Does this game a have a shot to be successful?

Archive: 14 posts

I'm only asking because it is looking promising and I am tempted by it, but am afraid I will get burnt by a quickly dead community. This game looks like it has a grim amount of hype surrounding it for some reason, and the LBP franchise is built and reliant on a strong and bustling community.

Is this game going to fail in the sales department?

Well, from what I see, since the last four LBPs have been doing rather well, I don't see why this would tank.
And we're finally getting a proper LBP racing experience instead of people holding down the grab button to make the car go woosh.

...well, that and making one with so much confusing logic that you burn out, get stricken with rigor mortis, and then explode into sweeties.

I'm not sure if it'll do GREAT in its first week sales, but it definitely won't bomb. Although I live in the US, there are tons of gamers in the UK who are crazy about LBP. I think there will be plenty of community levels to play.

Just look at LBP Vita for example... It really didn't sell THAT well (partly due to not many Vita owners) but there are still tons of levels being made. Now look at how many PS3 owners there are and the millions of copies LBP1/2 sold. Those people will PROBABLY be interested in a LBP karting game.

That is... if Sony advertises it.

It will sell well enough to justify its existence but probably (hopefully) not a sequel.

I think in hindsight, Karting will be seen as a deviation from "real LBP". However, some form of Karting will inevitably be integrated into future "real LBP" titles, because we've wanted something like this for a long time. Just not separately.

I am curious whether, down the road, Karting is remembered (or misremembered) as a huge success or a dud because of the inevitable integration.

Not an expert, but profit-wise, Sony and everyone should be quite happy if Karting sells 1/3 as many copies as LBP1 or LBP2. But since I really do believe the Karting aspect will be added to future LBP games regardless of this game's success, it's actually BAD if the game sells more than that. Because then there WILL be a sequel, fragmented and separate from "real LBP", and that means it could take much longer for fans to see true compatibility across the franchise.

These aren't Mario games, and I worry that with each new and separate title fans are being conditioned to treat LBP like Mario games: a new one every year, requiring a new purchase, with little to no cross-playability, and a separate community. That's not what sold me on the franchise.

Karting won't lose money. But I hope it doesn't earn very much, either. If that makes sense.

I agree with what you said. I want the franchise to succeed, but I also want a potential LBP3 to be capable of all this too. I honestly don't think we will see a lbp3 within 5 years though. I'm really curious as to what MM's new IP is that they are saying is more ambitious than even LBP...Hopefully something create based still.2012-11-02 04:33:00

I wouldn't go as far as some of you wishing this game won't do great financially. I think the game developers deserve that with the hard work they've put into LBPK.

Why not just enjoy the ride and the variations of games we're getting? I've said it before, if we got LBP3D after LBP2 there would literally be nothing else to accomplish/do. What could they possibly make in a LBP4 that they didn't in 3 besides adding a few tools and gadgets? The series would probably come to end. I think Karting is a great transition in testing how Sackboy works in a 3D world, at least while Mm is busy. It keeps us fans occupied.

I don't have many opinions right now because the videos out now look improved from the beta. I actually wouldn't mind a sequel if it does enough to improve the game as LBP2 did to LBP1. It's not like karting is going to be implemented soon into the main LBP franchise imo. It would be great if it did, but that's a pretty high bar to be setting.2012-11-06 02:15:00

I was the only one I saw who showed up at Gamestop to get the game at midnight (Everyone else was for Halo 4), and the launch announcement for the game on the official PlayStation blog only has comments saying the game is bad and they want ModNation 2 instead. Hope the game does well despite these signs.2012-11-06 17:47:00

Honestly I dont think this will replace the LBP2+LBPV.
It has some interesting potential (fully 3D editor) but it is not so comfortable to use it as a 2.5D one. For example how the hell can I rotate the logic stuff on the microchip? It says it should be Dpad left/right, but no button is doing that.
Also it is way too easy to create plain boring racing levels. So Im afraid that like 99,9% of published levels will be just boring race track. So anything little bit interesting (3D non-racing levels) may end up buried.
I guess people will stick with LBP2. Much simpler, but still very powerful edit tools are making it easier to create levels. And because platforming levels are not automated, there is nice variety of the minigames.

My girlfriend and I were the only ones out of about 90 People at the Halo release there to pick this game up. It's a really fun game so yes I think it has a major shot to be successful. There are some definite things that need to be fixed though. The shield system is atrocious, you'll block 1 rocket only to be hit by 1 or 2 more. Get bumped into by a passerby and your kart comes to a complete stop for some inexplicable reason. There are no weapon powerups, what you get is what you get, no upgrades. I think if they just revamped the shield system and made it more reliable the game would be infinitely better. As it stands I imagine the game will catch a lot of flack for at least the power ups and poor shield.2012-11-07 18:52:00

Even after playing the beta endlessly, I'm surprised at how fun the game is. I spent many hours playing it last night and stayed up much later than intended.

Yes, you get hit more, but you also get to hit other players more. I like the way they balanced it.
