Actors Brain and pathing

Archive: 10 posts

I have been pulling my hair out trying to figure out how to get the actors brain to work right when it is set to 'follow path'. I have figured out that you need to attach a battery to it or put it in a sequencer to get the other options working (like jump), but everything I try with pathing seems to fail. I have even tried adding a path following motor to no avail.

I haven't done this yet in the full version, but in Beta I found that Brains following a path would only work in a published level - not in play mode from the moon. I pulled my hair out too, watching the AI drive in circles and crash, until I tried publishing.
Make sure the Brain is placed on the spawn point you want affected, and try publishing the level and playing from your Earth. I don't think you'll need a motor or battery.

Thanks Pookachoo,

I appreciate the feedback, thought I may have been going nuts and everything was really just fine. I unfortunately missed the beta, so I tried the publishing trick, and it still didn't work, I went back and put a battery to it and that still didn't help on the published level either.

It may not have worked yet, but this has given me new stuff to try to see if I can get it working. If you or anyone else figures it out please post so we all can know.

EDIT: My bad thought you meant getting karts to drive along paths after the 3-2-1. Have you had any results on getting them to move besides some random circles?

Old post:

Got this to work a couple days ago, it doesn't need to be published. But you need to tweak the path (Edit Path and pick up a node and press []), and there should be a setting to allow AI to follow, i do believe you also have to match the tags

Now Actor Brains, however you are on your own, i think they don't even work, been fighting with those for awhile now, and they just drive off in random circles :/

Haven't tried them yet, but maybe Actor Brains only work with Movie Cameras? Try getting them a private trailer. 2012-11-29 12:56:00

I struggled with this as well and eventually gave up. I imagine that it must work because I am under the impression that UFG used the same tools that we have to build the story mode, and in the opening cinematic for a level you will often see karts driving up to the character who is talking to them in that level (which is what I was trying to do in my level). I just couldn't get the character to move though 2012-11-29 13:44:00

THANK YOU JKTHREE!!!

You have found the answer. Oddly when I clicked the square on the path point I saw the AI Ignore option and it had an X by it rather than a check, so I thought the AI would not ignore it, when I thought I might change it for giggles I found the "AI Ignore" had other options such as "Cut Scene" and "Follow". I switched it to "Cut Scene" changed to play mode and BOOM, off goes sackboy like he is on a mission. I can not thank you enough.

Of course, cutscene AI setting, guess that explains why i couldn't get actor brains to work in when the race is going. Rats, there goes my idea of a control scrambling weapon 2012-11-30 01:53:00

Don't give up so quick JK3, the follow mode might work for you. I have not figured out what it is good for.

I have also been learning alot about movie creation, so stay tuned for a post about what I have found out. As a spoiler, here is a list of a few oddties I have found:

1. Limits seem to be set for 4 actors and 4 hoard (this might of course mean that a TOTAL of 8 actors max). Of course, the extra actors work when it is "changed to play mode", but not when it is run as a level. Rather a disturbing bug that had me pulling my hair out. Nothing like getting all the timing down for an entire scene to see it fail when published.
2. Destruction of an actor does not allow for a repawn later. (this one kills me)
3. Actor bots will follow the path generally, the may jump paths, or they may jump off the path and careen around the area.
4. Actor brains seem to be stuck on the original created brain. Sorry to those of you who had Shakespearean intentions. It seems we might be quite limited.
5. Since we are limited on the number of "actors", and repathing an actor back into a scene can be dicey at best, is there some way to get timing set for a decent LONG scene? I think so, I am working on that at the moment.

Well I was wrong. It seems you CAN respawn an actor but it is quite a pain to do. It takes a bit of timing and thought to get it to work right.

I posted how to get the actors to respawn and all the other odd things I found while creating my level "Lost Level:Kapow Jalapeno" in the tutorials forum here:
