I would like to take a moment...

Archive: 10 posts

Hello everyone. I would just like to take a moment to say a few things, if it won't put you out too much. *ahem* Here it goes:

I played Little Big Planet 1 and 2, but I never devoted the time to learn the editor inside and out, so I never really built anything with it ? something I do honestly regret. When LBP Karting came out, though, I was elated. Finally I would get to live out one of my childhood fantasies: getting to build my own Mario Kart tracks.

I took the time to watch a few tutorials, got a couple of ideas, and put together my first track. Boy, I was proud of that track. I learned as I went, and everything wasn't perfect, but I really liked what I had done. I know now that it was rubbish, and that's all your fault... but that's a good thing, and I'm getting to why; bare with me.

For my next track, I wanted to do something really special. I had played all of those exceptional Mario Kart clones that people had done, and a few other great rides, so I wanted to do something impressive myself; something that would blow people away. A memorable track. A track that would go down in LBP Karting history.

Thus began my venture into creating my Metroid inspired track. I sat for hours and hours, making detailed sprites and designs, backgrounds and vines. I laid out my track, started plugging stuff in, and laying stuff out. "It's going to be incredible," I thought. "Extraordinary!" I wasn't sure about things like logic, though, so I sought out a community of experienced builders to learn from, and others to share creations with. I found you. I found you, and I joined the site, and looked at your tracks, and watched every video TheAdipose posted on YouTube, and I came to a very abrupt conclusion:

This track is !#@$ as well.

Yeah, that's your fault too... but I love you for it. Now, the designs and backgrounds I made weren't crap, but the track itself needed serious refinement. I have been on this site for less than a week, and I have learned more in just a few days from the extensive and comprehensive resources this community provides than I learned in all my time in those tutorials, or experimenting via trial-and-error. I learned from your experience, and your excellence. It wasn't discouraging; it was inspiring. It has lead me to completely rebuild my track from the ground up, and it is much better because of it. Now I really can't wait to share it when I am done.

What I am getting at here is quite simple: Thank you. Thank you for participating in this community, for your hard work, dedication, and creativeness. Thank you for your help, your contributions, and for making LBP Karting even better than what shipped in the box. You are all, quite frankly, inspiring to me, and I want to make better creations because of it.

Sorry for being a big sap, but I assure you it is sincere. You guys rock. I hope I am able to continue the tradition by contributing to the community and assisting others. 8D

I didn't really help you so I know that post isn't for me, but I definitely agree how helpful this forum is. While some of the rules can be a little strict(e.g. no double posting) it really is one of the best forums around, LBP related and not 2012-12-05 05:21:00

Yay for positivity! More of this taking charge, and less blaming of the tools! 2012-12-05 09:32:00

The individual final product is what matters. What you're making is brilliant. And you better keep going with it!!!

Some things are thermo-heavy as well. Eventually, you will have to sacrifice certain logics for certain aesthetics and so on. We have many talented creators, and it's the idea that makes the product. Tools get learned over time. Each track I've made I've found out a big part of something new. And with the time and passion you're putting into that track it can only lead to good things.

Look up, not at what other people are making. They are learning just like the rest of us.

There are walls in art. But once you climb them you will progress.

Wow, reading the vague title of this post had me expecting that it would be another thread that complains about how much a member hates LBPK, so it sure was a pleasant surprise when this was about someone's excitement about the game and positive thoughts about the community! Thanks so much for posting thing. We certainly could use more of it. I know that there are a lot of people in the community who love the game (just look at all the levels being posted and the fact that we are gaining new members every day), but it's easy to love the game and say nothing while the negative minority voice their opinions loudly.2012-12-05 12:19:00

Glad the vids have inspired ya - but of course mainly its the creativity of the levels in the vids which is the inspiration!

I also think its an important lesson to never publish a level too soon - and don't be afraid to start over, replace, tweak etc until you're completely happy - otherwise whenever you replay your own levels you'll spot the things you wish you'd changed!

That said - I am looking forward to seeing your series whenever you feel its ready for community consumption!

Thank you all for your kind comments. I was entirely sincere in what I said; coming to this site has inspired me, and made me want to work harder to make better content. I have about 10?X5 new ideas thanks to this place, and some thing have occurred to me that never would have if it wouldn't have been for seeing your tracks and reading/watching your advice. I am really, really excited about my new track now, and if it ends up being exceptionally fun to drive on, it's in part because of you and your ideas.2012-12-05 23:16:00
