The Adventures of Outback Jack level 1

Archive: 9 posts

Hi, everyone! I'm back with my latest level "The Adventures of Outback Jack level 1" This is very different from my usual levels. It is still a platformer but its more of the Mario/Rayman style. Since this is the first level the gameplay is very easy but future levels, and there will be future levels will much more involved. Some bullet points about this level you migh find interesting are:

- A focus on a variety of enemies.
- multiple new gameplay manuevers such as; dash attack (on the ground and the air), parachute, ground pound, wall jumping, and many others that will be introduced in future levels.
- a unique scoring system that revolves around collecting stars. each star gives points but you try to meet a goal for each level which will award bonus points at the end.
- There are many other collectibles throughout this level and the others.
- A faster than normal platforming experience. Jack moves faster than your normal sackboy and his jump is different as well. He jumps higher and falls faster. No floaty jumps here.

So check it out if you get a chance and let me know what you think. Here are some pics, but the pics don't do the level much justice, since there are a ton of effects that I put into this one.

Is there anything Outback Jack can't do. I love all the features you've incorporated into Jack. The ones that stood out the most, among the other features, was the amount of height he gets and the quick descent drop. It forces you to learn and get used to areas incorporated, otherwise you won't make it across certain areas of the platform. I noticed as I progressed that the level got increasingly difficult but not impossible. The stars reminded me of Sonic when the points were rewarded. There were certain parts of the feature that allowed me to do like a jump and accelerated diagonal shot across when pressing I believe the x and square up joystick at the same time. Not sure if that was a glitch feature or an actual feature that Jack can do. I was only able to do it a couple times and did'nt see a tutorial on it. Otherwise this was an awesome level and a must for everyone to try. Well done man2012-12-08 16:44:00

I really enjoyed this level. The character skills reminded me somewhat of modern Sonic games which is cool to me. and you say he don't have floaty jumps and falls faster? huh. the level was so fun I didn't even notice you fixed that. xD but i did see he jumped higher then normal. the parachute skill was great fun and I hope we get more use of it in the future. But yeah I love how this level was more like a real action platforming game. which is something you actually don't see get made much on LBP for some reason.. *mew

But yeah I give the level a 9 out of 10. really great and a must play depending on if you like real platformers. *mew

dude. Brilliant level. I absolutely loved the scenery and just stood still in a couple of spots and admired the craftsmanship put into this. The gameplay was a lot of fun and was well balanced. I loved the variety in gameplay as well. One thing that irked me though was how far apart some of the checkpoints were. I don't recall the exact area, but it was where I had to jump up to a platform (loved the sound on those by the way) then to a ledge where a bat would come down and try and get me, then up to another moving platform where another bat was laying in wait for me. Under a moving rock wall, jump a danger gap, under another moving rock wall and onto a little platform where we learn the jump/slam move. I slid off this platform and had to start this sequence all over again. I also wasn't too fond of the enemies respawing. I've never liked this in video games actually. I think that once I kill it, it should stay dead. Anyway, awesome level that I'm sure I'll come back to. Outstanding work bud.2012-12-09 15:55:00

Really looking forward to see where you take this, obviously this first level has to double up as a tutorial, and I thought you did a brilliant job of tutoring the player one ability at a time while maintaining the quick arcade-y pace you were going for - and the abilities feel just great. The dash and wall jump both have a weight behind them, I didn't have to adjust to them at all, they felt very instinctual and that's (logic hell aside) the toughest part to do.

You posted here a few weeks back that this was going to be a challenging level, but I got the feeling you reigned it in a bit, and I think it was the right call. The level is just such a blast to bounce and dash around in and just generally muck around with all this new *stuff*. The stars are there as a challenge anyway, so you balanced it just right.

I had a massive grin on my face when I hit the scoreboard, ( hence the 'lol' in my I game review ; ) ), thanks for this Alley, loved it.
