Player lives

Is there a way to limit the number of lives each player has in your level?
The spawn point grants you four but then every checkpoint refreshes those four...so is there a way to disable the refresh but keep the checkpoints?

My first thought would be use infinite checkpoints but have counters that increment every time it is active and no player is found in the level. Then when the counter is at max put it to either activate another checkpoint or game ender.
Edit: As for changing which checkpoint you are at, I would emit a tag called "checkChange" and all the checkpoints that don't have a sackboy around them (using player sensor) will deactivate via selector. You will have to have some way to let the player know how many lives they have left (i think you can just use a note with input set to the alternate).

Advance logic is too advance....I'll stick with the 4 lives thing as this is my first level and this will only complicate this way too much for me.
My thermo is already at 50% in both the starter level and the linked level...
