rubber works great.

I mainly recieved positive comments, im glade about that offcourse, but 1 person wrote something really mean:

"This level is absolutely terrible. Omg the controls are so unresponsive and the water on hard rises way to fast. Obviosly your tester was retarded is he let this level pass with this many flaws. Tip to anyone thinking about playing this level: Don't do it."

Yeah... that was a bit too much for me, to let this pass unresponded.... calling my tester retarded... giving the advise to not play my level.... thats too much... and it comes from a person with no level at all published and probably no idea thats its not THAT easy to pull of something good at all. I mean seriously, like 75% of all community levels in lbp are kinda crappy, some are still fun, but since im creating myself, i have a clue on how much work got into some levels.... writing such bull**** is pure ignorance.

Anyways... probably nobody cares haha....

Everyone likes to read positive comments about their levels, but since i wanna improve as a creator i take the negativ comments seriously, so i learn for my next project... it just should be constructive and not too mean, it doesnt need to get personally, but its my fault if i take kiddies like that seriously anyway...

Thanks again, for playing and writing in this thread.

See ya, when i post my next level here ^^

Yeah, there's always gonna be that person who is just out there to make people feel bad. He probably would have said the same of any level, despite how good it is.2012-12-12 22:01:00

..i forgot to mention that i really liked the ascension to heaven bit at the end

thx man, i waited for somebody to say this haha ^^ cause i think i got that quite good.

The Level is more about the idea and the credits parts and some other things are just for humor, i didnt take that level too serious....
But i learned alot... as said, next time i do something like this, i really concentrate on the controls first, i could have made it better.

I allready published 2 Levels which got played like pretty often... 1 got played 2000 times and had this unique idea of transforming The unfinished Swan into LBP and i made a terrible Leveldesign i pulled out in like 1 or 2 hours haha ^^ and this level had "terrible" controls... and got played like 1000 times.... if i would have realized it got played that much i probably would have put more effort in it to fix those things...

But its not about the plays.

Its about making good Levels.

Its just as a new guy still im a little player wh*r*e. lol ^^ i realized this haha ^^ but i wouldnt be satisfied just making a dozen shark survivals, lol, so i just get plays... no, no... i wanna make interesting levels. (which get alot of plays haha)

Hey Rough-Tea, I did play this level a number of times. I never made it to the top on hard but I did give it a number of tries. You did a great job with the pixel art for the character. I also liked the slight shifting of the platforms. It was a nice nod to the original game. The gears under the rising platforms were a nice touch as well.

Most of the issues of the level have been already mentioned. The biggest issue for me was the little guy's nose getting stuck on the platforms. Well that, coupled with hard being completely unforgiving made it pretty frustrating. I do plan to make it to the top though, my OCD will keep me coming back.

Thanks for making this.

Hard is pretty hard, but u get an 1337 Score ^^
Omg, your OCD, i had to look what that means.. haha..

I know all the problems mentioned, even when i published it... but yeah... i probably will not change it... but i learned from it.

Thanks for playing.
