Say what you like, but the above picture was taken in LBP.

Okay! So I've recently begun a pretty ambitious project. I'm thinking about publishing it as a tech demo later, but at the moment, it still needs a bit of polish.

The speedometer, tachometer, and radio all work. There are six gears. The arms move the steering wheel, and they also work the radio. Letting go of the accelerator makes you slowly roll to a halt; brakes slow you down much quicker. Movie cameras are used for special effects (jolts during gear changes, tilting head, vibrating car, etc) and the look of passing streetlights are imitated.

As I'm going for a pretty realistic look, the effects change according to how fast you're going. If you accelerate, the streetlights pass faster, the handling becomes slightly slipperier, and the camera slowly zooms out to simulate the effects of g-forces.

So far it looks pretty good, but there are still some things to be done. For example, most of the dashboard is currently made of cardboard. And I'd like to add a roll cage, using decorations. Also, I'm thinking that the acceleration is a bit too quick, considering it takes something like 12 seconds to reach top speed (201 kp/h).

Oh, and for some dumb reason, a controlinator I used glitched randomly:

http://i2.lbp.me/img/ft/1a202a9fc72817db3faa57912f9a2a8cc35ffca2.jpg

The wires go straight from the button outputs to... wherever they go, my logic's messy, kay?!

The top speed is that low because I was too lazy to add more digits to the speedometer. So instead of adding more numbers, I just made up the excuse that you're actually driving a modified hatchback.

Okay, so I'm starting to wander now. I better stop typing.

Im very interested in this concept. I've experimented with 1st person vehicles before but always found it too overwhelming. My suggestion is that if you have too many problems filling in the interior where the cardboard is just zoom the camera forward so you see more of outside and less of the inside. One of the reasons I had to do this was because of complexity issues.2012-10-27 05:24:00

Good luck to you too!... with whatever it is you're doing.

Oh? I'd be very interested in seeing how your car looks. Judging by your profile pic on LBP.me, you look like you'd know what you're doing.

Anyway, I've changed the look of the dashboard, so it looks smoother. The panel between the radio and the starter buttons is now gone. The radio itself has become smaller, so now it looks more like the arm isn't extending out to the other side of the car... because that would be creepy, no? Also, it now mostly consists of white plastic and weathered steel. Looks goooood.

But instead of showing the actual dashboard, I shall show you this picture of some of the logic:

http://i2.lbp.me/img/ft/9125fe5731a5f330b6c4e66481c89ee4ad79966b.jpg

...Mostly just because I don't have a recent picture of the dashboard.

At the moment, I'm in need of a title and a way to make it look like you're moving forward. I'm well aware that I could attach in/out movers to objects in the 3D background, but that wouldn't really have the effect I want. I could use the varying speed of hologram animations (the preset ones that can have their speed tweaked) on large 3D pieces of hologram, but that kinda looks weird. You see, there's two 'layers' to the animation; the big, thick bars that move quickly across one way (the effect I want), and the thinner, slow moving lines that move the other way (the unwanted layer).

I suppose I could use a different material with animations (starfield, the grid glass thing), but I want other details to add to the effect of speed too. So, yeah. Suggestions?

Oh yeah. Somehow I forgot to mention that my good friend MeGA8940 remade this song in LBP:

...Only somehow he managed to make it sound awesomer. So anyway, he let me use it in my level. It sounds awesome together with the revving engine. That finishes my post.

Sounds cool but there isn't any mention of the clutch? It's half the fun of driving.

Sorry, when I said vehicles I meant aircraft. I dont have any experience with car cockpits.

Your logic looks intense! I knew it would be crazy.

Is your car original or based on a real model?

Well, at the moment the transmission is on automatic, so yeah. No clutch right now. But yeah, I'm really really really hoping to eventually work out how to make it manual. And if I'm feeling smart, then maybe I could figure out how to switch between automatic and manual through the use of a main menu of some kind. But it's probably gonna be difficult, as my logic is sorta unorganized and I'm currently using a positional sequencer and a speed scale timer for the gears... which I now realize was a dumb move. While a clutch seems like a pretty simple thing to implement (you know... a toggle switch leading into an AND gate), I'm not really sure I could pull it off.

Oh, and... I'm willing to say that I don't really agree with the idea that clutch is 'half the fun of driving'. Whatever.

Well, yeah. It is intense. Partially because of my poor organisational skills.

The car is totally, 100% original. Maybe because I don't want trolls saying stuff like 'Fords (or whatever) dnt hndl leik dat!!1!'

Oh, and I've found that skipping a couple of numbers in the speedometer gives a nice effect, and makes the logic easier to handle. So some of the numbers are gone. 001, 002, 004, 006, 007, 008, 010, etc have been deleted. Those of you who have played Midnight Club Los Angeles will understand what I mean when skipping numbers looks good. The numbers look like actual numbers, not random blurs. Also, it gives the effect of seeming all digital and... stuff.

I've made the dashboard and driving suit look grimier, and I'm trying to find a suitable animated material for the barriers on either side. And the layout of the dashboard is slightly (very) different. The radio is slightly smaller and moved a bit to the left, and a few panels have been added, moved around, and deleted. I've also started on making the interior look more like a 'modified hatchback'. The level looks better in action... you know how LBP photos are.

Teh post ends here. No, here.

Well, it had to be on an angle, otherwise some of it wouldn't have fit on the screen. Thanks dood.

Anyway, I'm currently trying to figure out how to implement the manual transmission I was speaking of. Maybe if I can't find a way to make this into a decent level, I'll just publish it as a tech demo.

It's difficult. To say the least. Because if I was to make the transmission manual, I'd have to find a way to make the engine stall or something when the gear is shifted too early or too late. If I wasn't to do this, then people would just mash the gear shift button to get right up to gear six. Then, of course, I'd have to make the acceleration slow down as you neared the red line. So yeah. Difficult.

Also, I've started another project (a versus game), because I'm stupid. Now stop making fun of me. But this project is definitely far from finished. I shall continue. :kz:

Pretty slick. Looks beautiful. Can't wait to try it out.

By the way you could just say it's in mph and presto chango you just increased you speed by over 50%! Or use a lbp unique speed of grids per second

I had one of my 'stupid moments' (which happens quite often) and I published an unlocked version of this thing a few weeks ago. So if you really want to, you could try it out. I'm not willing to post the link here, because then some people might complain about how the handling is sorta weird.

I haven't been working on this a lot for a while, because I've been busy working on another level. This time it's a versus level (the first one I'm actually trying to make), and it's about 75% (?) done. Once I've got the said versus level done, I'll continue working on the manual transmission from time to time.
