Wow. I was the FIRST one to play this game (there were 0 plays on it when I tried it a little bit ago).

The level was absolutely gorgeous! Very appropriate for LOTR (man that would be a big finger...)

Gameplay was engrossing, and I think anyone who knows the story will be excited to play this - you pulled off the ambience perfectly.

That being said, I uncovered a few issues:

* After the mountain with the rolling rocks I climbed up on the clouds and I was SUPPOSED to swing to the left to grab the next cloud - but I instead swung the cloud to the right and threw myself completely out of the game.

* On the raft part where you are supposed to take the ring and place it into the glass area in the raft using the jetpack - this was working really flaky for me. When I would get the ring close, the raft would move so it was frustrating. Once I got the raft to go to it's destination, I was then supposed to get the ring off the raft. When I would pick up the ring the raft would start moving. Since I was wearing a jet pack the raft pulled me with it so I couldn't get the ring off the raft and onto the ground. I finally grabbed the ring and tried to "throw" it but it didn't make it. I lost the ring and had to quit the game. The is probably a "correct" way to do this, but I thought you may want to know what my little brain had a problem with the first time. I'm going to try it again tomorrow.

However, I would expect a few flaws since I was the only one who ever played it. I'm excited. This has never happened to me before!

GREAT JOB!

Hi Ccubbage,

First of all, thank you for your kind words and for writing again comments and suggests about my levels.

After the mountain with the rolling rocks I climbed up on the clouds and I was SUPPOSED to swing to the left to grab the next cloud - but I instead swung the cloud to the right and threw myself completely out of the game.

I didn't noticed that such a problem could happen. I will take a look at this section to see how i can fix this. Thanks you

Oh! I'm so sorry. Actually, the ring detector in the glass area might be connected to a one way switch set in "direction" that activate in return the piston. I by-passed the "one way switch" yesterday after OCK playtest comments about the raft section. When i saved my levels, i have forgot to reconnect it.
I just had the time to reconnect it this morning (not any time to play...) and i republished it. The raft section might be Ok now.
Nevertheless, thank you for this feedback, because such a bug is one of the most critical thing that could happen in a level.

However, I would expect a few flaws since I was the only one who ever played it. I'm excited. This has never happened to me before!

GREAT JOB!

Thank you

OK so I played this a couple of days ago, here are my thoughts:

Well I really have the begin with The Shire, it looks perfect! The hobbit's homes look exactly as they should and I particularly liked the small details such as the cracks on the walls, it really made everything feel more "alive". I thought the vines you created in the foreground looked great and the shafts of light were beautiful here. The pond with fish jumping out of it was a nice touch too.

Bilbo's house was charming and the scale of things was very well done. The ring hanging over the fireplace brought a smile to my face.

I loved walking through the sunflowers which are really beautiful creations. The lighting here was once again amazing.

The whole carriage ride with Gandalf was one of the most enjoyable moments for me. The wizard looks just as he should and I liked the way he spoke to you throughout the ride.

The platforming sections that followed were not too complicated but they worked well and the aesthetics were nice, I particulalrly liked the clouds.

The raft section had some incredible visuals. Unfortunately I was not able to pass it which leads me to

Suggestions:

- It was literally impossible for me to take the ring off the raft without it moving back in the other direction and thus not giving me enough time to reach the other side with the ring. Because of this problem I was unable to finish the level. Please tweak your switch radiuses here.

- The one other suggestion I would have is to unlock your level. I know this is a series that you want to be played in a specific order but trust me when I say that you will have a lot less plays by leaving Part II locked and requiring people to play Part I first. I think you should just have a note in the level description encouraging the player to play the levels in order and then leave it up to them.

Needless to say, 5 stars and hearted! The LoTR series is in good hands and I am excited when I think about how you could implement orcs, Ents, Balrogs, Nazguls etc into the next couple of parts to the series. Amazing work once again from one of my favorite creators. Everyone needs to check out this series ASAP!

You really nailed the shire house design... for once there's a reason why everything's so green, and I like how part 1 was like a segueway intro to this. I always like the intro screens that you, and OCK (and others) do.

Gandalf looks awesome. Now that's what I'm sayin. I'm always trying to tell people to make their characters more detailed, and you definitely did. Ever since your Pyramid level I've noticed your talent for etching and shaping, and I gotta say - I have an oxdrawn cart going for a level project of mine and while the Ox is better, the cart definitely doesn't look as good as yours. You're makin' me step my game up heh

Same with the house... I'm also doing a similar thing, and you gave me some good inspiration here for how to make it more interactive. I'm gonna invite you and show you what I mean next time we're both on.

The electric fence, and mountain part is a little steep in challenge the first time... I'd recommend double life checkpoints there. I got through on my last life every time, just barely. The MGS music is oddly fitting here lol

Wow, nice rainbow light here when Sam comes back up with the ring.

...man, this raft segment looks amazing.

Surprisingly, this was a pretty long level, and if you keep them coming, I'll keep playing.

So after playing the first level I took it upon myself to try the second part of your series...and loved it

As Ninja stated, the shire and Gandalf look amazing! You really pulled it off man

You did fine work moving the ring around flawlessly, and I had absolutely no issues and no snags in doing so. I was worried it was going to get tiresome lugging it around, but to my surprise it was completely user-friendly. I usually hate dragging things around in order to proceed from section to section but you did it in such a smooth manner. Great work!

The platforming was fun, and I'd have to disagree with Ninja when he says you need an extra checkpoint in that one section. Level still needs a degree of challenge to it, and that part has the most, so don't pamper it up

Not much else to say! Just a really good and solid level again Takelow Keep em coming!

PS: You left out Tom Bombadil! I assume you've seen the movies and not read the book? Or maybe you didn't think he was important haha oh well Only so much you can put into a level.

Hi,

Thank you all a lot for your kind words, comments and suggests. I really appreciate it.

The whole carriage ride with Gandalf was one of the most enjoyable moments for me. The wizard looks just as he should and I liked the way he spoke to you throughout the ride.

You are a little bit too shy here OCK! YOU are the one responsible for this. Your suggest was GREAT and i'm really happy with the result
Thank you a lot.

- It was literally impossible for me to take the ring off the raft without it moving back in the other direction and thus not giving me enough time to reach the other side with the ring. Because of this problem I was unable to finish the level. Please tweak your switch radiuses here.

I fixed this. There is no problem anymore to finish the level.

Yeah....
I must think about this...
Actually, i unlocked the level as soon as i saw your suggest. It is unlocked yet, but i loved the concept of playing levels in the good order. It is a global concept as the gameplay will evoluate progressively...

I would be interested to have other members opinion about this point. Please tell me what you think.

Needless to say, 5 stars and hearted! Thank you
You will see Nazguls very soon. And orcs and the Balrog, just a little bit time later. I keep for each level its surprises

I always like the intro screens that you, and OCK (and others) do.

Thank You. The screen tittle will be a common point for all my levels of the series. But i project some little surprises about this...

I have an oxdrawn cart going for a level project of mine and while the Ox is better, the cart definitely doesn't look as good as yours.

So, give me your OX, i will give you my cart!!
Seriously, you can win the Gandalf and is ox cart in my level. Take a look to the object construction

Same with the house... I'm also doing a similar thing, and you gave me some good inspiration here for how to make it more interactive. I'm gonna invite you and show you what I mean next time we're both on.

I'm proud that my level inspired you! Moreover, i accept with joy your proposal to take a look to your project.

Surprisingly, this was a pretty long level, and if you keep them coming, I'll keep playing.

Be sure that i will keep them coming. I will take my time for these levels but i really projected to complete the whole series!

Great work!

This is a very important comment for me. As stated in the tittle ("The Bearer", the main concept of the series is that you need the ring in order to progress. Puzzles will be more and more complex level after level. But giving a smooth gameplay was my main concern with these levels

PS: You left out Tom Bombadil! I assume you've seen the movies and not read the book? Or maybe you didn't think he was important

Actually, i read this incredible book many times and i found the movies was perfect too... However, there is so much to show in LOTR that it is stunning!
Concerning Tom Bombaldi, i think it is definitely an important character. However, who can say me what is the look of Bombaldi? I could have created a character from the book description, but it would not be reminiscent of LOTR for the most part of the players (i think). So, i thought that it could distract most of the players. So, i choose to not show him, as in the movies. My main purpose in this level was to show the Shire, where the story start and finish (i can't wait to create the last level... my ideas are here to do a mirror level with the Part I : Incipit...but shuuut...i keep these secrets a little bit longer , to represent the way until Pancing Poney and finally to introduce the concept of "the bearer" gameplay.

Finally, since i am working on Part III, i can tell that the next levels will be called "The Bearer - Part III : The Fellowship" (the ones that finished Part II already know that!)... But a lot of work remains until i publish it...

Once again, incredible work throughout. It looks amazing, and there a ton of great gameplay ideas being implemented.

I did have a lot of problems in my play-through, in fact I still haven't been able to finish it (I'll try again in a minute). I'd take a close look at checkpoint placing - I don't know exactly where or how this happened, but a few times I died and was sent way... waaay back. I think it might have to do with the fact that there are some multi-path areas?

You know when you jump down to the area where gandalf appears? Well, half the time, even if I land square on the green grass, I get electrocuted. For some reason, a bit of that electric floor is peeking through the green cloth at certain points.

I fell off Gandalf's carriage and got electrocuted - by the time I ran back to jump back on, he was well on his way over the bridge and I had to restart. He didn't seem to notice that I had fallen to my death, as he kept talking to me. He IS an old, old man though.

Finally, the section after the mountain climbing, where Sam shows up with the ring.
He showed up... but he didn't have the ring! I don't know where it went. I went down, looked all over the place, it was mysteriously missing. That was my last playthrough, so I still haven't finished. I'm off to do that now, but I just wanted to let you know what I had run into. It's a great level though, just keep polishing.

One last thing, and you don't need to prioritize this, but the dialogue throughout has a lot of grammar errors. Normally I don't mind, but as this is a literary adaptation, you might want to comb through these and spruce them up a bit.

EDIT: On that last point, if it's a language barrier issue, just let us know and we'd be happy to help you out with dialogue and grammer polishing!

I just played through it again and noticed what I missed at the Sam part, that there was a little nook that the ring needed to go into. I'd work on making that really clear (like a sign or something), and also implementing a foolproof so that just in case someone screws it up, they can get another shot at it without restarting.

The raft section was just gorgeous. You've squeezed a LOT of great visuals out of this thing. The scope of this series is great too, I love that we're already at the Prancing Pony and have met Strider. Can't wait for the next installments.

Ok, I have to say you have a real eye for detail! You really do know how to capture the essence of LOTR.

I loved part I and this one is great too, although I found a few issues:

On my play through I had the following issues:

- Leaving the ring with Sam before the mountain. After I removed the electric barriers from the corn field (where I have to leave the ring), I went back and got the ring, but when I got to Sam there was already a ring there! So I had two rings! I couldn't place my ring in the trench because another ring was already there. At the top of the mountain, the lift came up with a ring, but the ring didn't activate the dissolving door so I was stuck and had to restart the level! Second time through I realised I needed to have both rings in front of Sam.

- Some of the speech bubbles can activate at the wrong time, or after a player has already done what they say (The one as you leave the shire telling you to use a switch to remove a barrier, I got to the switch and pulled it before the speech bubble. Also, at the top of the mountain I dropped off a cloud too early but the lethal gas didn't kill me, I landed next to a switch for Sam's lift and pulled it before the speech bubble told me to)

- I know your thermo is probably full, but I would have loved to see a ring wraith/nazgul appear just as you get on the raft - it doesn't need to be a proper enemy or harm sackboy (although this would be great) but just to add some tension to the raft part.

- Some grammatical errors, if you need any help on this I'm sure anyone here (including me) would be willing to help with this.

Hi,

I would like to thank you a lot about yours great feedbacks!

You know when you jump down to the area where gandalf appears? Well, half the time, even if I land square on the green grass, I get electrocuted. For some reason, a bit of that electric floor is peeking through the green cloth at certain points.

Yeah, i have seen that.... I don't understand what happened here since there is a grass layer over the electrified ground in this area. Nevertheless, i made a new update and added here a one more layer of grass. There is not any problem anymore. Thank you for the feedback

I fell off Gandalf's carriage and got electrocuted - by the time I ran back to jump back on, he was well on his way over the bridge and I had to restart. He didn't seem to notice that I had fallen to my death, as he kept talking to me. He IS an old, old man though.

LOl...yes...old, old man.
Actually, there is a checkpoint in the gandalf car. You MUST activate it as soon as possible when you meet gandalf. This way, if you die, you respawn in the car and can continue your travel. I will add a bubble text for that in the next update

Finally, the section after the mountain climbing, where Sam shows up with the ring.
He showed up... but he didn't have the ring! I don't know where it went. I went down, looked all over the place, it was mysteriously missing. That was my last playthrough, so I still haven't finished.

Oh, i don't understand what happened here, but i think that the ring was on the left of the elevator and broke during coming up. I have make changes in this area in the last update. I added a bubble speech, a trench to put the ring in it and a light that "must be turn on before leaving the ring". I hope it would be sufficiant.

Yeah...actually, it is a language barrier issue. I must take the time to correct this. Help would GREATLY appreciated here. If i copy in this thread the exact sentences of the gandalf dialog, is somebody agree to correct them?

EDIT:
I copy in SPOILER the gandalf's speeches during the car travel. I think i have identified and corrected some errors but i am not sure and others can remains. If someone could take a look, it will be greatly appreciated

-"Hi Frodo, (FRODO???). It's been a long time!! Come on and travel with me."
-"Did you found bilbo normal these last times?"
-"Frodo, i must say you that he leaved the Shire...He left something for you in his house"
-"You can continue alone now. I will find you soon."

The raft section was just gorgeous. You've squeezed a LOT of great visuals out of this thing. The scope of this series is great too, I love that we're already at the Prancing Pony and have met Strider. Can't wait for the next installments.

Thank you a lot

OMG, what a shame... Actually, when i have done the last update (just after Teebonesy comments), i tried the elevator new system with a supplementary ring in create mode. I just forgot to delete it before republishing it.... I have corrected this in deleting the supplemental and undesired ring. Thank you a lot

Some of the speech bubbles can activate at the wrong time,
I didn't had the time to fix that in the last update but i will in the next.

I must admit that you are perfectly right. Actually, my initial tou?hgt was to show the Nazguls exactly in this section. But, as you stated, the thermo is near to be full and i could'nt do something that was satsfying myself in these conditions. So, I prefered don't show them here. But i promise you will see the Nazgul very soon...

- Some grammatical errors, if you need any help on this I'm sure anyone here (including me) would be willing to help with this.

Here are some possibilities for rewrites on Gandalf's dialogue.

Frodo?? Is that you? Hm, it's been a long time. Why don't you come with me for a while?

I've been wanting to talk to you about Bilbo. Have you noticed anything strange about him lately?

Frodo, I'm afraid Bilbo had to leave the Shire. He left you Bag End. And one other possession...

-"You can continue alone now. I will find you soon." (Nothing needs changing on this one!)

Hopefully these fit into the short dialogue bubbles the game provides you with! Anytime you want help with this stuff, just post a message and I'll be happy to help!

Ok so i know nothing about lord of the rings but played your pyramid level and really liked it so gave this a shot.

The first lord of the rings level deserves 3 stars max in my opinion but this one is so much better.

Visuals are really good

But it might look slightly better if the edges on the title were round ish instead of a perfect rectangle.. but thats waaay too picky

Sound was very good as well

Right music at the right time

I cant say anything about the story as i know nothing about lord of the rings

Oh and one problem i had was with the layers.. the part with the ring in the fireplace in that house is annoying. Everytime i jumped onto the chandelier i fell through instead of landing on it.

Overall very good level. 4 stars (4 and half if possible)

Could you please give me some suggestions on my level?

Hi

The first lord of the rings level deserves 3 stars max in my opinion

I respect that. But it seems that your opinion is differents that the majority of players. The first level is rated 4 stars, with an heart ratio of 1/5. I have a lot of great comments on it.
I think the differences come from that you don't know the LotR story (btw, how is it possible????). People that know the story travels in known environment (Rohan, Moria's mines, Fondcombe, the Mordor...all these places are mythicals in LotR whole story) and seems to love that!

But it might look slightly better if the edges on the title were round ish instead of a perfect rectangle.. but thats waaay too picky

Hm...dou you want i also change the tittle? :hero:
Seriously, I will not change the perfect rectangle. I love my title screens a lot, and most of players seems to love it so.

Oh and one problem i had was with the layers.. the part with the ring in the fireplace in that house is annoying. Everytime i jumped onto the chandelier i fell through instead of landing on it.

In my opinion, it is quite simple to access the chandelar lever (even when your skills are as weak as mines in plateforming! LOL)......

Thank you a lot for your comments
I will take a look to your level and will come back with some comments. I just ask you to be a little patient

Takelow, let me say that you are an inspiration when it comes to artwork. Your levels are definitely amongst the most beautiful of any published. I loved part one. I got stuck in Bilbo's house on this one but I will be back to get through it. Keep up the great work!2009-01-24 08:22:00

Hi Jayden,

Thank you a lot for your kind words

I hope you will not be stuck again in Bilbo's house. Don't froget that i absolutely love using the lights in my level, it could be very helpful in this room to find the way out of the house...
I will certainly add some clues here for the next update.

EDIT: I have made an UPDATE with fixing most of the grammatical errors (i hope!!!)
I would like to gratefully thanks Ccubbage and Teebonesy for taking the time to correct my speech bubbles.

Another beautifully designed level! And a Lord of the Rings tribute as well! As a big fan of the movies and the books, this was a delight to play.

The good stuff:
- Aesthetics-wise, it was beautiful to look at. From the hobbit homes to all the flora decorating the place, you were able to capture the simple, serene beauty of the Shire from the movies. Bilbo's house looked wonderful, and the mountainous areas looked as dangerous as they were challenging. Your use of lighting was also amazing!
- Your choice of music was great, because they fit the level. The music you used in the village was spot-on. In some ways, it even sounds like the hobbit theme from the movie.
- Gandalf was awesome!
- Secrets and alternate paths!

Stuff that need improvement:
- Well, the Shire looked great and all, but I thought it was rather devoid of hobbits or any other form of life aside from the flora. Perhaps a hobbit or two, or some birds or squirrels in the trees would make the place look truly more "alive". I understand how this might be a problem for you though; I'm sure your temperature is high enough as it is!
- After the portion where you have to swing from the clouds, Sam came up on a platform. But the ring wasn't with him! I got stuck at this point. This happened to me on my first playthrough.

Aside from a few bugs and some minor issues, I thought this level was very well-made. I'll be waiting eagerly for the next installment in the series!

It is true that my temperature is the highest possible, but i must admit you totally right. I would like to add more life in the Shire. There is already the blue fishes in the lake, but i will try to improve this part. Thank you for the comment and the suggests.

Oh ....! I had this problem with the first published version of the level but after some corrections, it was not an issue (not any comments about this point). And the same day, two comment about this (i have one on the level comments)... I must check this absolutely...
Have you placed the Ring in the trench (light on) as mentionned in the text bubbles before climbing the moutain?

I played your In the belly of the beast level last night and found it very IMPRESSIVE. I will write soon some more thoughts on the thread .

Alright, here's my feedback Takelow!

Things going through my head

-I love your text, it really fits in with the Lord of the Rings theme. Excellent job.

-Like others have said, I will say it too. You are truly a master at lighting, it really gives life to your levels.

-I love the houses, and the vines you have, you have a great eye for detail.

The Positive

-Like I said, I love the detail in this level, from the vines to all the houses ( I'm sorry I've never watched Lord of The Rings so I don't know if those houses have a name. Seriously, it's wonderful!

-The music fits really well with the section your currently on, which is good.

-Ah! A sticker switch, good job. I love to see levels that encourage the use of them, and it will definately pay off as your level will receive more replay value.

-Woah! That... Is... Amazing... Who's that suppose to be? Gandalf or something? I don't know but it's amazing, the horse, the carriage, everything so far is spectacular!

-Haha, again... Your music is awesome, I love Bilbo's house hahahaha.

-Your hints, wonderful, very informative yet subtle so it doesn't give out too much. "Hmm..."

-No idea what section this is, corn field maybe? I dunno but again, your lighting is always superb!

-I love how you can implement such a strong story, and still have fresh new platforming. Bravo!

Suggestions/Feedback

-Ok first off, right at the start, when I first entered the level, I walked to the left, invisible wall, to the right, invisible wall. So I thought I might have to play the first level in order to keep going, which I later found out was wrong, all you have to do is jump down. Lol. My suggestion to this would be to edit your speech bubble to say "Now jump down to continue the story!" Because some idiots (like me ) won't understand that all they have to do is jump down. Easy fix.

-I found a few spelling mistakes, now I know your english isn't all that great, and it's really good for not being your native tongue, but you should double check everything to make sure it's right, I remember seeing one bubble that was suppose to say the word "other" but it was missing an r, now I don't know if you ran out of room (didn't seem like it) but I would suggest checking all your levels, because spelling does have an impact on you and your level!

Overall

I don't have that much suggestions/feedback, I would only suggest that you double check and maybe even triple check (Yes I am that serious about spelling) your grammar/spelling and all that good stuff. It really makes an impact, especially on someone like me. O

Other than that, I had no issues with the level, it was a smooth fun ride. 5 Stars and Hearted!

Hi Whaaaaale,

First of all, thank you a lot for your great review. I really appreciate your attention to details and your kind words.

-I love your text, it really fits in with the Lord of the Rings theme. Excellent job.

Thank you. I project to offer the complete alphabet to the player in future levels of the series.

I'm sorry I've never watched Lord of The Rings so I don't know if those houses have a name.
I didn't think that some people on heart never watched them

Woah! That... Is... Amazing... Who's that suppose to be? Gandalf or something? I don't know but it's amazing, the horse, the carriage, everything so far is spectacular!

Yes, it is Gandalf. This section is a direct reference to one of the firsts scene of the movie "The Fellowship of The Ring".

No idea what section this is, corn field maybe? I dunno but again, your lighting is always superb!

You have perfect eyes whaaaales, it is exactly a corn field. You are the first talking to me about this, and i am happy because i particularly love this section of the level. Here again, it is a direct reference to the book/movie scene.

You perfectly right here. I will fix this.

No, the "othe" for "other" is a mistake. I must correct this.

Glad to read that! Thank you

Once again, I loved the atmosphere and detail, so :star::star::star::star:. Unfortunately, I could not get past the electric fence in the corn field. I found this to be the only problem with the level. I especially loved Gandalf!2009-08-04 22:54:00
