New Ways to Find Good Levels

Archive: 5 posts

For most of the community that does not read sites like this, finding good levels is like finding a needle in a proverbial haystack of cruddy shark survivals and Mario. If you are lucky, you can find maybe one or two good levels at the top of the cool pages, but most likely it will be dominated by something with a catchy title, but is ultimately dreadful.

The team picks are always great, but oftentimes a level is fantastic, but isn't team pick material for whatever reason. For these reasons, I think adding another category would be a boon to the community. The category would operate much like the spotlight here does. Developers and trusted players (not sure how this would be determined) could vote to put a level into the exclusive "Good Levels" category, or some other cutesy named category. Once put in that category, the level would remain there for a week or so and then be cycled out for other good levels so the list remained fresh.

This would serve to reward creators who have put time and effort into creating fantastic games with plays, as well as providing a place for the community (especially those who don't visit sites like these) to see some of the latest good levels without having to wade through the excessive amounts of junk found elsewhere.

I'm curious to see what people think, or if it is even feasible at all. Or perhaps you have your own great idea?

Right... The problem is, you say...

The team picks are always great, but oftentimes a level is fantastic, but isn't team pick material for whatever reason.

That reason is almost always copyright-related stuff. StevenI had already told us that developers didn't want to emphazise levels that may contain content protected with copyright, and if we created this other section it would be useless as it shouldn't contain this levels as well.
I know there are lots of other level without copyright stuff that maybe are not worth a team pick, but are worth lots of plays. Anyway, I do believe that Community Spotlights and good advertising can make a level get the plays it deserves without the need of this category.

There are actually a lot of great looking levels that rarely get played. "Plumber" by horiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii is a very attractive level although the train bit is a bit boring.

When I'm looking for a quick decent/good level I use search and type "JPN" - Japanese players tend to put a lot of time/energy/effort into their levels, but most of the time their levels go unnoticed.

To be honest, I'm not certain that most of the community even looks at the Spotlight ever. Even if the levels in this section were mostly Spotlight levels, I believe that just the added accessibility still serves a purpose to bring new good levels to the community that would otherwise likely not see these levels.

The one way I could see this not working is if, as you stated, there are not enough original levels out there to sustain such a column.

Edit: Searching for Japanese levels is a good idea, but it seems like a poor workaround of something that is a larger issue.

I just wanted to mention that we've been discussing with Syroc ways to give the Spotlight a bit more exposure in game. We haven't got a hub to go in the in-game news (unlike the position for the PS3 spotlight) but Syroc has come up with something which we hope will help. He's put a notice in the LiveArea with a link through to the Spotlight thread on the site. This has been translated into all languages apart from Japanese and Chinese. I know it's not perfect as some people won't want to link through but it's a definitely a step in the right direction. 2012-11-04 12:12:00
