2014 Update: Going Digital
Make sure everything important to you is stored in a published level!
I mention backing up your work later in this article, and recently personal experience has taught me that the only way to really make sure your creations are saved is by storing them in a published level. Because of a disk drive problem in my PS3, I recently switched to the digital version of Karting. I found that the digital version creates new Save Data on the HDD, and apparently the Data from the disk version is not compatible. Since there is no way to back up or import your "profile" like in LBP2, when you go digital you're starting over. Loosing costumes and Karts is a disappointment, but loading up and finding you moon empty could be heartbreaking. The good news is that everything published on your Earth will still be there, and you can copy those levels to your moon.
Fortunately I had almost everything useful I ever made in published levels, but the things I did loose are something of a set back - not to mention a real rage inducer.

The Older Info:

I'd like to give a few tips about LBPKarting Create, and highlight some very important differences from LittleBigPlanet in terms of saving your work.
If you created in the Beta, then all this will be familiar. If you're deciding whether to buy the game, you might want to read this first to avoid frustration later.

Instead of Rewind and Fast Forward, you have Undo http://wiki.lbpcentral.com/images/0/01/L1_button.png and Redo http://wiki.lbpcentral.com/images/1/1a/R1_button.png

Undo feature only applies to the particular editor you're currently using. Once you've exited that editor, you will not be able to Undo. For example: You've created basic track and decide to use the Vertical Shift tool. While you're in the Track Editor you Undo and Redo - but once you return to your Popit menu, you lose the ability to undo those changes.

Normally in LBP, when I'm going to try out some major changes to my level, I'll press Start and Save As to a new location on my moon. This becomes even more important in Karting because of the Undo limitations.

See what did there? The limitations are undue

Save As feature does not exist in Create. The only way to save your level to another spot on your moon, is by returning to your Pod and using the Copy feature. Do this every time you've made progress that you don't want to risk losing before.

It takes a bit of time to keep going back to the Pod and making copies, but it also could save you the aggravation of making a non-undoable mistake right after you've achieved something brilliant.

Capture often when you're creating your own objects, don't rely entirely on level save files. I say this because I recently encountered a bug some creators may remember from beta, in which the objects in a level rearrange themselves. It sounds crazy, but it's true.
Pieces of material actually become scattered around the level, and decorations can also move in relationship to the material they were placed on
It may help to Save from the pause menu before exiting the level, instead of simply returning to your pod and saving when prompted.

There is no Back Up Profile feature. What you can do instead, is to copy your Karting Save Data to a USB stick or other external storage. Then if needed, you can delete your Karting save data and replace it with the version backed up on your USB stick. I have tested, and found this works. You can also publish a level for storing your creations, then copy to you moon if needed. Note that you don't have to make the level copyable for other players in order to copy it yourself.
If you copy to another profile on the same PS3, everything on the moon will be deleted.
If you don't have an external storage device, I strongly recommend buying an inexpensive USB stick for backing up game save data.

The Trouble with Microchips
We know and love them from LBP2, but don't place too much trust in the Karting Microchip - like inlaws at your birthday party, Karting Microchips will overstay their welcome.
I recently built a lot of objects with Microchips holding Sounds and Effects Emitters. I found that sometimes when I place one of these objects and then later delete it, the Circuit Board from the chip will reappear after I've exited and re-loaded the level. The chip isn't there, just the circuit board - and everything on it works, so in my case I had random sounds and effects popping up in my level.
The Circuit Board cannot be deleted. It can be closed, but that doesn't get rid of it permanently. All the logic has to be deleted individually. This isn't so bad compared to other problems in Karting, but if you've got a lot of logic on a lot of unwanted Circuit Boards, it's time consuming.
To make things easier, I recommend that any large Microchips be placed on another chip. This way if you have the glitch, you can just delete the large chip off of the other chip's Circuit Board. It's much quicker than stripping away loads of logic.

And... When you've saved an object that includes a Microchip and then take that object from your popit, sometimes the wiring has disconnected itself. Most often this occurs when you have wires between two chips, but it can also happen within a single chip or between a chip and an object.
If an object you've saved has logic problems, check the wiring. I've created one object with some very simple logic and no matter how many times I redo the wiring and capture, the logic is disconnected next time I place the object.

Great tutorial! Definitely some things there to consider while creating. The return to pod / save a copy is a process I've always used way back to the days of LBP1 and especially PSP, but it's a critical step to point out that a lot of people never even think about..

Also, undo vs. undue.... *groan*

If you don't have a USB to transfer your save (or if it doesn't work for whatever reason, i haven't tried it) You could copy your save onto another User on your PS3.2012-11-13 20:40:00

Jeje, this technique saved a whole level from doom in the BETA. It is extremely recomendable. Sad thing we have to do this in every LBP game.2012-11-13 21:12:00

Speaking of saving, it's a good idea to note that if you're like me and are creating a track with specific elements that you'd rather design first (like say, your track takes place in a supermarket which you'd like to build first), then create a standard loop track off to the side that you can delete later so that you can actually save your progress to My Moon. You can't save without a track.

It's probably common knowledge, but it would be good to know for people who would rather conform the track to a specific world design. This is good for tracks that are more "off-road" too since the actual track will be invisible in the end anyway.

I assumed that copying to another user profile would be an easy way to back up information, but I did a test and found that everything was erased from the moon!
The good news is that I also tested saving to a USB stick, and all the levels on my moon were intact.

After my fist trial in create mode I found after spending 45 minutes putting in terrain I had what I thought was a pleasing result.
Went to lay some track over the top, pressed follow contour and ended up with a tiny oval circuit, then found there was not way to undo or remove it, not happy about that at all.
Pity I hadn't read about the undo problems beforehand and how if I had backed up to a USB stick I could have resolved the problem.

Wow, has this game got some really basic problems, problems that should of been sorted before it was released.

You can repaint your track or even reset it from the first page of the global settings. Or did the loop already mess up your sculpting?

Also, since you can't save a level without a track in it you pretty much have to lay one down before you can even start backing it up. Although, you could make an arena and later replace it with a track, then you wouldn't have to deform the terrain. So uhm... never mind.

It hadn't deformed the terrain, it just went straight into a loop, closed the circuit, then auto saved, screen went blank, then I found that I went into hover mode.
I tried undo = Nothing, tried delete/remove start position= Nothing plus a whole heap of other things, nothing would either alter or even partial remove this oval track.

I think I should wait until they fix this game before trying create again, too many things need fixing and altering to make user friendly, it's just a episode in frustration ATM, so much so I could see myself not playing it again if I continue getting these stupid things happening.

Plus create needs 2 GRIDS, the first down the sides of the create area so you know where the hell you are relative to Nth-Sth-East-West, and a second that shows where within this first grid track can be laid down.
At present you can contour terrain close to the edges of the create space thinking you can lay tracks over it, but when trying you find that the track laying area is a lot closer to the center of the create space [Or further from the edges of the shown create space - same thing- different terminology]
Which is hopeless if you want to get designed track elevation with pre laying terrain, then use Follow Contour to lay the track on this terrain.

Blackwiggle, I believe that you are pressing the wrong button to lay down the track. "x" (when R is gas) auto-completes the track and this will form a loop every time from the beginning. Hold down gas (R) to lay the track, and then you will have control over the track's placement.

There is NOT a glitch that prevents you from erasing a track. As Roger said, you can either erase it in the first page of global settings, or you can repaint it with a tool in the track edit menu (using gas to lay the track not auto-complete). Undo in the editor will not remove the track and neither will playing with the start line.

Roger, painting a road over a terrain element does not erase the terrain element - the road elevation just takes higher priority over the terrain. If you moved or erased the road, your terrain sculpt would reappear!

The track editor is dense, complicated, and cumbersome, but it isn't as glitched as most people seem to think (other then the freezing issues). If I did not have tons of experience with the MNR editor and some experience with the LBP editor, I would be lost. Unfortunately, modding in 3D is complicated, time consuming, and hard! The only console games that have ever gotten it right were the FarCry games.

Yes, I recall that happening a TON to me in the beta- however I've been fortunate enough that it's only happened once on my Train Sim. Project! I must say, to all newer creators on LBPK, that that is a MUST! If you don't you'll end up having the re-align everything perfectly, which can sometimes be a pain if you cannot remember something's exact position.2013-01-26 22:06:00

Hey, might be nice to expand this section with the information from https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=77804-Special-requirements-for-transferring-data-to-new-PS3. That the costumes, karts, moon levels and presumably pods (though I haven't tested this) are stored in the game data section, and copying your save data will only save your story/collection progress. And the only workaround is publishing levels.

As far as the shifting of object I believe I found when this may happen. When exiting out of create mode and if you haven't saved it will ask you to Save, yes. No and a cancel. I CANCEL and select "Save" in the pause menu. Not sure if this is 100% accurate, but it was happening to me a lot till I started saving only by this method.2013-02-09 03:49:00

Interesting, I often save both ways and have only seen this problem once in the full game - but the one time it happened in two copies of my saved level at once. I saw the problem in my latest save, went to my previous save copy and found the glitch had affected both levels in the same way.
I've added your suggestion - even if it doesn't work 100%, at least it'll help some people.

Luckily all of these I do all the time naturally, I've always had a fear of save problems ever since my PS3 crashed and I LOST everything. It's good to know these tips though, thank you! 2013-02-12 16:49:00

How do you copy your game data?

PS3 game menu, scroll up and you'll find Save Data and Game Data folders. Plug in a USB stick and copy the Karting data from these folders by pressing Triangle.

Uhm, yeah... I checked again, and no matter how much I wish you were right, the options menu for a Game Data file does not have a copy function. It's just Delete and Information. 2013-03-28 23:25:00

Right you are - only the Save Data is copyable
