That Feeling.

Archive: 7 posts

You know...that feeling.

So...For reasons too stupid and labourious to get into, i decided my kanji gallery needed a teleport system...you know, instead of just letting people fly about on jetpacks...'cause when i want punishment, i'm all for 3rd and 4th helpings.

So i scrap my long worked on jumppad elevator system (but i kept those freaking doors...oh you'd better believe it) and got to work kitting things up. It all seemed so simple...i mean, what's a teleport system but a long distance version of Compher's sackbot checkpoints. Of course...now the level would need controllable bots...so i kitted them up. And i, of course decided they needed to be able to cycle emotions...cause...oh gods, why. Which, of course doesn't work with the poppit, which the players need to access so they can actually get the kanji they want (sticker switch, natch), and so all that work figuring out how the emotion system works was insta-scrap....

What i'm saying is i sunk alot of time into something in the long run incidental and unnecessary, just so i could get to the point of placing the rooms i've made and finish knocking together the remaining ones on my list...

And so i get it all put together and it's testing time and...

Right, something's gumming up the works (and it was always happening on the 4th floor, which was kinda appropos). And test and think as i might i just could not figure out what the problem was...

Getting frustrated here, is what i'm saying.

Then...just before i had to leave for work today, pop, and there it was...the stupid little mistake that was throwing everything off (if you can believe it, it was a tag i'd forgotten to colour change). So i race against time, fix it up, change to play mode and do one last test and...

Yes....

It worked like a charm, slicker than hot chilli though a sick duck's nethers....

There is no finer feeling than getting to the bottom of and fixing something that's been frustrating the hell out of you.

Too true. Well it's true once you get over the face palm feeling that you get when you realize that it was all because ya made a silly mistake in the first . D'oh2012-11-05 12:00:00

Preaching to the choir here. So many times it's been the case where I'm tearing my hair out looking for a solution to a problem, turning the air blue..... then it turns out that it's my own stupidity that has caused the problem.

One thing that tends to lead to a lot of problems for me is when an output leads to multiple inputs - eg a tag sensor activating multiple tags. If I want to add another input for that output, sometimes instead of connecting the wire directly from the output to the new input, or copying it from an existing input, I'll accidently remove one input and move it over to the new one.

Is that some crazy Japanese saying?

Is that some crazy Japanese saying?

Naa, just one a mine.

i really thought i was being better about keeping things organized this time around too. Put together a 'chip with all the tags and sensors i'd be likely to use, with notes attached to make sure i'd remember this colour was this floor and all that. And i have to say it has made a difference compared to when i just winged things together on my last level...

Still...a lot of my playing tends to be either right before work, when i'm logy and stupid, or after work, when i've had a few beers or some wine, and neither of those states lends to clear thinking. Saa... at least i'm learning a bit more about how to put things together, with this one i realized there were a ton of redundant sensors and logic bits that (i think) i can trim out without affecting things too much (if at all...i hope i hope).

It kinda sucks...i feel like there're all these ideas i want to try out and levels i want to build, but...sometimes it feels abit late in the cycle...not that i want a ginormous number of plays on my stages or anything, but...

Well...with luck, LBPKarting will draw some more folks into the fold.

You wouldn't have had any trouble if you had used a controlinator based teleport system. Player controlled sackbots are an unnecessary complication, when you can simply allow the player to play as themselves instead.2012-11-13 03:18:00

Hrrmm...colour me interested, but...i'm not sure i have any idea what you're talking about, actually...i thought the only way to get a player from A to B without killing them was to use bots? Please mind i've been AF-LBP for about a year or so, so if there's been some revolution in technique, i've likely missed it.

....

Okay, this is just off the top of my head but... would what you're talking about be something like, forcing the player into an 'invisible' controllinator when they enter the 'porter, using a follower to zip them to the desired location, then forcing them out of/destroying the controllinator? Purely from a presentation standpoint, how would you cover-up the enter c'nator effect (mind i'm using a glass-fronted 'porter).

If i'm thinking right, i think i can see the logic in my head, though if you might elaborate more, i'd be delighted.

thanks again all, and have a fine evening.
