Ability to Lock your own threads.

Archive: 3 posts

This probably isn't a big deal but sometimes when I make threads, it's for a question. When I get an answer, I think it'll be a good option to lock our own threads if you think the topic has been discussed enough or your own question has been answered. Of course, we would still need the same moderation for threads that get alittle out of hand but I believe this could help out the mods.

Reasons this would be a good option:

-Help out the moderators.

-Many of the older users with knowledge of the site and rules will lock their old threads that died to avoid bumping.

I'm 95% that this wouldn't be needed but I was just thinking about this and decided to post it anyway, but I think it'll be nice to have.

What is your view point of this?

no... I don't agree. All that will happen is we'll get pages full of locked threads that nobody can post on. People will abuse the system and lock anything when others don't agree with their opinions... in short we go from conversation to dictated beliefs.

The mods do a fine job anyway

edit: thought of a better idea

how about a 'request lock' option on the thread... this will not alert the mods but rather will set up a poll allowing the community to choose if a thread should be locked or not... anyone can select the option but it would need a minimum number of votes to succeed. A time limit would also be in effect and if it didn't reach the number required the poll would disapear and a cooldown period would begin until it could be triggered next. Admins / mods would have the power of veto over any poll results to stop the system being abused. Successful polls would auto lock threads. You'd need a minimum of 100 forum posts to participate in a lock, to stop people using multiple new accounts to cheat the system.

A "request lock" option is better.... auto lock is not a good idea IMO, I agree with you Dave.
I don't think a "request lock" button is completely necessary though. The mods/admins on here are good at responding to requests in threads, and you could always PM them.

The idea of a poll is interesting, but complicated.
