A Few Tips For Faster Racing

Faster Racing

*Edit: Be sure to check out Adi's Track-Making Tutorial (http://www.littlebigplanetarium.com/topic/6546-video-tutorial-5-custom-boosters-sounds-emitters-sponges-and-level-design/page__pid__68960#entry68960) which shows how these tips can be applied, not only to racing, but to creating a good track as well!

After playing quite a few online games, I've noticed a few common trends that can be improved upon when it comes to racing against friends. I'm going to list a few of these trends below, as well as some tips on how to improve your racing skills.

1. Drift, Drift, Drift! Many online players don't drift enough when racing against others. Drifting is the main source of speed for a racer! As you hold your drift, you'll notice sparks beginning to fly out from your back tires. These are a very good thing because they let you know that you will get a small boost as soon as you release your drift. There are four levels of drift spark. While drifting, you will hear small little "beep" sounds that signify which level of drift spark you are at. Each level rewards you with a different amount of boost. In short: Longer the drift, bigger the boost.

2. Drifting is not only for turns. After seeing how useful drifting can be to increasing your speed, why would you limit yourself to doing them around turns? When I'm racing, I race with what is called a snake style. I am constantly drifting throughout the track, back and forth, trying to achieve every possible boost I can get. On parts of the track that are straight, I tend to only keep a drift until I achieve the first level of drift spark. As soon as I see sparks, I use the boost and go directly back into a drift, keeping a constant back and forth, drifting and boosting movement.

The above two tips can have a significant impact on your speed throughout the level. If you can get a boost at the beginning of the race and go straight into this snake style racing, you will retain that same speed from the start and find yourself way ahead the others. To find out how to get a boost at the beginning of a race, check out Adi's video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6iz9WK5l2g&feature=channel&list=UL).

3. Don't over-spin in mid-air. Landing a spin after a jump can give you a good boost as well. The bigger the spin, the bigger the boost. However, if you land sloppily after a spin, it won't give you a boost at all. So make sure you have a secure landing when spinning mid-air. You wouldn't want to miss out on a chance for a good boost.

4. Don't waste weapons. The best time to use a weapon on someone is right before you are about to hit another weapon pod. This insures that you always have a weapon with you, in case you need to defend yourself.

5. Alternate routes are not always faster. This is more of a problem in community tracks rather than the story tracks. Many times when one sees an alternate route, they'll think it is a shortcut. However, sometimes these are just as long as the normal path and they aren't worth the extra effort in trying to pass through them. This also goes for bounce pads and ramps. Many times these things can actually slow you down rather than help you. The best thing to do in a race is test these paths in the first lap and make your decision on which route is faster, next lap.

These are just a few tips for increasing your speed as there are probably quite a few other helpful hints I'm missing. I hope this has helped you and that you will try to apply these next time you race others. If you really want to practice, I'd advise creating a track in create mode and practicing with no one around. This way you won't have to worry about Bots destroying you constantly.

My three main tactics whenever I race online. Guess who comes in first 80% of the time. Anyways, another thing to mention is the Start Line Boost. Basically, hold the Hop/Drift button + the gas (R1+X, R2+X) and let go of the buttons when it says "GO!", you'll get a boost. Pretty useful for those who didn't know it.

Some additional pointers that I found handy as well:

Be a jerk with your mines: Almost all tracks have choke points where players will be funneled through. If you have multi-mines, driving from left-to-right or right-to-left and laying them down in a clean diagonal line can really slow your pursuers down. Be observant where mandatory jump pads puts players; if it forces them to land in the same spot, a well placed mine will stop them cold. This is also true of placing them on boost points; skilled players may be able to avoid them, but most plays will not notice until its too late.
Drifting is ALWAYS faster: This is an addition to OP's points. Some tracks have sticky floors or slow dirt, and drifting through it - even if you get no boost - will result in you going farther faster.
Exploit Corkscrews: Some tracks have upward/downward spiral sections. You will always go inherently slower on these uphill, so instead of conserving boost on one long charge like most players, use the first charge and keep combo-ing it. It can be tricky to pull it off while maintaining a tight curve, but it can give you an edge.

Also, using the boxing glove on a corkscrew will naturally make you go faster downhill, but uphill it has a two-fold benefit: you will travel almost twice the speed of anyone already going up, and the chances of them avoiding you are slim at best.
Exploit Jumps: This is situational, but since you can drive faster than a persons average jump speed, using the fast forward powerup can make or break a race because you will never fast forward into dead space, causing you to clear the entire jump until track is found. I've won tight races just by conserving it till the last, major jump and practically teleporting to the finish line.
Exploiting Resets: This is also very situational, but sometimes letting yourself get hit just as you make a major jump or other long stretch of area with zero track will automatically put you farther ahead or on par with your opponents WITH a weapon. I've sometimes done this when it's clear that I'm not gonna survive that three missile combo bearing down on me, so I minimize the damage to my lead.
