Quick Review from Current Experience

Archive: 1 post

(( If this doesn't belong here, then this can be moves somewhere else. ))

Now I've been waiting for this game for quite some time, and paid off the pre-order despite it's slightly surprising high price. (I was expecting like, $40 but I digress) And now that it's in my hands, I can say that so far, it's definitely worth every bit of the money I put into it.

First of all, I like how it sticks to the way LittleBigPlanet 1 told it's tales, with the arts-and-crafts/storybook hybrid style. All of the levels have a excellent charm, and make racing in them all the more wonderful. And I can still remember a good deal of most of the tracks I raced in, as well as the music that played. Oh, lord, the music is great. From remixes to originals, as well as the licensed tracks all fit the game as snug as a fresh pair of socks. And the characters are pretty charming themselves! (Save for Vernon, I really dislike this one. :/ ) From starting out, to adventuring with a turtle all while fending off the Horde is just simply joyful, fun, and adorable.
As for customizing your kart and sack-chum, it's pretty fun, and offers many variations, but it does have some flaws. For example, you can't place stickers/decorations in certain places on karts, and on certain parts of your sack-chum. This is a rather unfortunate hindrance, but I can easily look past that in a lot of cases.

Now for the gameplay itself. I see a lot of people try to compare this game to Modnation, simply because it's from the same studio. And they have the gall to use this as an excuse to give it low scores. This is obviously a bunch of crud, since game developers all made games that were vastly different from each-other. LittleBigPlanet Karting has enough going for it so that it isn't like Modnation, save for the whole "Hey let's wait a few seconds after 1 until we say go" malarkey. And about the combat: I LIKED IT! It offered more tension to the races, and a new level of strategy to the game! Do you go all out and risk getting shot yourself, or do you go defensive and use mostly speed to keep ahead of the pack? It adds a surprisingly satisfying experience to racing. And how the kart and sackperson are basically ripped to shreds from a missile or hazard is terrifying, but oddly satisfying to watch. Although we could nerf the green weapons a bit more. Maybe give us an indication that they're coming as well, or slow them down? Anything to give us a chance to save our hides there. Also the Blue Shel-I MEAN Missile seems to hit me even when I'm not in 1st place.
Aside from that, the combat is better, in my opinion, then what people let on about.

And basically, the only thing that LBPK has with Modnation here is the way the track is paved. The rest could be comparable to other create-a-tracks in other games that allow it. And it gives you a lot more options than Modnation's. (For example, you can make houses and other things, while you have to buy all those extra parts as DLC. Hurp. )

While I'm still not finished with the story, (or my vocaloid-inspired track) I can easily say that right now, LittleBigPlanet Karting at least deserves an 8.5/10, or 4 stars.

It's not a Mario Kart Killer or anything of the sort, but it's a blast to play, and I'm certain that I'll be wasting even more of my precious lifespan making silly tracks and battle arenas.
