Super Mario Bros. 4 Development Diary

Im sure when Little Big Planet was announced way back when most of us wanted to eventually make Mario levels and I've decided the time is now for me. At first, like many, I wanted to recreate Mario levels. But in time I decided I would be better off just making my own original levels with Mario elements. There are a few creators on LBP2 who have recreated perfectly Mario 1, and Mario 3 levels, so its something thats already been done and I couldn't do a better job then they did. So I've decided do a "Christopher Nolan" and put my spin on it. I didnt see the need to just recreate Mario levels anymore. As you will know doubt notice in the following screen shots Mario is not a hologram animation or any animation at all. He simply a sackbot dressed up as Mario. I decided to go this route because it simplifies things greatly in terms of level design and the sackbot can use LBP2's default powerups like the powergloves to advance the gameplay. I suspect I should be able to do some very creative things with the creatinator. Im calling it Super Mario Bros. 4 because it still retains pixel enemies and environments but adds a 3D Mario sackbot. The current plan is for 10 levels, all with a different theme. The 1st is 99% finished. Only a little more playtesting to squash any unseen bugs is all thats left to do. I would have loved to make it bigger, but the thermometer is working against me. I know I can level link, but IMO that breaks the flow and continuity. I'd much rather sacrifice level size to keep the experience seemless. I'm hoping the other levels come along faster as the foundation has already been laid. I've spent alot of time tweaking the 1st level, everything from the size of blocks, Mario, camera zoom etc until I thought it was just right. The difficulty is sort of hard, but I do not have 50 levels like a traditional Mario game to slowly ramp it up. If the first few levels are a walk in the park where is the challenge in that? http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa223/Holt2007/APhoto-2.jpg http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa223/Holt2007/APhoto_1-2.jpg | 2012-11-14 18:52:00 Author: bluearth Posts: 100 |
I want to try. Also, If you're really tricky, you can just make a green tube trigger a level link, it won't look all that bad. I doubt anyone would think negatively about it. I'd find it clever. | 2012-11-14 23:10:00 Author: RonPierce Posts: 131 |
