Super Mario Brothers Classic

Archive: 11 posts

I just published my take on Super Mario Brothers.

A vita version of the classic, 8bit Super Mario Brothers. The main focus was on recreating the classic gameplay. It includes some of the characters people love from the game , such as working koopas and goombas. It also has a little LBP combos and secrets to spice things up. I hope you enjoy it.

Okay- just played it- took a while to load but I was listening to music and looks at shoes- so no worries.
It was one of the better adaptations. I also took a picture but it looks horrible. o.O

Thanks for playing, your thoughts and the picture. I agree the loading time for levels is insane. It's sad when it takes longer to load the level than play it 2012-12-07 19:09:00

Hi Xenon,

i played it, it was fun... nothing to special, but fun. I remember some other Mario Level that got played for a few 1000 times.... i couldnt believe it lol, since it sucked so hard imo, that i aborted it after a few seconds...

I seen u made some really cool and original Levels for the PSP, so i really wondered why u choose to make a mario level, which exists like a few trillion times lol

Thanks for playing the level Rough Tea. The reason I made the level because the majority of the SMB levels are very superficial. In this level: All the enemies have the LBP mechanics completely hidden. There are no bubbles for the coins. When you kill the turtles they leave a shell. The shells bounce off of pipes and kill enemies for extra points. The screen scrolls with your character. When you go down a pipe I tried to make the transition more like the NES game. I added a timing element to make the flag at the end. Most of the stuff is subtle and will be lost on people who just walk through the level. I just wanted to see if it could be done.

I thought I'd then share the objects if people were interested. The only problem is it turns out that it was a lot more complicated than I original thought. I would have to write up instructions for the objects, which I just don't have the time to do now and won't do later if there is not much demand for it.

I made the SMB level I wanted to play. I enjoyed it. I hope there will be a few other players who will try to get high score and find all the combos and secrets. But considering how horrendous LBPV level loading system is, I am not expecting too much traffic. I myself have stopped playing the game because I just don't have the patience for it.

Sometimes i write commentaries to levels, either in LBP or here and afterwards i realise it sounds kinda mean, allthough i ment it more positively most of the time.

I wrote its "nothing special" hehe, the mechanics behind this level are special. It really is a better adaption than most other Mario Levels, it has better Level Design, its far more fun to play than most and its got the Mario gameplay mechanics implented in LBP Style, and they work quite good.

I didnt even try to go down on a pipe.... i just thought "nahh... he didnt implented that...."

U probably just pulled this off, cause u were curious if u can realize it, in the way u wanted or in any way better than it exists allready and you succeded imo, its a cool level, and i probably imagine the mechanics behind this easier than it really is too, hehe.

Just wanted to say that i found the background a bit boring and maybe one bit to dark, the electricity or plasma effect on the shells unnecessary and if u had put just some round black sticker on top of the pipes, it would be more obvious that u can get down there...

Anyways, just wanted to reply, cause i thought i sounded kinda mean, i enjoyed playing it, i dont really enjoy too much levels... i play them yeah... but some lack fun... even some team picks i just rush trough... one the search for fun, just to realize at the end there was none but some excellent visuals.

Also i gotta say your Level loaded instantly for me.... it was an exception... since most of the time its loading pretty long... sometimes for ages even... a few times my vita frooze haha ^^

it is kinda sad.... since a good online connectivity or a good stable online service is crucial for games where the online part plays a big role... it got better tho, i have to say.... still an big issue... but i stay with lbpv since i only have fun creating with an handheld... its like for example if u like to draw, u want to have your pen and papers ready to hand, if u got an idea.... and i feel that way about lbp ^^ i dont want to turn on the tv... search for the lbp 2 disc, start the ps3, load up the game.. etc... with the vita its faster and easier to access... so i can here and than just do something, put it aside and easily return later and i just need like 10 Seconds or something to continue creating.... its very accessable.

Excuse me for writing to much offtopic hehe... im awake for over 16 hours or something... i dont even know what im writing anymore lol

P.s.:

I hope u just stopped playing but dont stop creating...

As a pretty blunt person I run into the issue often. So, it’s not a problem.

I wrote its "nothing special" hehe, the mechanics behind this level are special. It really is a better adaption than most other Mario Levels, it has better Level Design, its far more fun to play than most and its got the Mario gameplay mechanics implented in LBP Style, and they work quite good.

When I first read your “nothing special” comment I laughed. Not because I though my level was so special just because it was so flippantly dismissive. Considering I saw you played it once and only score around 4000, I didn’t think you spent much time with it and didn’t put much weight into your comment. Which is fine, just playing it was enough. Still I did feel the need to list what I thought set mine apart from what was out there. I had a fully functioning Koopa. Something I have never seen in any LBP Mario level. Mine looks more like a generic turtle. But in order to get the head to change directions it had to be completely horizontal.

U probably just pulled this off, cause u were curious if u can realize it, in the way u wanted or in any way better than it exists allready and you succeded imo, its a cool level, and i probably imagine the mechanics behind this easier than it really is too, hehe.

Thanks, I appreciate that. The logic wasn’t too hard but that bouncing shell gave me a few headaches.

Just wanted to say that i found the background a bit boring and maybe one bit to dark, the electricity or plasma effect on the shells unnecessary and if u had put just some round black sticker on top of the pipes, it would be more obvious that u can get down there...

I will admit, that I did not spend too much time on the background. I was going for a SMB NES look so I tried to keep things very simple. Still, I did not use a single sticker or decorative item in the level out side of the monsters eyes, shell and the flag pole, sorry Taffy. The choice of blue was tough for me. All the lighter blues looked washed out so I went with that one since it offered a better contrast.

The shell being electrified bothers the hell out of me, but for some reason when you use Danger Tweaker it does not give the option to hide the effect of the hazard you choose, just a selection to turn off the sound. (WHY TARSIER?) I think I have a way to fix it but it would require some changes and a complete overhaul of the logic…ugh.

If I put a sticker on the pipe then it wouldn’t be true to the original game. Sure in mine you have to grab but that is part of LBP. I guess I could point people to it but I’ve always put tons of hidden things in my levels knowing full well most people will never see them. I love finding them in games. So I put them in my levels.

Yeah there have been some fun levels but there is no denying that visuals rule the gaming universe which LBP is a part of.

Also i gotta say your Level loaded instantly for me.... it was an exception... since most of the time its loading pretty long... sometimes for ages even... a few times my vita frooze haha ^^

That is the reason I loved the PSP LBP and even the Vita for creation. I have LBP2 have not created a single thing in it.

P.s.: I hope u just stopped playing but dont stop creating...

Ehh, I still play levels once in a great while or when someone I know post something here. I just miss the PSP days when I could take 5-10 minutes getting a dozen or more levels to play at my leisure. The connectivity features and multiplayer are not worth the all the problems they created, imo.

Stop creating, NEVER! :hero:

I know exactly what u ment. that u arnt satisfied with the given blue background options haha, since i messed around with the blue background options just yesterday.... and i tell u what, try out to put some Plastic as Background, and change the color for that... i think u will find something that satisfies u.

Its definetely possible... i did this a 100 times allready... but i forgot where... either if u tweak the options of the material itself or with a material tweaker, but im 100% sure its possible.

When I first read your “nothing special” comment I laughed.

Thats exactly what i ment with too mean... thats why i replied again.

Considering I saw you played it once and only score around 4000, I didn’t think you spent much time with it and didn’t put much weight into your comment.

Played it with another Person... but even if i had played it alone, i probably wouldnt discover much more... i mostly play all community levels once... yeah maybe i should atleast put more time into the levels posted here, since besides pushing those levels, some people want to hear a litte big more feedback about it.

If I put a sticker on the pipe then it wouldn’t be true to the original game.

I missread that first, haha, i read u thought it would be MORE original... but since yours isnt flat 2D it would have made more sense and i still think it would look better.

Sure in mine you have to grab but that is part of LBP.

U could just add player sensor recognizzing the player standing on top of the pipe and a controllinator which activates if u are on the pipe. The Controllinator could be set to the Playerinput option... if u press down a platform dissapears and u fall down... something like that... would be awesome..

I guess I could point people to it but I’ve always put tons of hidden things in my levels knowing full well most people will never see them. I love finding them in games. So I put them in my levels.

I put them in my levels too lol... the difference is my levels suck ^^ hehe.... but im getting better.

RT - I'm fine with the blue I have now. It's not perfect but it does the job.

On the turtle shell, I think what your talking about is editing a material that has turned into a hazard manually, in which case yes you can remove the visual effect. But on the Danger Tweaker that option is missing. Since I need to turn on the hazard in the logic I'm stuck with it.

On the pipe. I think the effect I made works pretty well and Im fine with having players having to grab instead of just pushing down since that is the standard method in all the LBP. If you want to check it out you can at The tall pipe just left of the opening in the ground. It the only spot in the level you can't go back from. Just stand in the center of the pipe and hit the right trigger. I also choose not to make it obvious for players. Even if only one person finds it on their own, Im happy.

So, i played it again, even got a top score ^^, allthough i didnt got a good score at the flagpole.

Never played much LBP Mario Levels, since most of them arent worth to play them, especially with the vita loading times im choosing a bit more carefully, what i wanna wait for like 1-2 Minutes... and if i really wanna satisfy my mario appetite, i just play the originals... (still got my super nintendo with mario allstars)

Anyways, i dont think u just copied the level layout of the original mario... i think its different, but its excellent. Its the simple things, like those 2 platforms where u can shoot the turtles separately on the Piranha Plants to score some good points, yeah and other gameplay details which makes the mario platformer games so great.

Still... the things i mentioned, i would have made them different, but its your level... your attempt on it...

(that the pipes got no hole... haha... i dont understand why u want to keep that, not even that it looks better and gives the player a better clue that u can probably go down on some pipe... its just not visible in the original cause its flat 2D, but its probably there, its visible in 3D/2,5D Mario Titles... makes no sense really... but its your choice...)

But on the Danger Tweaker that option is missing.

I didnt know that, it sux.

First let me just say thanks for all your input Rough-Tea. I am glad you liked the level and had fun with it. I also am going with your advise on the pipe. I made the top black to clue people in on the fact they also can go down the pipe and included some clues to the other secrets in the level as well.

Thanks again.
