SA's Grand Review Compilation #1

Archive: 11 posts

20. It's amazing, isn't it?

Somehow in the course of less than a month, I've written about 20 LONG reviews for 20 different levels. A lot of time and effort went into writing these, not to mention a near sleepless night for something I'm not even getting paid to do, but I've officially hit the 20 mark, which for me feels like a big deal.

I'd be celebrating right now, but it's late so I won't. I will on the other hand briefly go over all the reviews I've had thus far and give a few lines explaining what it was like to review the level, maybe throw in some second opinions of levels, and in some rare cases even RESCORING. So, here's the damage so far:

The Final Frontier (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=5876) and Sonic's Aid 2.0 (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=5909), both done by super_sonic5411
These were the two official first reviews I ever did on this board, they are pretty much the birthgivers to this whole little experiment. Final Frontier was fun to review, really got me in the mood. Sonic's Aid didn't seem quite as great in my opinion, mostly due to various problems I generally had with it, but neither was especially bad.
Final Frontier - 7.0 / 10
Sonic's Aid - 6.0 / 10

H.A.T.E. (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=5879) by Voltaire and Surf's Up (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=6341) by Chillum007 were technically level reviews I did BEFORE I even had a spot for reviewing, so they are actually older than the review section. I think it was before I had any obligations to give really thorough reviews, so really they both felt fairly short and choppy in comparison to newer things. After playing the levels again, I'm still fairly convinced that H.A.T.E. is still one of the best levels ever made, while my opinion of Surf's Up may have deteriorated ever so slightly. It's not a bad level, but it ended up being more "spontaneous first time" fun than I thought it would be.
H.A.T.E. - 10 / 10 (Way to go man)
Surf's Up - 7.5 / 10 (RESCORED)

Speaking of Chillum, he later asked me to review an earlier level of his, Monkey in the Jungle (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=6340), which in my opinion didn't even remotely compare to his latter creation.
Monkey in the Jungle - 4.5 / 10

Good or Evil (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=5880) was one of the first truly amazing levels I played when I started the review process, ironic that is was created by Neverynnal who is to a degree a rival in the reviewing process. Yeah, we do it different ways, but all that really matters is that the job gets done. The level is still just as solid as before
Good or Evil: A Knight's tale - 9.0 / 10

The couple that go by Catiers and xkappax are really to be commended. They both submitted fabulous levels that both seemed in different ways festive and perfectly timed for a holiday season, not to mention they still stand amongst some of the best levels I've reviewed. Centrallia (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=6143) and Fall of Winter (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=6144) are both amazing stages that share a Yin/Yang relationship, and I'm still waiting for the one level that they syncronize to the point of making the next most amazing level the community has yet to see. I honestly think these 2 put together have the potential.
Centrallia: A Ghost Story - 7.5 / 10
The Fall of Winter - 9.0 / 10

Before I reminisce over the review of the very ingenious Which Way is Up? (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=6199), I would like to personally apologize to Walter-Kovacs. Looking back at this gem of a level, I realize that maybe I was a tad harsh on the level, and after going through a 2nd time with 3 people (on a stage designed for 1 person) I came to realize that it really is a lot better than I gave it credit for. WC, I gotta say, this level was just overall amazing.
Which Way is Up? - 8.5 / 10 (RESCORED)

As we all know, SuperPhillup was banned, and after examining the grounds by which it happened, he honestly had it coming, but despite his recent folly, his earlier level submission was anything but. 0-1 (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=p=100217#post100217) was excellently made and carried a certain consistency rarely seen in levels, and after playing his most recently created 1-1, I am almost certain that this series is gonna get amazingly good.
0-1: The Warehouse - 7.5 / 10

And now, a brief mention of A Horror Level V1.5 (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=6352).........and that was really about it, I really don't feel like talking about this one, because it was just plain frustrating. Might be funny to read though
A Horror Level V1.5 - 3.0 / 10 (RESCORE)

wexfordian has given me 2 levels to tinker with, and in all honesty I hope any future levels he makes goes well, but the ones I played felt less than stellar. While Little Fish, Big Pond (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=p=114286#post114286) didn't really seem to do much for me, I somehow ended up having to change my standards after suffering through The Insane Asylum (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=7413). Better luck next time dude.
Little Fish, Big Pond - 5.0 / 10
The Insane Asylum - 3.5 / 10

Speaking of doubles, I also just got done reviewing a 2-parter from xbriandeadx, who I assume is working on the third part of his "demonic mines" series (TACM (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=p=114465#post114465) and HW (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=p=123751#post123751)). Hopefully the third part will surpass the first 2 while remaining true to the "dark" atmosphere.
The Abandoned Coal Mine - 7.5 / 10
"His" World - 6.5 / 10

I don't really have anything more to say about these 2 other than what's already been said, but here's some recognition to JTTDT (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=6679) by Elbee23 and Tunnel Up!!! (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=p=119139#post119139) by blizzard_cool. Although, I will say that somehow, these 2 levels give me very similar vibes. You 2 could be friends.
Journey through the digestive tract - 6.0 / 10
Tunnel Up!!! - 6.0 / 10

Timmy's Dream (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=7070), as many can see, was an especially fun treat for me,
And it gave me a chance, no matter how small, to try something different, not similar at all.
Though the rhyming review may seem much too long, the level was fun thanks to good ol' Hexagohn.
So I thank you, good sir, for providing this stage, and I hope everyone plays it to the very last page.
Timmy's Dream - 9.0 / 10

Speaking of amazing levels, Risen was responsible for showering me in his masterpiece Metal Revolution (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=p=114360#post114360), which totally caught me off guard for a number of reasons. First of all, it was simple yet amazingly complex. Second, it was generally very fun and somewhat addictive, with minute flaws that would take a true excavator to unearth and even then no one would care because they were too busy enjoying the level. Finally, I was surprised at how unpopular it was, almost no one has played this level and that seems pretty darn sad since it is just so amazing. Hopefully, things will start looking up for this stage, maybe it will get a little more attention, who knows, but I wish you the best man.
Metal Revolution - 9.5 / 10

Finally, the MGS pack (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=6404), which was a special review that I actually had to pay for beforehand , but all in all I had a lot of fun reviewing it and I hope everyone gets a chance to play with the paintinator.

So what's next, my queue list still stands strong with about 18-19 entries still to go. Maybe hitting another 20 will come up pretty darn fast (but not too fast I hope, writing these takes a while). Granted some of them are Special Reviews (which aren't really reviews so much as rants) and a few of them are ones I picked for reviewing a long time ago, but the future looks to be fun. Thank you everyone who has stuck with me this long, and let's have fun, the only way us proud Sackpeople can.

On a side note, don't forget to check out the other special I wrote about the music levels (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=7425)

I'm thinking of making the worst level out there and then force you to review it.

Your reviews are interesting to read and certainly different to the cookie cutter review stereotype you find in most media. Great job on doing so much so quickly. 2009-01-17 23:29:00

Very impressive, soooo many reviews. I couldn't even keep up with the 5 requests I had gotten. I feel bad for NinjaMicWZ because I realized his review might have made the level look bad. If I had done a few more it would be more obvious I was just rating harshly lol.2009-01-18 01:12:00

Man I never even thought of what the world of LBP would do for people who like reviewing games.

Because for people who already enjoy platformers it's opened thousands of possibilities.
