Basic level creation tips ?

Hello, I am discovering the Create Mode and am fully newbie (I did not play the LBP/LBP2 games). I am using the official inline tutos to learn. I am now fairly familiar with basic materials and most widgets. Despite that, I feel very awkward when trying to create. My issues are with the basic manipulations and overall design method. For example : * sometimes materials seem to glue together automatically which I do not always want, and then when I delete the second one, the first is usually eaten where the second one got stuck ? * tuning an object after selecting it does not seem efficient : do I really need to apply it (x) then exit (o until I am in the popit again) then select the cursor then cursor over the object then tune ? * sometimes I try to catch part of the creation (to move it further) and I catch a bigger or smaller part than expected (typically in the Frank tutorial) ? * catching with x or with a finger is not always the same ? Also I hesitate on the best way to start a level when you have it "on paper": do you start from the bottom left of the screen then up and right, do you start from your entrance ? Would you recommend some online videos that would show a sample level creation, to put all the step by step information from the tutos together and show real manipulations ? It does not need to be a technical level with logic and so on, since my issues are more on the materials and selections. Despite that, I feel very awkward when trying to create.Creating can definitely take a little while before you will feel fully comfortable with all of the tools but don't worry, it's a very fun process. It's addictive as heck too, so be warned. You may not sleep much for the next.... well, forever. There are loads of general creating tutorials all over the place, but my general advice is to first think of the thing you'd like to create and second figure out how. Picking a tool and seeing what you can do with it is an exercise in futility. Just choose something (e.g., sports car, pony, arcade game, piece of music) and see how close you can get to making it perfect. Most importantly, HAVE FUN. sometimes materials seem to glue together automatically which I do not always want, and then when I delete the second one, the first is usually eaten where the second one got stuck ?This is happening because you are running into one material while "drawing" with another. Whenever you do this, two things happen. 1) the second material erases the first material wherever it's in the way and 2) the two materials are automatically glued together. The solution is to not overlap the two materials when you are drawing them out - create them separately, move them together afterwards, and glue them together (assuming you want them glued). tuning an object after selecting it does not seem efficient : do I really need to apply it (x) then exit (o until I am in the popit again) then select the cursor then cursor over the object then tune ?No, you don't have to do it that way but I actually prefer to. Your other option is to tweak the object (with the [square] button) before placing it down (with [X]). If you do that, every copy you make of that object will have the same settings. For example, if you are placing 15 sound objects that all use the 'fart' sound effect, you'd pick the 'human body' sound object and before placing it hit [square]. Make your adjustments however you like, and then stamp it down 15 times with [X]. Presto, 15 fart sounds. sometimes I try to catch part of the creation (to move it further) and I catch a bigger or smaller part than expected (typically in the Frank tutorial) ?I'm not sure what you mean here, but it sounds like you are selecting multiple objects when you just want to select 1 or 2. It could be that you are 1) drawing your selection box too large or 2) perhaps the objects are glued together. For 1) hit the 'start' button and select the 'front view' option. That will give you a much better idea of what you're actually selecting. For 2), just unglue the objects from one another with a short press of the [triangle] button. catching with x or with a finger is not always the same ?It should be the same. You might be having the same issue as 1) above. I think most people prefer to start from the bottom left but you can build it any way you like. Don't forget that you can also move around the entrance to wherever you like. Dang it- Taffey beat me here. I already made the reply, whatever... Some quick tips: 1. Selecting and editing materials is not as hard as you think. I don't know what you mean by "catching" materials exactly, but it sounds like you either haven't learned to pause yet (up on the D-Pad pauses in create mode) or you just need to make things static (press square on a material to tweak, and change the uppermost thing to the mountain icon). I never use my finger for selecting as I feel it's too imprecise, I always use the popit. 2. Materials never glue themselves together unless you create them inside eachother. For example, if you have some stone, then you put a fabric square inside it, they will be glued together. If you are trying to put materials side by side, it is nigh impossible to get them perfectly next to eachother without using the grid or having to move it with the popit afterwards (press start and drag the grid to one of the on positions to use it). 3.To unglue a material, just tap triangle with it selected. Hold triangle to delete all parts that are rigidly attached. 4. I think you are talking about planning out levels. Since this is your first LBP game and you are just learning the create mode, I'd just start from the entrance. Things probably won't work out exactly how you have them in your head, and if you start from there you can always adapt. Really, all it takes is some time to learn the controls. I'm not gonna say you'll be a pro in a week, but you'll definitely feel more confident in the basics after just a little time creating.
