Much thanks to TheAdipose for doing a video review for Tree Top Trouble

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwpQnrhfTh8

This is the first level I have published outside of a beta in 2.5 years so I am pretty excited to be back in the creator seat For those of you in the LBPK beta, you may remember my level Tree Top Tromp, well this is a sort of re-imagining of that level with all of the things that people asked to have added plus it is a bit longer since I had unlimited time to make it.

If you're super bored and stare at that picture for long enough then you might notice a bunch of bees in the background. I added a lot of bees that each follow their own spline which makes the level feel pretty alive. One of the biggest complaints I got from my beta level was that it didn't have enough moving, so I added the bees and also made it so that all of the flowers on the trees rotated back and forth. I had doubted the power of the new tools in LBPK but now that I have messed with the rotator (or whatever it is called) and the path follower, I am much, much more excited.

I wanted to mess around with an intro to see what it was like in LBPK and once I got the hang of it I had a very good time with that (the screens below have text with them, but the text isn't captured when you take a screenshot ). Remember that you can skip it by simply tapping "x" twice

Thanks for playing! I won't be able to play other levels and leave feedback until next week because of a busy schedule, but I will certainly return the favor for those of you who check out my level and request me to play yours!

Excellent! Your BETA level was my second favorite -after that ridiculously amazing lava track- track of all time, and I'm sure this is much better!

Lol, 25 laps? That must be interesting. Queued right away! I may return with my first EVAH Karting review!

LOL, that says 2.5 laps, but the font uses a very small '.' so it looks like 25 :-P

BTW, One other thing that I improved on since the beta is the AI. They still aren't 100%, but they are a lot better than they were in my beta level.

Thanks for checking out the level! I hope you enjoyed it

qued it up

And thank you as well

EDIT:

I certainly do not make a habit of double posting, but I wanted to say that I just added 6 new screens to the original post on this thread to give a much better idea of the scope of the level seeing as my original single screen barely showed anything.

I can only access the first few pics I uploaded onto karting.lbp.me for some reason, so I had to grab these by transferring them to my computer with a USB drive which is why it took me a bit longer to do.

Yeah, that was very original already, and this one's much improved. I just thought the 2.5 rounds was a bit weird, it ended so abruptly.

By the way, where do you get unlimited time? I'd like some of that.

@Plokster: I'm glad that you enjoyed the level. Thanks for checking it out and leaving feedback!

@Rogar: It's good to hear that you think it is an improvement over Tree Top Tromp. I like this one a lot more. I'm sorry that you don't like the 2.5 laps set up. I did that because the game was having a very hard time tracking laps when the finish line was where the race starts because of how the whole race uses custom track instead of regular track. Thanks for playing!

Thanks for checking out the level and taking the time to leave feedback! I'm glad that you like the bees because they are one of my favorite things about the level However, I must admit that they are objects created by UFG so I cannot take credit for how amazing they look. I'm sure you will see them popping up in future levels

I simply have to comment on this track! It was so original! Truly a breath of fresh air. It was part race and part adventure. I really liked it!! I do have one comment, though. I found it a little hard to differentiate between the road and the trees that you are in the middle of the road and should be avoided. I would recommend changing the color/material of either the road or tree obstacles to alleviate this problem. Very awesome track overall!!2012-11-19 04:44:00

Hey Poo!!

Played this yesterday and loved it. My nephew and I tore it up for a while on your track.

I loved the inertia I felt throughought this track.

I was always in the air it seemed.

The AI was lovely, never bothered me at any time and was fun to see them buzzing around the track.

Congratulations on the creator spotlight. You deserved one of those three years ago.

Rumor has it you have a vita.

Wow! What a treat! Thanks for all of the feedback!

I have republished the level and made some semi-major tweaks that were advised by Manlius and TheAdipose. It hurt to watch my plays disappear, but I think it was well worth it. Thanks you both so much for the feedback that has helped my level to improve!

@Manlius: First of all, a B-I-G thank you to you for bringing up the fact that the trees were hard to distinguish from the road. That is so obvious now, but I was so used to the level that it had never occurred to me. I was already working on an update, and that may have been the most important fix in the entire update. This is what it looks like now:

It makes me very happy that if felt so unique and adventurous to you! Thanks so much for playing and taking the time to leave feedback

@VelcroJonze: It's time for some nostalgia. It's been a long time since I have gotten feedback from you I do miss the old days with the PSP community. I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed the track. Perhaps the constant flying around was unknowingly inspired by how you always had me flying around in your PSP level

And yes, I have a Vita, and I even have a level that is probably 90 to 95% done, but it is a straight puzzle level that plays more like an app than a LBP level

@TheAdipose: WOW! It is such a treat to have the video made! It was so much fun to watch someone else play the level (since I still haven't seen anyone play it online) and to hear their thoughts about it, and I really appreciate the kind words you said about me! Thank you so much for taking the time to make the video and for choosing my level to make a review for!

Also, I appreciate your ideas for improving the level

Nice level. The level design is polished with neat material choices, and the flying bees around the track are a nice addition. The path has some intriguing ideas, especially the two paths at the beginning. But for some reason when I entered the worm tube in the first lap, I ended up getting stuck and move back to go unstuck. Other than that, good job.

I'm really happy to hear that you enjoyed the level and I appreciate that you took the time to leave feedback!

As for the worm section, just like with any jump, if you land while spinning and you aren't straight then that can cause you to get really messed up (this usually is worse if you run into a wall off of a bad spin). Unfortunately, in a curved surface like the worm is sort of acts like a wall if you are not straight so I am guessing that that is why you ended up getting stopped. I could be 100% wrong and you somehow got jammed in there, but I think that the only time I have gotten jammed in there was due to a bad landing.

Thanks for letting me know about your play though! Also, when will we be seeing a level from a game jammer such as yourself? :-D

Great level! I thought it had a really unique idea and it was pulled off very well. The tree branches in the track were a nice touch and I especially loved that little alternate "branch" at the beginning. I wish you'd put more of those in, I feel like a track with a bunch of branches going off as shortcuts would just be so much fun. I was kind of disappointed to see that was the only shortcut in the level, but that's not the end of the world. Still a great track. But next time, definitely be sure to put more shortcuts in!2012-11-26 05:21:00

@VintageOctopus: Thanks for checking the level out and leaving feedback (in-game and on here)! I'm glad that you enjoyed driving along tree branches and such

As for the multiple path request, this level took a lot of thermo and I just can't add anymore to it. The track may not seem like much more than a normal track when you look at it, but since the entire thing is made up of custom objects (plus all of the trees + flowers + tech to make flowers move), the thermo is maxed out. I had planned on terraforming the ground more below the level but I can't even do something as simple as that because of the thermo

I must say that your shortcut in The Majestic Milk Machine (where you push the button and the object is raised to reveal a jump pad etc...) is my favorite that I have seen yet (even including story levels) so I know that you know the importance of interesting path options. Unfortunately, it is much, much more difficult than usual with a level like Tree Top Trouble because simply making the track takes a lot of time. It's not just a matter of painting track or creating flat objects the player can go on , but instead involves roads that are not flat or are curving and they need to match up with the next piece. I know that your side path in Majestic milk machine was up above the track so I believe you understand this, but for the side path in Tree Top Trouble you have railing and many small twists and turns for each path and matching all of that up is much harder than a flat surface (matching up each piece of track with the next often required 2 or 3 custom objects to fill the gap and make everything match up fine, and along with that, everything needed to be angled perfectly).

Going in I realized that people probably wouldn't appreciate or understand what went into it, but I just wanted to mention it so that you could see why there was only one split in the track. It certainly wasn't because I didn't want more splits in the track

I really appreciate the feedback and I encourage you to keep the constructive criticism coming! I will certainly keep in mind that people prefer more splits in a track, and I will also probably stray away from levels that are made up of only custom track since it is such a thermo hog and it seems that a majority of players don't really even notice the custom track.

Looking back on it, that makes a lot of sense actually. I kind of forgot that you actually used the wood as the track... Yeah, I imagine that took up a TON of room on the level. That all makes sense, then!2012-11-26 15:51:00

Your feedback was still spot on though! My favorite part of the level is also the split in the track and I'm glad that you mentioned that you would like more of that 2012-11-26 16:12:00

Wait... lining up what with what? How does this thing work anyway? Is there an invisible road running through those pipes, or is it breadcrumbs, or what? Now I'm curious.

What I am referring to is how the track is made up of pieces of wooden track rather than a painted track which is what is most commonly done. Matching each piece of track up required a lot of work since each set of adjacent pieces needed a custom track and railing piece made and then they all needed to match up perfectly.

I hope that makes sense. Trust me, I know that creating in 3D is something that everyone is getting used to and I am blown away by what people are doing. I am certainly not trying to say I did something amazing here, I am just explaining why the thermo is high and how adding a second path is something that takes hours when it usually would literally take less than a minute if you are just painting a new branch of the track out like normal.
