Veterans Day

Archive: 6 posts

Established in honor of the armistice of WWI, Veterans Day (or Remembrance/Armistice Day outside the US) is a holiday established to recognize our armed forces veterans, who've risked and lost their lives in order to preserve the freedom of the United States, Europe and other countries abroad.

I won't be doing much today since everyone's not home yet, but tomorrow I'm planning to visit my grandpa's grave; he died last year. He served during the Vietnam War, was nominated for the Medal of Honor, and earned the Vietnam Cross. And about every man in my family has served in the armed forces, so if fate were to have it I'd also end up joining the ranks.

It'd be an honor if anyone would like to share any stories or memories of their relatives who've served in the military.

My Poppop served in World War II. Signed up right after Pearl Harbor, went to Germany, fought in the invasion of Africa, invasion of Sicily, and D-Day. All of which were the biggest invasions in history when they happened. Got wounded in D-Day I think, and he got back in time just for the Battle of the Bulge. Lost a piece of his stomach in surgery, so he went to take care of POWs at the end of the war. Served till the victory over Germany, then got the hell out of there before they sent him to Japan. Dunno if his luck could last much longer :/

He used to tell stories about it all the time when I was younger. Now, he's 93 and in a Veterans Hospital up in Pennsylvania. I just moved down to Florida so I can't really see him this year, and I worry I won't be able to see him again... he's gotten pretty bad. Up until a few years ago, he was able to function relatively well, even bowling at the age of 89- and getting way better scores than I could get. Still a pro at checkers, even with his memory loss I can only beat him half the time >_>

He's one of those from the "Greatest Generation". I admire him and all those he served with. You're very lucky to have him.2012-11-11 22:11:00

I'm not a US resident, but I hope this is a day to respectfully remember all the fallen of all the wars.
The people who gave their blood for their Countries (whatever the Country is) with the firm belief of granting a better future to their sons.

To those who fought and bled for the right causes, whatever nationality they may be. Let's hope human nature improves to a point where violence ceases to be necessary, and victims of war become a thing of the past.2012-11-12 13:32:00

Being from a military family I know the sacrifices the Veterans and their families make.
Heart felt THANKS to all those who stand, or have fallen, in their service to others.
