Play/Completion Ratio
Archive: 9 posts
Okay, so when I look at my levels, they only get completed about 30% of the time. Does that mean people get stuck? Or is it just rage quitting people? Does anyone else find that, in fact, not many people have completed their levels? And what about a Play/Like ratio. I think this could give an interesting view on the quality of levels, because actually, quite a few of the copy levels don't have many likes. What's your best level's play/like ratio? | 2012-10-25 16:29:00 Author: bluesteel789 Posts: 159 |
Well, according to LBP.me, my Battlesnake level has only been completed 29 times out of 3,252 (total) plays. I find this a bit odd, since even if you die and fail the game, it still sends you to the scoreboard. Maybe it's something to do with the fact that it's multiplayer? | 2012-10-25 18:24:00 Author: Ali_Star Posts: 4085 |

Ultimately these stats only draw a partial picture of what's going on in the minds of players. Conditioning makes them commit to levels in different ways. Genres muddle the stats too: survival challenges that throw a player back to the checkpoint instead of the scoreboard are going to get tons of plays and virtually no finishes. Someone might vote Yay as a marker that they enjoyed a level they didn't have time to complete, come back the next day, find they're bored of it and un-Yay it and quit. That registers as two plays, no votes, no finishes... and no solid insight. I've seen people seemingly love a level, especially groups, who keep restarting and play vigoriously for an hour, only to get to the end and go all slot-machine toggling between Yay/Boo (or Yay/Nothing now), and finally exit on nothing. And then, there are vast numbers of players who hop into levels and quit after a second because they're going for the cumulative play trophy or pin, and a bit's as good as bundle. And as Ali_Star points out, despite people finishing levels sometimes the stats just don't register. LBP's search and ranking systems are notoriously inconsistent, though, so it should be no surprise that their stat tracking is wonky too. I've ranted plenty about LBP as a social network, so I'll stick to the short form: kids are everywhere on this thing, and it IS a social network, and it's subject to all the arbitrary nonsense of kids and social network behavior. | 2012-10-26 03:13:00 Author: Unknown User |
I wouldn't stress too much over the play/completion ratio. The most hearted level of all time (http://lbp.me/v/exm6v/info) has a completion ratio of around 1:3. My level (http://lbp.me/v/xzbrgn/info) is no slouch and its completion ratio is less than 1:5 for total plays and 1:3 for unique plays. That means that out of everybody who's played my level, less than one out of three has finished it, and given that the total plays are more than double the unique ones, it's probably more like one out of four unique players actually complete it... and it's not a very long level. It can be kind of frustrating, especially if you have some sort of fancy finale that hardly anybody sees, but I find it comforting to know that most levels are in the same boat: it's just not that easy to get people to stay in a level until the end, even if it's a great level. | 2012-10-26 10:25:00 Author: Sehven Posts: 2188 |
If these low stats are accurate (especially when looking at Kawalshis's level), it makes me a little worried about the level I'm currently making. It has 30 stages! Though, I suppose the good thing about it is that there will be some sort of "save progress" option in it, so it will warrant repeat plays, and hopefully people will see it through. Is the completed stat only for unique plays? | 2012-10-26 10:55:00 Author: Ali_Star Posts: 4085 |
Well I usually exit the level right next to the scoreboard, since I never know if the level is going to force me into another level. Since that annoys me so much. | 2012-10-26 17:39:00 Author: lve_msg Posts: 408 |
That seems a bit pointless.... why not just quit when you enter the next level? | 2012-10-26 18:31:00 Author: Ali_Star Posts: 4085 |
That seems a bit pointless.... why not just quit when you enter the next level? So you won't have to suffer the loading time while going through the level link, or risk being separated from your friends if there are multiple people in your party. | 2012-10-27 02:10:00 Author: Kalawishis Posts: 928 |
