Metroid Track

Archive: 14 posts

Hello there. Since this is my first post, I suppose I'll introduce myself. My name is J.C. Wigriff ? or just Wigriff for short. Recently I made a video for my website (www.JCWigriff.com) which was a '90s gaming flashback video, and it contained heavy Metroid themes, and some scenes from a couple Mario Kart entries (namely MK64 and Super Mario Kart.) The video gave me an itch, and the next thing I knew I was at the store snatching LBP Karting off the shelf. Now I'm obsessed. I can't get enough.

This obsession has lead to me starting a project that is probably entirely too ambitious for an amateur track builder, but I'm attempting to tackle it nonetheless. I have started a Metroid track. The track will basically take someone on a tour through Zebes, mainly inspired by Super Metroid. The track will start on the surface by Samus' ship, will go through Crateria, through Brinstar upper and lower, through Maridia, Norfair, and then through Tourian with a big jump over Motherbrain, and back out.

As it stands, Norfair is mostly done, Brinstar lower is about 75%, and Brinstar upper and Crateria are sitting at about 50%. Here are some pictures of my workshop, and of some images from the track thus far.

Thank you for reading, and for any feedback.

EDIT:

I will keep this thread updated, and will let everyone know when the beta finally gets published and goes live. Thanks.

Good grief, this does look ambitious. I'll surely be keeping an eye on this, it looks very cool!2012-12-01 18:17:00

Thank you so much. Yeah... I have put at least 20 hours in this so far, and maybe even 30. I still have a ridiculous amount of enemies and background objects to make. The biggest challenge? Trying to fit it all in the level without topping off the thermometer. lol

EDIT:

A couple of new pictures for the day. I decided to go old school sprite style for most of the smaller enemies. What do you think? Also, the other picture is my best attempt at a bubble door from Metroid. I... didn't really know how else to do it. I'm not entirely happy with it. It's passable, but I'm anal. lol

I think this belongs in the project section as it isn't yet published. But I can not wait until that happens!

Go old school sprite. I have no idea what the average age is for this game, but I know a lot of us come from LBP/2 and the inner platformer in us is still there. And there is something wonderfully charming about old sprites in the new gen.

Thank you so much for the feedback. Sorry for putting this thread in the wrong section. I concur that sprites have a certain charm to them that is pretty undeniable. I am biased, though, because I am about to be *cough* 31 *cough*, so I grew up on NES, SNES, Genesis, etc. The level will be a blend of sleek and retro, but most of the enemies will be styled after sprites.

I think I may actually do a Dragon Quest/Warrior themed level next. Go Slimes!

Here is the newest edition. Also, I am likely to redo Ridley. I am getting much better at building these things, and I think I could make Ridley look more accurate. That might be something I do after the track is published in beta, though.

Here is Motherbrain, ready to go in her tube. I had to base this off the NES Motherbrain. The SNES Motherbrain was too complex. I did use the color scheme from Super Metroid, though.

I figure it's close enough.

UPDATE: Motherbrain is now in the bubble. What do you think?

I'm not sure how I have overlooked this until now! I am a HUGE metroid fan (in fact I think it was just yesterday that I told someone that I would probably hold off on Wii U unless a Metroid is announced ) and you are doing an incredible job recreating stuff from the game! I have not regretted the fact that there is no online create until this point I know that you are having a bit of a rough time with tech and I would LOVE to be able to come in and help you do everything you want with a level about a franchise I love as much as I love Metroid.

How is your thermo doing at this point?

I'm about 70% full on thermo since the rebuild, and I have all the sections of the level made (Crateria, Brinstar upper, Brinstar lower, the Maridia tunnel, Norfair upper, Norfair lower, and Tourian.) Motherbrain is in place, and I am starting to add objects and decorations throughout Crateria and Brinstar upper. That's where I'm at at 70%. I think I might be able to fit everything else I want, and STILL get to add another section on the map for "the escape" after Motherbrain. I am pretty efficient, but I don't know how much thermo the logic I will need will take up. Most of the stuff is on basic path-driven motors.

Thanks for the compliments. I'm glad you're excited. I know I am.

As a warning, I believe the thermo has a bug where as you delete stuff, it does not decrease. The issue may have been resolved, but I know that I experienced it with Tree Top Trouble, and I have seen other reports where people have filled up 75% of the thermo and then tried deleting everything in the entire level and the thermo still stuck at 75%.

So, I say all of this just to recommend that you don't copy objects over and over to test how they will work. Instead, just move things around that are already in the level to see how they look. Normally I tend to copy a lot because in other LBP games I could just delete a copy later on and the thermo would be reduced. It seems that with LBPK it can be dangerous to create in this way.

All of this came to mind because we were messing with skree's last night and I imagine it would be easy to place them all over the level but then delete some and then add some more, etc... but as you are deleting and adding more you would be continuously raising the thermo since the ones that you deleted would still be taking a toll on the thermo.

I know that until this bug is reported to be fixed I will be very cautious every time I add something, especially as I see the thermo pass the 75% mark

That bug is exactly why I ended up having to do a complete rebuild the first time. I have been very cautious about it up to this point. Thank you for the forewarning though.

It's funny because I will sometimes misplace something, and I will see the thermo inch up a minuscule amount, and i'll go @!#?@! – and it isn't because I'm distantly related to Q-bert, either.
