What's with all the lock?

Archive: 15 posts

Just because something is old news, or something in feedback may not happen doesn't mean nobody should be able to still discuss it.2009-01-17 17:25:00

There's a good chance that the thread that was locked is because there is already an old thread with the same information. Possible identical threads.2009-01-17 17:29:00

Then won't a merge suffice?
I don't see the problem if the first thread with the news is an old one.

I think it's because we don't want old threads coming up. We don't want the members to think that we're way behind or anything. Why don't we talk about the new news? 2009-01-17 17:41:00

Because old threads have died, from lack of interest. There's no need for them to be brought back.

But evidently the person who made the new topic has interest, and new members may too.
There's no benefit of locking them.

I half expected DrunkMiffy to lock this thread as a joke. XD2009-01-17 18:22:00

It also makes the forum seem messy. If threads have died, then they have no need to be brought back. Newer threads deserve the attention and posts, not ones that have already gone..2009-01-17 18:24:00

I don't really think any topics particularly "deserve" more attention and posts, as long as there's still something useful to add to them.

If, I dunno, maybe there was a topic on the LittleBigPlanet Popup Shop which was up in Manchester and London a few months ago, and it reopened or something.
Would a new topic, or if an old topic on it was bumped, be locked because the Popup Shop was around months ago so it's not really news any more?
(I guess it opening again would be news, but I cba thinking up a better analogy).

Oh yeah, and even if something's old, doesn't mean everybody already knew about it. If people still want to discuss it, what's the problem?

Before I say anything, are you referring to a specific topic or set of topics, or is this just a general complaint?2009-01-17 19:22:00

It's a general complaint.
Well, there are a few reasons a thread would be locked:

It's purpose has been served.
It has gone way off topic.
It is inappropriate.
There is a thread or post that deals with the same issue, and it is not outdated in either time or terms of information.

I don't see what you're explaining, honestly. Feedback is for staff more than anything; we allow discussion here so we can get a handle on what users think of the suggestions. However, if something will likely never be implemented, there's no point to a thread discussing it.

I'd like to take a recent example. The "Adult" Forum (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=7497) suggestion was open for maybe 24 hours. I missed replying in it.

But could I really have enriched the conversation? I don't think so. Work arounds were suggested, the official position was mentioned and discussed a few times, problems with the suggestion were made...

Basically, I don't really mind or care if it was locked. The way Quozl ended it made sense to me. If it was just left open either the argument would have kept going around in circles or people would have started going seriously off topic.

If you really have a new suggestion on a locked topic, you could write a PM to a moderator. But just continuing an argument that is not really going anywhere is, well, silly.

I don't think the staff are being heavy handed, either. As Forsaken once said in a different thread, you don't argue with the police, that's just a stupid thing to do. The staff ARE the police of this forum. There are ways and methods to discuss things with them, including the feedback forum, and there are ways to monitor the appropriateness of staff, both internally and externally from themselves.

It was before I came on, but I understand Marino, a former user, was once a moderator. He did not do things appropriately and stepped down from being a mod voluntarily. His behaivour continued to deteriorate, and he started committing infarctions. He was warned and penalised, until it got to the point of his account being permanently banned despite all these warnings. And this was someone who had I think 100 reputation points, over 2,000 posts, and was the 3rd most active member on the forum.

So... trust the staff. I think they are doing a good job with what they are doing.

Elbee23 explained it very well. Good job.

PM a staff member. We'll do our best to make sure you either a) have a place to post your thoughts or b) understand why we don't want discussion to continue.
