Exclusive Target Racer and Kart

Archive: 25 posts

This afternoon on Twitter there was a conversation about the various pre-order deals that exist for LittleBigPlanet Karting. Michael kindly confirmed the previously announced (https://twitter.com/michaelbuffaloe/status/263745223845359616) bonuses: a red Formula One (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formula_One)-style racer that is Europe-exclusive and the Kevin Butler, United Front Games, and Headstart packs that will appear in all regions.

There was still some question about what individual retailers actually offer in North America, so I poked around a bit. GameStop is definitely offering the Headstart Pack, Kevin Butler, and UFG sets (http://www.gamestop.com/ps3/games/littlebigplanet-karting/100170). At the time I checked, Best Buy and Amazon were not listing any bonuses. Walmart has just Kevin Butler (http://www.walmart.com/ip/Little-Big-Planet-Karting-w-Preorder-Kevin-Butler-DLC-Pack-PS3/20636415).

What's particularly interesting is the offer at Target (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Target_Corporation): no mention of pre-orders, but there's an exclusive costume and kart included with purchase (http://www.target.com/p/little-big-planet-karting-target-exclusive-playstation-3/-/A-14278014#prodSlot=medium_1_1&term=Little%20Big%20Planet%20Karting):

This is clearly a restyled version of the racer costume which is currently a European pre-order exclusive! Which would explain why North America hasn't been offered that set: Target certainly has some sort of exclusivity arrangement with Sony Computer Entertainment America. The only mystery would be why SCEA never mentioned it!

This is likely to become a pretty rare item since Target only operates in the United States and Canada--and I don't think their Canadian stores have even opened yet! Not to mention that most people will not be looking to Target for their game purchases. Something to consider for hunters of uncommon doodads! The regular red racer will probably be purchasable on PSN in the future, so American collectors will have an opportunity to use both designs.

I doubt the marketers that came up with this considered the feelings of the international LBP community or the developers that would have to do extra work to make this compatible across LBP2/Vita/Karting, but it is an interesting option. The corporate logos aren't very flattering, but it does seem strangely appropriate for the racing profession!

This is very interesting. I'm confused why not even Canada will get the UFG guy since UFG is based in Canada...2012-10-31 23:10:00

I don't think the developers get much say in pre-order deals other than making such deals possible by creating content. It's up to Sony's American marketers to sign the exclusivity contracts and all that, so UFG being Canadian doesn't improve the DLC situation for Canadian gamers.2012-10-31 23:17:00

Thanks for the heads up! Definitely considering pre-ordering at Target instead of GameStop.2012-11-01 05:18:00

Ehhh... this doesn't seem as good as the general set or the VP set.

The arcade cabinet is definitely great! This Target kart could be pretty nice with some sticker work, though, while I don't see myself driving the cabinet or golf kart. Of course, in beta I liked the blimp so who can say what wheels will win? 2012-11-01 19:03:00

Yeah, unfortunately, I never was able to participate in the beta, so I don't know much of what karts would be available from the get-go. :c

Blimp sounds pretty boss though.

GameStop only has the UFG, KB, and Headstart packs according to their website (linked in the first post). Amazon has updated with the KB set (http://www.amazon.com/LittleBigPlanet-Karting-Playstation-3/dp/B0050SX00Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1351907750&sr=8-1&keywords=LittleBigPlanet+Karting), Best Buy still has nothing.

The Target racer doesn't look to be a pre-order thing at all. They don't mention pre-orders anywhere and the graphic pictured above states that it's included with purchase while supplies last. Hypothetically, you could go to Target next month and still find a copy with the exclusive set. It depends on how many copies they get versus how many people choose to buy the game there.

That may make Target's offer more enticing for anyone that doesn't pre-order in the first place. I imagine at least one kid unwrapping LBPK during the holidays and still getting the Target set.

Plain red racer is Europe only, yeah. Target kart is the closest anybody in North America can get. This is surely part of Target's deal to keep the design exclusive to them for a while.2012-11-06 00:13:00

Darn, I was really hoping to get that red racer! Well...all hope is gone. Perhaps this red racer will be super exclusive since everyone just about is going to have KB and UFG dude.2012-11-06 03:15:00

Has anyone come across more information about this Target DLC as in is it actually true? Here's my Target Racer hanging out in my LBPV pod. I'd say it's for real.

Well I'd say your best bet is to have a friend or family member in the states pick one up for you, and have them do it quickly. Make sure also that the case has the little "Target DLC" icon on the upper right side of the front cover.

Does ordering from their website (http://www.target.com/p/little-big-planet-karting-target-exclusive-playstation-3/-/A-14278014#prodSlot=medium_1_1&term=Little%20Big%20Planet%20Karting) not ship to Canada? They might charge you an arm and a leg, but it seems like they'd rather make the sale than quibble over geography.

Personally, I went out of my way to physically visit a Target but failed to leave with the game. They claimed to have six in stock but the shelf was empty and none of their employees could figure out where they might be! As the whole site was quite dim and dreary, I was content to depart and download the game off the PS Store sans bonuses.

For the record, Michael mentioned the Target set on a PS Blog post (http://blog.us.playstation.com/2012/11/06/littlebigplanet-karting-out-today-watch-the-launch-trailer/) this week. Although digital pre-order bonuses weren't mentioned in the blog itself, comments indicate that people who pre-ordered on North American PSN received UFG and Kevin Butler sets. Since opportunities for pre-orders are well past, anybody desiring uncommon wearables will need to deal with Target in North America (for just the Target racer) or scrounge up a special edition copy in Europe (which has all the pre-order stuff).

Its says towards the bottom of the page only shipping to 48 States... I just might be in luck though but probably not... I happen to be out of town working currently and there's actually a Target in the city I'm at! I didn't even know Canada had Target stores yet since they took over Zellars! So I'm off in my search for the Target exclusive!2012-11-09 03:06:00

Good luck on the hunt.

Looked into Target's policies a little more deeply and they definitely aren't a fan of international shipping. Seems a bit odd for a company planning to operate hundreds of Canadian stores by the end of next year!

:kz: Any chance this'll be a Buyable DLC? If not, I'll just Trade in my copy of LBPK & about $15 for the Target Version. Looks pretty sweet.2012-11-17 02:09:00

I'd say there's a good chance the racer will be in the stores at some point, but without the Target logo. So if you want that, you need to get this.2012-11-17 13:50:00
