In your opinion, what's the most ANNOYING thing about LBP?

Archive: 45 posts

I think anyone who's taken the time to sign up to this site absolutely loves LBP. But there are still some things about LBP that are sure to hack you off...

For me, it's got to be the "Heart for heart" mentality that has swept the community. I get "h4h" posted in my level comments ALL THE TIME, and I've even seen entire levels dedicated to letting people gain hearts, where people will leave their details in the comments and everyone will heart eachother... I get quite baffled when people leave comments saying "Heart my level and I'll heart yours back". If you like my level then heart it! If you don't like it, don't heart it! And I'm NEVER going to heart your level if you ask me to!

So, what is it for you guys? Trophy levels? Crappy Mario levels getting a bajillion plays? Patch 1.07? Whatever annoys you the most, list it here.

That LBP is more of an "experience" than a platformer. It's equal parts in the story, which works out well. But in user levels, it's usually very uninvolving.

That I have a horribly time finding user levels that don't suck.

That I'm still too scared to delve into the creation tools and actually make the ideas I've had.

The most annoying bug for me would have to be the "unable to connect to players" bug.2009-01-16 03:49:00

That I have a horribly time finding user levels that don't suck.

A tips is to search for Mms own psn profile: LittleXim
They have a great collection of good levels in their hearted pages, including all of the levels they have spotlighted on their blog and many others. In all they have about 4 pages of levels and about 95 % of them are really good.

Back to the topic:

The most annoying thing in LBP is definitely loosing hours of work because of one of all the random bugs...

I have to say I haven't really come accross any of the bugs brought about by 1.07 (touch wood), so the most annoying thing for me is how long it takes to undo in create mode. It gets really tedious after a while.2009-01-16 12:32:00

Most annoying thing for me is the "plz heart" and "h4h" comments definitely.
And the fact some of the best levels I've found tend to have next to no hearts or plays, and then they never make another level ever again.

What annoys me the most is that I can't work on my levels while I'm away from home :hero:

Other things that annoy me would be the brain-dead speech bubble censoring code and the new bugs that've appeared with the latest patches.

I'm not going to say h4h because that is a people problem and not the fault of the game itself.

My problems are:

More freedom with the camera in create mode
I don't want to resort to deleting/detaching front layers just so I can edit something behind them. I want full camera freedom, I don't see any reason why this can't be achieved. When the camera is swung round 180 degrees (so the TV screen would be behind the back layer), just have the background mirrored. When the camera is rotated 90 degress (so it is facing the direction sackboy runs) just fog out what the engine can't render - I don't need to see the full length of my level to edit what's directly in front of me.

Moving between layers when playing levels

I don't have an ideal solution for this, Mm did a good job of minimising this problem with good level design. It rears its ugly head a lot more in the user created levels though.

Glue problems

The main problem of LBP???

It is THE reason why i didn't sleep for several days...lol...
To be more serious, my main problem is the Thermometer! It ALWAYS limit my ideas.
So i started a series of levels...and the ideas are kept for the next level when the thermometer is too hot...

Not being able to save all of my objects, due to the profile limit. When I'm making a prototype of something, I like to save my progress after each step, or save a variety of different objects that I've made so I can re use it later.

Another thing that annoys me is not being able to sort my items in an efficient manner. We should be able to sort them by category, like the story level items. Its hard to try to find the item that you're looking for in one big list, and the sort functions don't work that well either.

Moderation is big, as is people sticking crap all over you, and lag is as well, but i would say what makes me really mad is how hard it is too slap sometimes. Someone online will be standing right by a hazard, and i try to, only if they deserve it, and they slap me instead lol2009-01-18 00:04:00

I'm going to agree with most of what's been said here.

The Profile full thing is unimaginably annoying. Wow.
The thermometer seems to be really touchy about certain things and not about others. It's ridiculous that we have to learn such silly tricks and techniques to fight it and keep it down. I really wish we had less of a limit for our levels.

I also get system crashes a lot while editing. I don't know what's causing this, but it's a real killer.

Yeah, that too^^^... I get that alot, and tempt fate to destroy my harddrive every time I have turn it off during the "do not turn off while this whatever is flashing" access sequence -

the whole having to be offline to create in peace thing sucks too. Can't rewind at a normal pace while logged on, and god forbid you'd disconnect and your rewind sends you back to your entry checkpoint and effectively disorienting you completely.

overzealous use of the paintinator, It seems people have forgotten how to kill things without it - I much preferred bosses where you had to jump on their weak points that one where you just had to stand off screen firing wildly until you hit something2009-01-19 13:45:00

THIS is why I don't look at level comments.

MM should BAN these in a comment:

heart for heart
heart 4 heart
i heart you you heart me

Also, The first level in the canyons. I don't even know where the prize bubbles are!

I can relate to that, I really don't care for the heart 4 heart mentality either... I have over 160 hearts on "The Battle Of Hoth" and I'm sitting at 99 hearts for "Pirates Vs Ninjas - ACT I" Its great to earn them but I don't care if people heart them at this point or not, the comments and small fanbase I've seemed to acquire is certainly enough to wanna make me keep building kick *** creations!

My other problem is, I really wish there was more room for levels... in the actual level, on your moon, in your saved creations... I have a hard drive... let me utilize that!

The H4H Mentality, for sure.

Another thing I cant stand is picking up "Some kind of Object" when browsing community levels. You jump into a quick play, run through a mediocre level and once you finish it you automatically accept three useless items, sometimes not even two components, and never titled appropriately...
I find myself having to go back into level editor and shuffling through piles and mounds of junk, tossing out what I don't want to keep...

There should be a confirmation window asking if you would like to keep or discard a picked up object. You could easily prompt it once you return to your pod, for example.

Edit: Oh, and definitely what Joey said about good levels not getting recognised. after a certain time passes a majority of great levels get lost between "New Levels" and "Most Hearted", never to be seen again.

God yes that toooooo! I am so anal about it now that when I get my picture taken I immediately stop and delete it from inventory and then proceed with the level. I need a shrink

^^

For me it's backgrounds and gluing as well.

Edit: And we should be able to make 1/2/3 of the 3 layers transparent or disappear in order for us to edit something hidden inside a box.. you get what I mean.

Hi, My first post so forgive if I do something wrong as i am new to all this. I am amazed that some people say they have no bugs, they are very lucky. I have loads. The most annoying has to be the servers, I can't play levels with any more than 2 people or the whole thing just goes into meltdown, disappearing into scenery, lagging, freezing altogether, it's atrocious. The next worst has to be level builds disappearing even after saving. I recently did about 3 hours work on a level, saved several times ( yes the save icon at bottom left did appear) and when i when back to it the next day everything had disappeared which left me totally peed off. Also keeps saying i can't save my profile and i have to delete stuff or levels but even when i do this, next time i look they have reappeared. I have even deleted 6 or 7 complete levels and it still says it. It's doing my head in. There are lots more bugs but don't want to go on too much. I'll just leave you with the latest ( has anyone else had this ) when i play a level with a friend sometimes the pod changes i.e. a friend joined me and we played a level but when we returned to my pod it had their decoration !! It was still my pod because i had control but it looked like theirs. We had to go play another level and return and then it was back to normal. This has happened several times since. Any ideas ? Thanks for reading and any help would be appreciated. BTW do MM get to know about the bugs through these posts so they can try to fix them because I don't know how to let them know. I,ve tried emailing them direct but never had a reply. Thankyou.2009-01-21 09:48:00

The glue function is really annoying and it's not just the whole level falling apart bug.

Sometimes when I glue stuff together some of my other objects (like automatic doors and jumping platforms) stop working because it accidentally got glued along with everything else. Then when I detach it I end up detaching the piston too causing me to wire the whole thing over again.

EDIT: I just found a new annoying thing. Spending 5 hours creating a level only to have the WHOLE LEVEL completely wiped the next time I turn on the PS3...

- Not infinite strength of pistons/wobble bolts/ motor bolts truly annoying and unneccecary, if I put it to strengt 10 it should move anything I bolt to it, now it wimps out if you put something moderately heavy on it

- Not being able to edit something when there is something in front of it. Can sometimes be quite annoying, though mostly avoidable with a bit of planning.

- Slow rewinding when connected to the internet. I have to leave the game to (dis)connect due to me having a wireless connection, I can't just pull the plug

Definately tryin to work around "this object has become to big"

I definately agree (see what I did there?) because there shouldn't be a limited 'bigness' of an object, because that defeats the whole purpose of 'Create Anything'. By the way, I love the game, this is just one minor annoyance.

Well although it does get annoying, the object too large thing is reasonable. There is a distinct technical reason for the limitation. If the engine has to move around an object with a gazillion polygons it will likely cause your PS3 to crash and burn, which is not a good thing.

Some other things that are annoying are because of developer choice or something completely mysterious (why o why does LBP need to contact something on the internet to rewind in create mode?). These annoyances are stupid (to a certain point, MM people are human too and somethings are a matter of taste) and CAN be fixed.

The object too large or thermometer too small things are unlikely to change. Good design ethics will save you from it anyway.

MM said that lag is caused by people with poor connections.
It certainlt is... Because I've played with people in Holland and America and there wasn't any lag, whereas when I play with my friend from London it lags insanely

The most annoying thing about LBP is probably the game not saving. I hate that.

Ofcourse the lag, and the white screen which lasts 2 minutes...

I agree with the H4H thing as well as the ridiculously small profile size, but there is one thing that ticks me off more than anything. I may not make any friends on this one, but the whole "passive experience" attitude of players and creators is what gets me. Great, your level looks gorgeous, however, I didn't buy this game to look at peoples art projects. I bought it to PLAY IT! Don't get me wrong, looking good is part of a good level, but the other parts, mainly engaging gameplay, is almost completely non-existent. I was so psyched when I heard this game was coming out because I've been so fed up with the gaming industry as a whole. Game developers are churning out generic garbage that practically walks you through the game. I haven't played a current generation game that was actually challenging (aside from Mega Man 9). Maybe some FPS's are tougher, but what about the people that do not like shooters? Well, I thought LBP would be the cure for this but it seems that most of the community has the same attitude as game developers. Pump out assinine eye-candy with no actual substance. Any thing to get plays, right? Well I think it's terrible. So often do I read of a creator that had to dumb down the difficulty of his/her level because so many people complain. This is especially irritating when it was a level that wasn't even difficult in the first place! I was hoping for more variety, but it seems that all the generic media out there has left permanent stains on people's imaginations.2009-01-22 20:27:00

The glue bug. Definitely.

I dont have any issues with the glue function itself..... it takes some getting used to, mostly so I dont accidentally glue something to the wrong thing, but.....

That blasted bug. WHY they havent fixed this yet I dont know.

There's just nothing more frustrating than doing to remove ONE tiny thing, or one PISTON for that matter (what does that have to do with glue?) only to have stuff fall apart.

Even worse is when it happens.....but I dont know where. Editing a level recently, which is big, I tried to remove ONE piston to fix a small error, I remove the thing, and then I hear: clunk....clunk..... THUD CRACK, and I had to look all over the place to find out what had just happened.

Oh, and one other thing: the TEXT LIMIT. Argh.

WHY cant we use the same amount of text in word bubbles as in the main levels? There's no logical explanation here. Im so sick of having to use TWO talky-things to say something that should fit in ONE. Aaaaaaaaaaaagh. I haaaaaaaate that. Not as irritating as the glue bug, but have to deal with it so much more often.

Oh, and finally: Trophy levels. Yeah. 'Nuff said.
