2012 - Year in review

Archive: 23 posts

I know it's not December yet, but I'm going to start a topic about how 2012 went. You can talk about anything that happened this year. This includes:

1. Anything recorded in the news in 2012 (i.e. the chick-fil-a flap or the solar flares)

2. Video games in 2012

3. Movies and TV shows in 2012

4. Little Big Planet in 2012 (i.e. Update 1.12 or changes in Mm Picks)

5. What you think of 2012

2012 was a great year for me. I got to travel through Europe, show some British kids around America and become good friends with them, watch Wreck-it-Ralph, Frankenweenie, Brave, and Paranorman, play LittleBigPlanet Vita, visit family in Guatemala, and get a 31 on my ACT.

In other words, it's a good year to die.

Gaming-wise, 2012 was a little crappy in comparison to 2011. Especially since Mass Effect 3 was a piece of **** and Sly Cooper, The Last of Us, MGS Rising and Bioshock Infinite were all delayed to 2013.

But 2012 is kind of redeeming itself in these last two months, with LBPV, Borderlands 2, Dishonored, AC3, Hitman, Far Cry 3... But when you compare these games to last year's GOTY candidates, it's a little bit underwhelming.

YOU DON'T KNOW THAT, IT COULD STILL BE THE END OF DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYS.

In a slightly more serious note, I had my greatest achievement ever: A very disfunctional version of Monopoly in java.
System.out.println("-------------");
for (int space = 0; space < 5; space++){
System.out.println();
}
System.out.println ("Turn " + turn);
System.out.println ("(Commands: Roll = Roll dice (default, starts next turn.); Board = View the board; Prop = View your properties)");
System.out.println ();
System.out.println ("Player1 - " + playerone);
System.out.println ("$" + playerm [0]);
System.out.println ("Space: " + board1 [player1]);
command = read.nextLine ();
command = command.toUpperCase ();

board2 = 0;

if (command.equals ("PROP"))
{
rindex = 3;
while (board2 < 40 && command.equals ("PROP"))
{
//1-----------------------
while (PROPERTY [board2] [0] [0] [1] == 1)
{
System.out.println (board1 [board2] + " owned. Rent value = $" + PROPERTY [board2] [3] [0] [0]);
board2++;
}

System.out.print ("Current space: " + board1 [player1] + ". ");
System.out.print (" Next Command: ");
command = read.nextLine ();
command = command.toUpperCase ();
}
}
if (command.equals ("BOARD"))
{
board ();
System.out.print ("Current space: " + board1 [player1] + ". ");
System.out.print (" Next Command: ");
command = read.nextLine ();
command = command.toUpperCase ();
}

if (command.equals ("ROLL"))
{

move = dice.nextInt (12) + 2;
player1 = player1 + move;

System.out.println (" _________");
System.out.println (" | ");
System.out.println (" | ");
System.out.println (" | ________");
System.out.println (" | | |");
System.out.println (" | " + move + " |");
System.out.println (" | |");
System.out.println (" |________|");

if (player1 > 40)
player1 = player1 - 40;
System.out.println ("Landed at " + board1 [player1]);

prindex = player1;
if (PROPERTY [prindex] [0] [0] [0] == 0 && player1 == prindex && player1 != 2 && player1 != 4 && player1 != 7 && player1 != 10 && player1 != 17 && player1 != 20 && player1 != 22 && player1 != 30 && player1 != 33 && player1 != 36 && player1 != 38)
{
System.out.print ("Purchase property?: ");
buy = read.nextLine ();
buy = buy.toUpperCase ();
if (buy.equals ("YES") || buy.equals ("Y"))
{
playerm [0] = playerm [0] - PROPERTY [prindex] [cindex] [0] [0];
PROPERTY [prindex] [0] [0] [0] = 1;
PROPERTY [prindex] [0] [0] [1] = 1;
PROPERTY [prindex] [0] [2] [1] = 1;
System.out.println ("Property Purchased.");
}
}

Also Dishonored, Halo 4, Borderlands 2, and my first time on the Honour roll, so that's coo.

Movie-wise, this year has been amazing for me. I've went and seen The Avengers, TDKR, Skyfall, The Hunger Games and the Amazing Spiderman, which all were great movies imo. The only really 'meh' movie would've been Prometheus.

As for video games, it's been pretty barren. I've still picked up a ton of great games, it's just that there were barely any from this year. 2011 was games rocked my world with Arkham City, Portal 2, Rayman Origins, etc. while the only 2012 game I've bought that was truly new (a.k.a. not HD collections) would be Journey. (Although when I eventually get a 3DS, Kid Icarus: Uprising would also be included.)

Nonetheless, 2013 looks fantastic for me. I eagerly await games like Sly 4, Ni No Kuni, Pikmin 3, Rayman Legends, and Puppeteer.

Same for me. I'd also add Infamous 2, Deus Ex, Dark Souls, and The Witcher 2. I think Skyrim was kinda meh, but it was a great game and lots of people loved it. Now look at 2012's games. They don't even stand a chance.

You forgot Dmc: Devil May Cry, South Park:The Stick of Truth, and Aliens:Colonel Marshals.

Oh wow, totally forgot about Infamous 2. (and LBP2, of course)

Deus Ex and Dark Souls both look like great games, which I might have to pick up myself.

So far, nobody shared their experience on LBP2 from this year.

In my personal opinion, 2011 was much better than 2012. What did I do this year besides join LBPC? I did nothing special. I was stuck in a poor-conditioned rental home through the majority of the year. There were no vacations, my family was unusually busy this year, I was housebound for many days (not many days in a row however), and I faced increasing levels of boredom when playing LBP2 (which is why I quit LBP). The number one thing I was dependent on is that my new house finishes construction. It should've been finished by June or August, but instead, it will be done by early December.

Not only that, but even news reports from 2011 were more interesting than the news reports in 2012. It was nice, hearing about stories where two major terrorists and two dictators were reported dead. I know some broadcasts from 2011 are upsetting to most of us, but what news reports did I find to be interesting to read about in 2012? Just two major events, compared to six major events in 2011 that I was interested into reading.

Movies aren't really my thing, so I don't enjoy going out to a movie theater. I only seen three movies in theaters this year.

Whoever talked about video games on this thread, I saw your point of view. There are some games I hope to see come out in 2012, but they were delayed to 2013. And the games that came out prior to 2012 are better. However, if you think 2011 in gaming is better, what about LBPV and LBPK?

The only thing that was completely better in 2012 than in 2011 was South Park. Season 16 (2012) is better than Season 15 (2011). While 16 is closer to the top three in my favorite seasons, 15 is closer to the bottom three from all the seasons I've seen.

Because of how uninteresting 2012 is to me, I won't write a year in review document like I did in 2011.

I think a major contributor to this is all the election madness we've had, sort of fizzling all our brains after having to deal with conspiracies after conspiracies and annoying ads after annoying ads. It was irritating, to say the least.

Yeah, a lot people don't like talking about politics, but I can go over what happened each year (6 things each):

2012:

1. Cruise Crash
2. Murder of Trayvon Martin
3. Upholding of Obamacare
4. Chick-fil-a CEO makes his opinions
5. Disney buys Star Wars
6. Obama wins re-election

2011:

1. Invasion of Libya
2. Japanese Earthquake and Tsunami
3. Osama bin Laden gets killed
4. Casey Anthony Trial
5. Occupy Wall Street
6. Penn State Scandal

Out of the two sets of events, which year had the more interesting events? 2011 had more events that I could obsess about.

Nothing really caught my eye on this news this year in 2012. Maybe the Jerry Sandusky Scandal, Hurricane Sandy, Disney buying Star Wars, and Hostess going out of business.

Viddeeeooo Games... I don't really get alot. I got LBPVita, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. HOWEVER, Halo 4, Black Ops 2, Skyrim (does that count?), Borderlands 2, AC3, were all key games to me this year.

I really think 2012 had the best movie year. evar.

1. The Avengers
2. Hunger Games
3. Batman: The Dark Knight Rises <------ YESSSSSSS
4. Wreck-It Ralph
5. Skyfall 007
6. TWILIGHT

EDIT: Brave was good aswell. Pixar pulls another great movie!

Those are the movies I could name off the top of my head. And no, I don't like Twilight, but I was forced to see it.

TV Shows. UGH.

Television 2012 sucked. Bad. Nickelodeon has COMPLETELY gone downhill... and Cartoon Network is just bad. What happened to Chowder and Flapjack? Now we have Ben 10 Alien Force and some weird show about a guy who turns into a dragon. The only good things I've seen are Regular Show (eh), Adventure Time (Probably the best on CN at this rate) and Gravity Falls.

I didn't play much LBP this year; I've kind of given up on creating and have gotten bored of LBP2. I think the community is wonderful in Stevenl's hands, though., he does a much better job then what we've had in the past. I think LBPVita was amazing, but doesn't have the biggest community. If it had LBP2's, it could have the potential to be a better game. LBPKarting was not that great; and I really expected more. I went to the store today (dont go on Black Friday. just dont.) and debated: LBPKarting or PlayStation All-Star Battle Royale; and I ended up choosing PSASBR instead because of the poor performance I saw in the Beta. I hope MM does a good job on Tearaway, though.

2012 for me was great.

I did baseball and track, got to go to Las Vegas, San Francisco, and a ton of other places, and plan to go on a holiday cruise during Christmas. It was an exciting year!

It didn't suck for people who watch Game of Thrones, Sherlock, Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, Sherlock, Downtown Abbey, BoardWalk Empire, and Sherlock. For those people, 2012 was amazing.

Maybe it sucked if you're referring to cartoons... but from what I hear, Legend of Korra was great.

2012 was kinda sucky for me. I had bladder... issues... for like half of the year.

Didn't pick up any new games either.

Movies? Only 2012 ones I really remember watching was The Avengers, and The Dictator. Mostly watched a couple old movies, like Robocop or Dead Poets Society.

TV? Didn't have as much spare time as I'd have liked this year, so I spent most of it on the internet or on LBP2.

LBP? It was... alright, I guess. Two LBPC Spotlight Nods, buncha new levels and friends were all good, but quite a few of my projects died. Oh, and two or three of my friends seem to have left LBP and/or PSN.

It was nice, hearing about stories where two major terrorists and two dictators were reported dead.

Wait, what?

Nothing really caught my eye on this news this year in 2012. Maybe the Jerry Sandusky Scandal, Hurricane Sandy, Disney buying Star Wars, and Hostess going out of business.

Out of all four of these events, three of them were in 2012. It's pretty interesting that the ones that were in 2012 are nearly synchronized in chronological order. They were in the news in November.

It's also strange that for the past three years (first three years from 2010 to 2019), there was a natural disaster society hung onto the subject of for the year and talked about helping out people.

2012 - Hurricane Sandy
2011 - Japanese Earthquake and Tsunami
2010 - Hatian Earthquake

I usually don't care about video games or TV shows. I only watch very few shows and play very few games.

GAMES: Because I was so busy with art projects, homework, LBP2, and "Skyrim", I only play two new games this year (well...at least for now. I'll be getting more late this year). "Kid Icarus: Uprising" is the best 3DS game I have ever played so far, while LBPK is awesome. Can't wait for the Vita and Wii U games, plus some PS3 and 3DS games.

NEWS: The best news of 2012 is definitely Disney buying Lucasfilms. Since Disney treated Marvel really well and gave us such success as "The Avengers", I like to see how will the Mickey Mouse company do in Star Wars. With the writers of "Toy Story 3" and "Empire Strikes Back" working on the story, can't wait for Episode VII.

MOVIES: "Avengers" is the best movie of 2012. I haven't watch any other movies yet, but I'll be sure to get a good look at them on Blu-ray.

TV: 2012 is a much better year for animated programs. With the premiere of Nickelodeon's "The Legend of Korra" and Disney Channel/Disney XD's "Gravity Falls", "Motorcity", and "Tron: Uprising", this is the first good year of animated show premieres in years. As in Cartoon Network, it's been improving now that the 20th anniversary brings back memories of classic 90s to early 2000s cartoons, Adult Swim brought back Toonami, "Adventure Time" and "Regular Show" continues to do well, and there's even less live-action shows. The only flaw in CN is the airing of "Annoying Orange", the cancellation of "Thundercats", and the hiatus of DC nation. The primetime comedy that still delivers laughs are "Last Man Standing", "The Middle", "Modern Family", and "The Big Bang Theory". Best show in 2012...."THE LEGEND OF KORRA".

LBP2 experience: One of the best experience I ever accomplished in LBP2 is save the best for last in "Cybernetic Adventures" level series by publishing the Omega series. One of my new levels of 2012, "Timeshift Ruins", did a great job. But my LBPC8 level failed, despite the honorable mentions in both LBPC spotlight and contest. The gallery level of mine did alright as well. The best LBP2 moment is that I got invited to LBPK GameJam, because I'm a super creator .

1. Anything recorded in the news in 2012
-Libertarian movement with Ron Paul and Gary Johnson
-Hurricane Sandy
-Drought
-Green energy business failures
-Amanda Todd

2. Video games in 2012
-Awesome year
-PS Vita
-LittleBigPlanet Vita and LittleBigPlanet Karting = awesome
-Great expectations for 2013
-HD collections
-Pokemon Conquest and B2W2
-Max Payne 3
-Journey

3. Movies and TV shows in 2012
-South Park had a really good season.
-I don't really watch anything else.

4. Little Big Planet in 2012
-I've been working on lots of cool levels this year. I'm very proud of my level, Candy Island and the Dentist. I sadly only managed to upload three and didn't finish any others. I'm hoping to get one more uploaded by the end of the year.
-LittleBigPlanet Karting is going great for me. I've done two tracks and an arena. The 3D tools allow me to create vivid environments. I'm hoping my track, Future Frenzy, gets team picked.
-I loved the Muppets DLC.
-I'm getting a Vita and LBPV for Christmas.
-The community levels have been very unique this year. I like how people are transitioning to creating more creative levels and how some are managing to pull off realism very well.
-We need a new level kit. Or even the Vita pack Mm owes us!

5. What you think of 2012
-One of the best years of my life.
-Started composing music.
-I am more spiritually awake.
-I went to the NJCL convention; it was lots of fun.
-America's becoming a police state
-I'd hate for the world to end on 12/21. If something does happen on 12/21, I highly doubt it will be catastrophic.

Thankyou, Sev! Took the words right out of my mouth! To add to those you have Homeland, Dexter (a return to form this year IMO), Mad Men, Person of Interest, Awake. BTW, did you mean to mention Sherlock 3 times? Is it that good? I still haven't actually watched it yet.

Hmmm, this year my beloved Bolton Wanderers were relegated from the Premier League for the first time in about 10 years, so that was a downer.

2012 was a fantastic year for British sport. Our team did fantastic in both the Olympics and the Para-olympics, with the track cycling being a particular highlight. Also, we finally have a tennis Grand Slam winner for the first time in 70-odd years.

In terms of gaming, I think it's been a poor year. A few good games like Borderlands 2, Sleeping Dogs, Dishonoured (which I'm yet to play), but nothing really groundbreaking. I have higher hopes for 2013 though.

In terms of LBP2, I've been working on a level since March.... so that's pretty much most of my 2012 gone right there. It is close to being complete though (relatively speaking).

In other news, one of the biggest stories in the UK this year is the story of Jimmy Savile. For those who don't know, he was a very popular TV entertainer pretty much all the way through the 60s/70s/80s, and remained popular until his death a year or so ago....... until this year when a rather unsavoury revelation came about. I won't detail it, I'll let you do your own research if you want to find out more.

Yep, it was intentional since I've watched it 3 times now. It's one of the best series I've ever watched. Excellent acting, superbly written, beautifully shot... Each season has only 3 episodes, but they're one and a half hour long and the quality standards are ridiculously high, so they might as well be short movies.

Go watch it now. GO!
