Vertical Roation on Objects

I searched around but cant find much...

I have an idea to create large cylindrical object (the main body) which will have platforms extrude out from the main body.
As a basic example imagine a piece of wood with nails sticking out. The wooden stick is the 'body' and the nails are the 'extruding platforms'.

The player controls the object's rotational motion (with the exception of jump) not the sacbot left and right. This will make the player be always stationary and in the center of the screen and the level moves around the player via rotation.

Running with the same example if there are 2 nails and one is higher than the first nail, the player will jump, then rotate the cylindrical object which would then place the second higher nail underneath them. This will be the main mechanic of the game and I will add challenges, hazards and collectables to make it a little fun.

The main issue I have is that I can not for the life of me work out how to make a object rotate on a different axis except to face out towards you. Is it even possible or maybe a technique / camera trickery to achieve the effect.

I hope I explained the idea well enough its a little hard without visual aid.
I really hope someone is out there to help as once the core mechanic is down I feel there are some really creative things to do!

i think i know what u mean cause i thought exactly bout the same thing, but i just cant figure it out myself too.... and im not really the most skilled creator yet, since i really first started with the vita....

Im pretty sure u ment something like in this game:

Probably it can be done somehow with a Sequencer with the position option... and emitters maybe ( u dont know how long i had to google to find the english expression for it ... hahaha...) ..... or something just with controllinator which are controlled by the players... or something combined..... i have really no idea... the problem with both is.... if u like dont keep pressing a direction the "background" will not move and i think that will lead to problems..... (as u probably can jump a gap without holding a direction all time... its hard to explain, but im sure there will be problems, as allways ^^)

Really i got not much of an idea... how to realize this.... u know that new decoration spinning plates? u would need that, just so, that u can glue items on it, not decorations... the problem is that your idea somehow involves kinda real 3D.

maybe its really just a camera angle thing.... like some really wierd angle lol....


As i said, i know what u mean, but i dont know how to realize it..... maybe u just have to somehow fake it.... so it just seems like it.... like have a an backgroundobject... which is animated and it plays that animation if the players moves (either forward or backwards, maybe with a equalizer) and platforms appear to the right.... placed allready more far away... and they move with the player, but appear just at the very edge of the "tower" or "tree" in visible form.... like they are hidden before... this can be done in various ways...

I dont know if im much of a help... since im still learning.... but im interessted in how to realize this idea by myself... also i think my idea above can somehow work.... maybe i try it... than tell u about it, or show u that level...

Maybe there's a decoration that you can use and put the invisible material on top of it? I don't have the Vita, but I'm assuming this would work.2012-11-28 01:12:00

I think i got an idea.... but it involves, that u play an object with a controllinator.... and it more or less would be "fake" and not a real 3D Tower/Tree with Platforms/Nails in it haha....

But like in Tower Toppler its just 2D either with the visuals giving u the effect of a real 3D Tower...

Im working on another Level atm but i think i start a simple Prototype on this idea.... just because i think i could realize it... i do it with really simple graphics... and if im done i will post it here....

But if its possible without playing in a controllinator.... in any other way.... im not sure of.... i can think of 1000 Problems there...

Just played around some with the Deco Spinning Wheel and some Decos.... u cant get anything glued to a deco... or the wheel... maybe theres some kind of bug/glitch.... which isnt discovered yet... i dont know why they included this wheel which can spin deco in a horizontal 3D kinda way but not objects... maybe they include more 3D possibilites in LBP3...

I dont know if u can somehow realize the idea with the 3D Graphics Glitch... but if u could do that, than u still need to play as a bot or controlled object...

But as i think i might know how to atleast fake it in a special kind of way...


Btw isnt it horizontal Rotation? as its this way "<---- object ---->"

You could create a pretty good effect by just making your level completely out of sticker panel and invisible material. Just have two pieces of sticker panel make up a single platform, one that will show when it's in front of the tower and another when it is behind.

When the platform is front, have only the front sticker panel show, which has a high position in layer. The tower can have a 0 position in layer, so make the back have a negative position in layer. Glue each of those to some invisible material, then make the camera look directly flat at the player. When the player moves right, have all the platforms move in their "circular" pattern to the left (really just going back and forth around the tower).When the player moves up, you can just move the camera up with him.

Well, this would work, except there'd need to be a way to get rid of the invisible material when it's behind the tower... I'm still thinking of the best way to do that.

This definitely sounds like a neat idea!

I actually made it... i will probably make a level out of it since it works quite nice.... this are just the visuals i worked with, made a tower like version and a tree version just to show it here:

U control an object... that black ball.... i didnt see any possibility, doing this idea playing normaly...

The Problem is u need to split the movements, into strict left and right... cause u need to make the platforms move in opposite directions as u move.... im not experienced enough to pull this off, in any other way...

If u move right the Platforms need to move left, to create the "effect" of 3D...

Edit: It looks better in Movement than on the screens haha..... it actually works too, if i add platforms its actually possible to "climb" that tower... i just have to adjust some things... but it works... similar to tower toppler.. and yeah... i could not make it without black backgrounds... but u could probably make but it doesnt look so 3d?ish than.... and i know the tree one looks ugly lol... i aint gonna use it... but i just had an idea with the deco spinning wheel since u can "ghost" it... u can make it move, when the player moves, just like the platforms creating an awesome 3D Effect, on that tree, with Branches moving 3D like....

The thing is... u have to hide the Platforms... so the only appear on the edge for the effect.... thats why i had to make the background black.... and if u make it all flat, u can add other background but it looks really dull and flat than... u need to like... make some 2D Platforms which looks 3D... its all about the visuals than... but the idea works....

Gonna make some neat Level out of it... than i can share this, if u want...it maybe doesnt look as good as this idea could look... and it would be fun pulling this off in any other way...

Im trying to make it somehow fun.... got some cool 3D Effect going on since i used Stickers on the Tower... it gets from dark at the edges to more bright if u "rotate" it...

I change that ball for that little green character from Tower Topplers aka Nebulous since its inspired by it... but i dont like the gameplay of that game haha.... i will make it more platform like... with some elements of it.... its not gonna be a great level, but atleast some unique idea pulled off... and ****it (lol) i learned a lot again.... on how to pull off some logics and that its easy to pixelate charakters into the game...

The thing is...

It would be most awesome, if u can pull this idea off in anyway not playing in a controllinator... since there are some real fun possibilities there... im very limited of what i can do gameplay wise now.... but it works in a whole different way, playing normally, but its probably possible.... that would have great potential as a level.... and if u can do it with other visuals too... like i played around with the deco spinning wheel and it would looks awesome, but it kinda doesnt really work to implent platforms on there....

No, you definitely cannot use the decoration spinner to make platforms, especially since as you make it bigger the spinning becomes less circular and more flat. Honestly I don't know how to do this without a controllinator. Every idea I have is you controlling a highly configured sackbot to make it an illusion that you are controlling it normally.

Oh, and I think the sprite you made looks great!

Yeah, i cant figure it out either..... u know the Problem is, without a controllinator, i cant get those platforms to move with the player, cause as player u can move the left control very sensitively to move... u can move it just a little bit and walk, whilst the platforms with movers cant "walk" and i couldnt adjust it that way, that it goes with your moves ..... its allways too fast and even if u could get that to work, theres other problems.

Anyways.... haha... to get the object with controllinator working with animated sprites haha that was ridiculous... but i got it and it looks nice... learned a whole lot with this level.... a whooooLe lot....

Trying to finish it up soon.... its not gonna be great but still fun... really learned alot with this little project haha ^^ got my controllinator ready for more retro sprite action
