How can I fix breaking pistons on rotating objects?

Archive: 11 posts

Hey, all, I do a lot of top down stuff. I really wanted to use a hidden piston for some effects, but I'm having an issue. Whenever I have a piston attached to an object anytime I rotate it the piston stretches and totally screws up. I have it stiff and 100% strength. Is it possible to fix or just something I have to accept as a flaw?2012-11-12 05:36:00

I think this is just part of the way the game is, sadly. Hell, it's hard enough getting Pistons to stay straight on a moving object, let alone a spinning one.
Although, are you sure you couldn't just substitute your Piston for some Follower Movers, Tags and a Look-At Rotator to keep the same appearance of moving to and from the main object?

Yeah, I can likely do that, but I was just hoping to do this for simplicity because it works better than tag followers for what I was trying to do for clean look, cause followers have lag. It's a moving and turntable object. Ill likely just change the whole workings because piston only truly gave the effect I liked until it started distorting itself 2012-11-13 14:18:00

What material is the piston attached to? How strong it is depends on what it's connected to (annoying "feature")...it might hold up if connected to say metal instead of sticker panel, etc.2012-11-13 14:29:00

...and a large piece of metal at that.

If that isn't an option, you might be able to create this object or effect another way. Maybe if you show us what you are trying to do?

Ah, yeah, I had forgotten about that. Yeah, different material types effect the strength of the Connectors attached to them. If you're using Basic Cardboard, switching to something like Blue Wood gives your stuff a much more durable strength. Your Connectors will still buckle, but less so.

Only one end of the Connector needs to be attached to a more solid material for this to work, so the extremity can be left as Cardboard and you'd still achieve the same result.

I was origionally using it for a tom down model (using sticker panels and decorations) where it was Holo connected by piston to another small holo, with a piston to another holo. The end holos had legs attached to it (for a wolf) and they would move toward and away from the center holo. It was set to on movement it would go in and out, and looked very much like a wolf running, but if you turned your legs would drift out of whack.2012-11-13 16:24:00

Create a large ring of invisible holo that extends beyond the objects that are pistoned to the spinning center. Use more holo to glue the ring to the center. Then stick invisible, stiff pistons (yummy!) from the outer ring to the pistoned object to reinforce its orbit around the center. These extra pistons don't need to work; just set them to a large max/min value, stiffness and 0% strength; they are just there to keep stuff in place.

Additionally, if this is still giving trouble, maybe add some chains as well (they should move with the center pistons, though) but stick them under a diagonal angle from all sides to counter the rotational forces that displace the pistoned object.

i found a spring on either side of the pistion set to 0 strength and stiff would do the trick! in my recent level i used this top stop a large piece of metal with a spinning cog attached to it from falling on the player while moving left and right above him.2012-11-20 13:57:00

I have found sometimes that using 2 pistons side by side helps. If you're using a heavy material, use an anti-gravity tweaker to make it light.2012-11-30 12:03:00

If you're not opposed to using glitches, you can obtain a compression tool and use it to layer several pieces into the middle section to increase its density/mass. In situations where I've had no other recourse, I've used that as a last resort to strengthen weak connectors.2012-12-01 23:11:00
