SPS - Sack Positioning System & Laser Tracking.

Archive: 37 posts

Alright, well I've developed a device that once you pass it, it follows you. (Vertically and horizontally).

It's quite simple.. surprised I haven't seen it being used as an obstacle or some kind of boss..

if enough people want it I'll publish a level giving it away.

^^

YouTube - LittleBigPlanet - SPS: Sack Positioning System

NOT SHOWN IN VIDEO

Laser Tracking, so you walk into the laser and it begins to follow you. Done. :O

I HAVE PUBLISHED A LEVEL WITH BOTH, SO CHECK IT OUT.

I think I can guess how you made it, 2 prox switch to co0ntrol x and y axis?

I'd like to see how you made it stop jiggling when your right on edge of proximity :o

Might try that myself if I get the time, very cool.

Would adding extra pistons and switches make it jiggle about less though?

It doesnt jiggle D:

unless you're talking about when it's moving and it turns slightly.

But ya, adding some more pistons would probably help.

Yeah, that's what I meant d:
Probably should have been a bit clearer with that, sorry!

As a side note, playing this level with some friends makes for a awesome game!

Everyone on a jetpack, then slap each other into the SPS area so they have to run or be squished!

ask Elbee about it ;p

Cool!
I have actually seen something similar, have you played the day night example level? It uses the same kind of device, but only horizontally.

Last night, I re-vamped your design for personal use. It's now 1 thin layer only, it's got an auto-correction system (so it is more accurate), and it covers much more distance than the one in the video. Sadly, I published it locked (due to the distrust I have for the current save system), and since my PS3 is down, I don't have a way of unlocking it. 2009-01-20 02:42:00

Ya I made mine pretty fast, mostly for demonstration. I was going to make a thinner version for aer0blue's boss rush.

But I'm interested... Auto-correct?

Well, it's set up so if Sackboy is in the center of the + shape, the target will not be able to move in any direction. It's done by two more winches, one per 3-way switch. Each winch is connected to a piece of dark matter directly above the 3-way switch, and each has a length long enough to allow the 3-way switch to move freely if it is not activated. It will retract if Sackboy is in the center of the + shape (through a sensor switch set on "Directional"), pulling the 3-way switch to it's center position regardless of what the other winches are trying to do. These two winches I added are set to a higher strength than the other 4, so it forces the 3-way back into it's center position. This fixes a lot of the "jiggling" you see in the video, and it ensures it is a lot more accurate.

I actually designed something similar to this once only it could scale the entire level from bottom left corner to top right corner. I was going to attach a wheel to it that had sound notes on it and I was gonna make it spin around playing the super mario bros theme song but I never could get the tune down and I was also gonna release my creation so that everyone could add custom sound tracks into there maps but I didn't want to bother with it cuz I couldn't get my tune down. I was gonna use it to make a far superior super mario bros level.

Edit: Also this contraption made it to where the level had to be 2-D so it worked out great for my super mario bros level but not so great for other if they wanted to implement it. Another reason why I never released it.

But wouldn't screw up? Because one sensor tracks one player and the other tracks another but then it tries to go in 2 directions and it just breaks.. But other than that It's a really cool idea I want to make my own for a try.

You're right, it does get stuck a bit if there's more than one player, but it doesn't break. It either just goes back and forth, or doesn't move.

The trick to killing the other sacks is that when you see them fall you fly towards them so the SPS follows you and crushes them. ;p

If you search my PSN (Trap_T), I have the SPS published. All the switches are visible, so check it out if you want.

nice. It's been done many times before, and like Defaultsound said, somewhat hindered by multiplayer. A great example of it would be in physicslike's level for JSC1, which uses rockets =P2009-01-26 17:47:00

Was thinking some kinda boss or for an obstacle.

Could also be used for a checkpoint that follows you, so if you have a jetpack and die you'd start at the same place.

cool, u could also use it as an aiming system for your boss. u can make it so there are guns attached to the sliding ice blocks and make them shoot at the centre (where u are) from above and from the left. it'll make it so u have to keep moving and ajusting your aim

Played this the other night and really appreciated the complexity of it. If you can make this work for you in a level/boss then the results should be special. Really nice work and I look forward to you implementing this in a level.2009-02-07 12:20:00

I like the idea of a thin version. I'm making a level where I want a certain set of sounds to be ubiquitous, so I may need this.

wow, if it's about tracking or following sackboy, i always see those 3-way switches with winches. Like the rotating spotlight that follows you i saw in a video. And i'm not that good to mess with that kind of complexity.2009-02-16 08:30:00
