The LBP Grand Prix project
Archive: 29 posts
After seeing (and buying!) LBPK, one thought went through my head (and likely 60000 others' heads as well) was about making a Grand Prix, a set of tracks for which to have players races on and enjoy in a varied amount of level tropes. But unlike everyone else, I wanna see this kinda thing done right, and not go terribly wrong. As such, is why I'm making this thread. The idea is simple enough: Create a circuit (or set of tracks) for players to race on, in which in set for a specific type of level trope for each one, made to look and race well when played. For the GP, it should have 4 tracks at the least to go by (and maybe up to a bigger amount if things go well), with each one being different from the last, in track design and level trope. It just makes sense to have a decent set of tracks, right? For this to work, we need to get some good tracks built. As such, how I figure it should work is about like this: we start with one basic idea (or trope, either/or) for a track, and for a set amount of time, people make tracks fitting the theme. The one after the time is up that people like/enjoyed the most, which will be determined by a vote, will be the one to end up being used in the GP itself for that spot. Then the process repeats until the GP is full and good. Afterwords, an arena/track (whatever works best) will be made to show off credits for everyone involved in the project for tracks and all that fun stuff. Even I'm gonna get into the game (figuratively and literally) by both giving track shenanigans a shot (got some practice goofing around with the editor, so I got some idea of what I'm doin'....I hope.) as well as also checking out tracks myself so as to see for myself like everyone else. Anyways, if enough (ie. at least a couple) people are interested in giving this bit of madness a try, I'll start off the first thing in the OP, and then we can begin from there.....or at least, I hope for once we can.... | 2012-11-07 20:44:00 Author: Unknown User |
This sounds really interesting man! it kind of reminds me of what they did with Hansel and Gretelbot!! I really would like to see this game succeed! There is too much potential, Everything about the game amazing!! dispite the little flaws. but dude ill so be apart this man | 2012-11-07 21:43:00 Author: Unknown User |
That's awesome! If a couple more at least are game for this, then I can start things off, and then let the fun begin! | 2012-11-07 21:53:00 Author: Unknown User |
I think we should at least do a mini theme or colaboration just to get this going it could just be 2 track, ya know. maybe if people could see the work we produce maybe they'll wanna join in | 2012-11-08 22:23:00 Author: Unknown User |
Perhaps we could do so. We should get at least something done before we likely get things goin'. What do ya have in mind to start off with? | 2012-11-08 22:27:00 Author: Unknown User |
I dont know at the moment just messing around with the sculpting, yeah... this where I thought youd play the creative director! lol. I like the idea of having a set theme to work with. | 2012-11-08 23:20:00 Author: Unknown User |
Maybe we should do a basic first track to start things off, like a "qualifiers track" in which you'd normally determine the eight racers to go about the GP fully. But what of the theme....? | 2012-11-08 23:46:00 Author: Unknown User |
when you say qualifier track do you mean something like, Luigi Raceway, the beginning track should I say?? | 2012-11-09 00:00:00 Author: Unknown User |
Yeah, but it should fit like the beginning of an overall theme for the GP, like an island, or an ice place, or a desert, or ect. | 2012-11-09 01:12:00 Author: Unknown User |
okay I get you!! I have a track in the works at the moment I throwing something, together so you can see what I am able to do!! | 2012-11-09 02:02:00 Author: Unknown User |
Alright then. When I can in a bit, I'll try to add you to my friends thing so we can work together....or at least hopefully make stuff work and look alright... | 2012-11-09 02:07:00 Author: Unknown User |
Wow this sounds like a great idea if love to get in and help out. I have a couple ideas to contribute. I just started messing with the editor so if you had a time limit I might not be much use lol. | 2012-11-09 06:57:00 Author: Dfw86 Posts: 138 |
lol nahh there is no time limit man, that'd be awesome of you be in this!! I was messing around with the tools as well, and realized to you literally have to sculpt eveything you want, it was a bit overwhelming at first. I think what we need is a set theme or idea to play around with to get us started. | 2012-11-09 07:15:00 Author: Unknown User |
I get that. As such, let's just move onto the overall theme, and first track theme......as such, we need ideas for how to go about the overall theme, to ensure a variety of tracks and also to ensure it flows smoothly... Suggest away then. | 2012-11-09 07:50:00 Author: Unknown User |
Well would you want to do a realistic one like a world tour? We could do tracks based in Europe, America, Mexico and such. All we need to do is design a race track then as we put in objects just add the Eiffel tower our say the pyramids for a Egypt track. We could also design the track to race throuhh or around these landmarks. Or would you want one more like Mario kart?? We could just take a game and create our own levels and themes from scratch or use themes from lbp levels. Maybe do a tribute to legend of Zelda and do several tracks based on some of the temples. Also I think the first track should be simple. Easy turns with lots of drifting and/or ramps. Almost no obstacles so the player kinda gets warmed up to the Grand Prix. | 2012-11-09 09:10:00 Author: Dfw86 Posts: 138 |
After a while, I figured out a perfect overall theme for this: Basically, racers are transported to a huge island, where they have to race through the tracks on it, from a beach, all the way to a dangerous track on top of a volcano. We could have stuff like some ruins, some river rapids to race on, a cavern, abandoned mines, ect., ect. You guys think it'd work well enough? | 2012-11-09 20:16:00 Author: Unknown User |
Sounds good to me. But why are they transported there? Some alien or old island god wants to watch them all race for fun? We need a little story to get ppl pulled in. Also we could make some kind of alien or god dude hangin out in the back ground or flying over the track following you through the race. | 2012-11-10 01:00:00 Author: Dfw86 Posts: 138 |
I'd say make it like one of those reality shows: Racers going there to try to win grand prizes, while racing across the island on its tracks for all to see. Add in cutscene-like mid-level thingies with cheesy race announcers and stuff, and you're set. Also, need PSNs or a way to find you guys on LBPK if we're gonna start this off. | 2012-11-10 01:13:00 Author: Unknown User |
My psn is dfw86 just hit me up or message me on here | 2012-11-10 04:45:00 Author: Dfw86 Posts: 138 |

Sounds like a boatload of fun, but I'd doubt I'd have enough time to get it all done. I'd definitely love to make AND race a huge grand prix since story mode was kind of fast and easy to complete. | 2012-11-11 00:02:00 Author: Plokster Posts: 35 |
Sounds like quite a few so far wanna help. Once we get the first track made, from then on, you all can go about making tracks based off of whatever is said for the next theme for each track, seeing which one is best. | 2012-11-11 00:31:00 Author: Unknown User |
Hey i shot you 2 friend request Hey also i finished that track I told you i was working on, I want to be able to show you guys my abilities with create! but i am still down to make this grand-prix happen | 2012-11-11 14:25:00 Author: Unknown User |

How would this work in terms of linking the races together? I love the idea of a GP mode and races... but when you finish a race now, there isnt a 'level link' to another track is there? Or a way of keeping score to see who is in the lead overall? | 2012-11-22 15:48:00 Author: TheAdipose Posts: 533 |

Or a way of keeping score to see who is in the lead overall? Well there are leaderboards of course so all someone needs to do is write down the leaders/scores for each race. | 2012-12-01 06:40:00 Author: anarchowolf Posts: 194 |
This is a fantastic idea (the idea for the GP). How about a GP based upon the evolution of human civilization? You could start off with a caveman/Neanderthal/primitive man track, then go Bronze Age, Iron Age, Middle Ages, Modern Times, and then a "Future" track for the finale. Just an idea. | 2012-12-02 04:53:00 Author: Wigriff Posts: 118 |
