Video Tutorial #5 - Custom Boosters, Sounds, Emitters, Sponges and Level Design!

Archive: 10 posts

Hey guys!

Time for part 5 of my 'complete guide' to LBPK and this time we're looking at a whole range of ideas like Custom Boosters, Sounds, Emitters, Sponges, Level Design - and more! Hope you find it helpful and of course the level is available to copy from my moon if you'd like it. If you like the look of the level - do go play it and see if you can beat 'Billy's' top time. Theres a thread in the level showcase where you can brag about it.

Thanks always for all the encouragement and feedback from the community, it makes the time spent on the vids worthwhile.

Thanks again for another great tutorial but I was wondering how you do certain things. In some of your tutorials it looks like you get items to just stick to the ground without going to the tweak menu on the object. Or if you move the terrain then the items move with it. Lastly in one of them it looked like you copy and pasted a mountain in your sky track level. Now did I just blink and miss something while you fast forward or is there some small button presses I missed.2012-12-01 18:20:00

"In some of your tutorials it looks like you get items to just stick to the ground without going to the tweak menu on the object. "

--well if its a non dynamic object (i.e. its normal) it will just stay whereever you put it. So as long as you place it correctly on the ground then it is 'stuck' there. Sometimes I make one object.. drop to ground, then clone it and its then already at the right height. But theres no special trick here.

"Or if you move the terrain then the items move with it."
I think you're refering to the FPS level where I lowered the ground and the spawn points appeared to move? I wondered about that too. Again I wasnt using some extra 'trick'. I put down spawn points and weaponators then moved the terrain up and down with deform. It looked to me like the weaponators stayed where they were, but the spawns may have moved up and down. As far as I'm aware I havent done anything else where objects more - enlighten me if I have.

"Lastly in one of them it looked like you copy and pasted a mountain in your sky track level."
If you use the second set of options in terrain, - where the triangle, square, hexagon are... you raise and lower with back shoulders, but you don't actually draw unless you press X. So all I'm doing in that clip is moving the terrain tool around and pressing X wherever I want a mountain. Think of it like the material tool... you move the shape around but it only actually draws where you tell it to.

I had hoped I had explained everything I had done in the videos, I'm deliberately trying to design them so I don't do anything I havent explained in a previous one.

Thanks, again, brill.

You can also preview effects and piston movement and so on by pushing the "up" d-pad button. You stay hovering and don't go into kart driving mode. Good if you want to preview some activity that is too high or remote to view from within your kart. Pushing "up" again resets the level to the point it was at before you first pushed "up" and turns off the level activity.

Thanks for playing my first level, by the way! Your videos gave me the inspiration to dive in and get building

Emitters are the hardest part for me as it stands, so I will be loading this shortly.

EDIT:

YOU DIDN'T MENTION YOU HAVE THAT ACCENT!

You sound JUST like the guy who does the blogcast for Borderlands 2.

Hell yea.

If its something you mentioned previously in a tutorial my bad. I didn't realize the terrain tool did that (for those shapes). And I know about the objects being on a flat plane unless you move them but it just appeared that they moved by themselves and snapped to the ground. I guess I just saw it wrong but thank you.2012-12-02 06:40:00

Adipose, thanks for featuring a lap of my track on your video!! I absolutely love your idea for hiding the jet pack because I too think that the jet pack is a bit of an eye sore. I also didn't know that you could hide a sponge underneath an object. Excellent tips!

If an object is snapped to the ground it will move with terrain. To snap an object to the ground:
1) Place the object
2) Select the object (with x so it is outlined in green)
3) Choice the snap-to-ground option.

This will only work if the object is above the ground.

I love watching your videos, they're very informative and are a great help to me in figuring things out. Please keep it up!

While I was making my course a couple of times while I was placing the bubbles/jetpacks/weapons it was stuck in snap to ground mode so i could just move around and place them directly onto the floor without having to raise/lower. Is there any known way to trigger this or is it just a fluke? Cause I cant seem to get it to do that when I /really/ want it to do that.

I dont know - but I do know that there are some weird bugs when it comes to selecting and unselecting things. For example when I place an object then pick the capture object tool - it often tries to place a different object!

My guess would be something like.. if you snap an object to ground then immediately start placing other objects or items, they may also snap to ground. I havent tested that - but I, like you, have also found that objects sometimes just need automatically ground placed.
