STAR WARS: Episode V: Dagobah: err...Etc! (Special Edition)

Archive: 22 posts

Hey Rebels!

Just published my latest update to the series...

http://lbp.me/v/gtrnc9

I've (kind of) gone back to basics with this one, a ton of grabbing, swing and jumping platforming, with a few twists along the way. I've been gagging to muck around with some Sackbot abilities for a long time, but have held off because when I started to re-do these levels, I knew this was the perfect point to start introducing some cool moves.

I also wanted to really tell a bit more of a story with this one, so anyone with a distaste for cutscenes should probably steer clear.

Hope you enjoy, and any feedback or criticism welcome...!

Wow, where do I start. Well, first this level followed the actual movie with the exception of LBP humor that we've all expect from Jules. Secondly, it gives incredible challenges for those platform enthusiast's a dream come true. And thirdly, this has got to be the best level of the year, if not since LBP first came out for when the Sackie awards are to be given again. I can go on about the incredible display of workmanship on this level, but you have to play it to experience what I have. What are you waiting for and go play it now2012-11-30 01:26:00

Wow, simply put this is a masterpiece. As Tripple_sss stated above the level follows the movie perfectly, with added bonus LBP humor! The environment created is just as captivating as the storyline. I appreciate the level of dedication you've put into making sure your LBP version was just as good as the movie. Bravo sir and a tip of the hat to you! Anyone who has not played this level yet needs to!2012-11-30 18:07:00

I think you should create your own episodes 7-9.

Brilliant level as always, Jules. The swamp visuals looks excellent thanks to the designs of environment and creatures. The variety of gameplay, including riding the flies and the grappling hook race, makes this platforming game even more exciting. I forgot about the tiny piranha and Yoda's dialogue part in your original LBP1 installment until I played this level. Those bits are a crack-up. I did find a couple of bugs, though (no, not the critters in this level ). At the beginning of the level, after I dropped to the water, a group of piranhas attacked me, then they ate me again once I respawned on one of the stone steps. Another bug is near the first checkpoint of the acid flowers, the Star Wars logo appears four times. And I think I lost more points than unusual when I respawned to that checkpoint. Amazing job. Can't wait for the next chapter taking place in planet Bespin.

OVERALL: A yay, heart, and positive review

Really liked how you added abilites as you progressed..and the platforming using them was incredibly fun. Pounding stumps and flipping enemies with the butt slam was executed perfectly!

The visuals are gorgeous and unique, great lighting, you nailed the humid swamp planet vibe.

Why did you plasmafy the water in the 2nd part as opposed to sticking with the predator fish? I plasma death was off-putting, fish death fits more appropriately.

Loved every bit of this level, even the wobble bolts!

Woot! Fantastic, like always. It is a little tricky lining up some of the jumps, but not stupidly hard. The mixture of humour and different control schemes worked so well also. The controls for the different areas all worked flawlessly also. Great stuff!2012-12-02 00:46:00

I'll see what I can do about the first one, they're on a timer that I'd adjusted to the time it takes to respawn, but I'll take a look. The second one is completely random, no idea about that at all... : /

Glad to hear you you liked the vizzies, the nature pack decos are way over-used so I made a big effort to try and find a look that used them without looking like Nature Platformer 456.Theres a fine line between grey swamp and summer meadow I found, heh.

About the plasmified water, yeh, the fishies are a much more satisfying death : ) I switch to a bot for the second and third levels though - Is there a way of getting a sackbot in water I don't know about??

I tells ya, the hoops I've jumped through to get that double-jump and pound working the way I wanted, you wouldn't believe. I googled and tested about 5 different youtube tutorials, but they all had a niggle i didn't like, so I adapted one that worked on impact sensors, but it didn't take into account when you grab a swinging object and jump from it, instinct tells you you should be able to do a second jump, but grabbing doesn't properly register as an impact -so I'm simulating an impact by emitting holo that impacts the player when he grabs something to swing from. Such a load of faff!!

I've done heaps of tweaks over the weekend, players are finding this one tough.

I thought you?d found a way, I just assumed you used a sackbut for the first part too, lol! It all makes sense now. It's a real pity the game chooses to treat player controlled sackbots differently?jump too vigorously on the end of a log and it dips into the water enough to zap you.

One thing that was kind of missing and would really help sell the swamp visuals is vines, lots of vines, vines dripping in moss, etc. You?ve got great visuals in the playable layers and lots of gnarled branches in the back layers, but some vines, particularly in the front layers, would give a much more immersive feel (these could just be sticker panel?)

If it helps, there was just one area that gave me some trouble (and you may have already changed it). There?s a spot with 2 snails that travel up and down vines, you need to swing/jump from the snails while they are at the bottom, then again when they move to the top. I just could not make the jump from the last snail to the platform. I ended up swinging to get on top of the snail so I could double jump.

The section with mosquito you hang from and need to keep pace with is also pretty tricky, but it was also my favorite part and brilliantly done?I think anyone who gets that far should be able to complete the section?

Finally got a chance to play this last night. Awesome awesome awesome and more awesome.

I don't think there was a single part that I didn't say "Wow! That's a great idea!". It seems you've reached a level where you've about mastered the tools, and are unencumbered by "normal" LBP platforming ideas.

Yes, a TON of this was tricky. It took me many plays to get past certain areas. I was joined by NinjaMicW and DeboarDave during the mosquito-flying part - having others looking over your shoulder while taking that on isn't something I would recommend.

But - as fullofwin says - many of the trickiest areas were also some of my favorites. I think lessening the difficulty would give younger players an easier time, but I think it would make the game less fun.

This set of levels seems to have quite a bit of inspiration from other games. The stomping to flip over the creatures in the cave was reminiscent of Mario Brothers, and the mosquito section reminded me of Rayman. Great stuff!

Anyway, glad you're still making these. At least to me, the release of a new JulesyJules "Star Wars" level is still an event.

I thought you’d found a way, I just assumed you used a sackbut for the first part too, lol! It all makes sense now. It’s a real pity the game chooses to treat player controlled sackbots differently…jump too vigorously on the end of a log and it dips into the water enough to zap you.

Yeh, went regular with Part One because I wanted a 'grapple through the trees section'. I actually spent about half an hour going crazy looking for a bot while I was making the level, only to remember there wasn't one. : )

One thing that was kind of missing and would really help sell the swamp visuals is vines, lots of vines, vines dripping in moss, etc. You’ve got great visuals in the playable layers and lots of gnarled branches in the back layers, but some vines, particularly in the front layers, would give a much more immersive feel (these could just be sticker panel…

I went in and added some in a few spots, and you're absolutely right. I played about with some when I was starting to get the look together ages ago, and they kinda fell off the to-do list. The thermo in 1 & 3 is begging for mercy, but looks effective where I managed it.

There’s a spot with 2 snails that travel up and down vines, you need to swing/jump from the snails while they are at the bottom, then again when they move to the top. I just could not make the jump from the last snail to the platform. I ended up swinging to get on top of the snail so I could double jump.

Gotcha. Fixed : )

Super nice stuff

Glad you got the Mario vibes - you have a ground pound you gotta have flip-me-uppies! Yeh, old school platforming was exactly what I was trying for in the last part. Thanks Cubb, really appreciate your comments.

Of course Ive qd it, im sure itll be as great as the rest of them!
I loved all the wildlife and gorgeous scenery - there's really nothing to nitpick about other than the holes in my pants left by those pirahna things. As great as your Star Wars series is I have wondered if there's any other one-offs you'd like to turn your hand to and what the result might be. Father Ted Survival? Power Rangers? Maybe Songs Of Praise The Quest. Thanks for the feedback on my level, Ive fixed it since you found a couple of game breaking flaws - I wasnt sure if you managed to get further at the start so here is the link if youre still interested, Chars!
