Doctor Who - Levels
Archive: 16 posts
Yep! You read right! I'm going to start working on Doctor Who themed levels for LBP2 as soon as I get my PS3 connected again! However, creating Doctor Who themed levels will be quite difficult for one reason. There are literally hundreds of Doctor Who episodes out there, so deciding which episodes I want to turn into levels is difficult. For this reason, I'd like to narrow it down a little. First of all, I am not doing levels based on episodes, I'm going to make them based on stories. Stories include single episodes, two-parters, three-parters and all the way up to six-parters, so here's another thing to narrow episodes down. Since I haven't seen nearly all of classic series episodes, I'll narrow them all the way down (err... up?) to the New Series episodes, starting from the episode "Rose" up until the episode "The Angels Take Manhattan". Also, there are certain individuals I can't make for... well, reasons. I don't have Bug Blaster, so I can't make Empty Child / Doctor Dances based level and to be honest, some stories wouldn't make great levels in the first place, so I won't make Midnight based level either, even though it was an excellent story and definitely among the top 10 stories of all time. Also, I won't make levels based on stories from anywhere but television stories, so I won't make a level based on "Eternity Clock" or "The Shadows of Vashta Nerada". Even though I have narrowed it down this much, there are still too many stories to make episodes of, so I have a simple solution: I'm letting you decide! Yes, you'll decide what Doctor Who stories among the list below will be converted into Doctor Who - themed levels, made by me. I'm giving you all three votes, so you can vote three stories in total and after some time, I'll make the levels of the stories that have gained most votes. If you don't remember the name of a story you like, I can tell you if you describe what happened in that story, or what was essential in it. Anyway, here's the list of the episodes (from first episode of series 1 to last of the series 7): S1: Rose - The End of the World - Unquiet Dead - Aliens of London / World War Three - Dalek - Long Game - Father's Day - Empty Child / Doctor Dances - Boom Town - Bad Wolf / Parting of Ways - S2: Christmas Invasion - New Earth - Tooth and Claw - School Reunion - Girl in the Fireplace - Rise of the Cybermen / Age of Steel - Idiot's Lantern - Impossible Planet / Satan Pit - Love and Monsters - (Worst episode of them all, closely followed by...) Fear Her - (...this) Army of Ghosts / Doomsday - S3: Runaway Bride - Smith and Jones - Shakespeare Code - 1 Gridlock - Daleks in Manhattan / Evolution of the Daleks - 1 Lazarus Experiment - 42 - Human Nature / Family of Blood - 1 Blink - 1 Utopia - 1 Sound of the Drums / The Last of the Timelords - S4: Voyage of the Darned - Partners in Crime - Fires of Pompeii - Planet of Oods - Sontaran Stratagem / Poison Sky - Doctor's Daughter - The Unicorn and the Wasp - Silence in the Library / Forest of the Dead - 2 Midnight - 1 (great story, but a bus doesn't make an interesting setting) Turn Left - 1 Stolen Earth / Journey's End - S4 Specials: The Next Doctor - Planet of the Dead - Waters of Mars - 2 The End of Time - S5: Eleventh Hour - Beast Below - Victory of the Daleks - The Time of Angels / Flesh and Stone - 1 Vampires of Venice - Amy's Choice - Hungry Earth / Cold Blood - Vincent and the Doctor - The Lodger - Pandorica Opens / Big Bang - S6: Christmas Carol - Impossible Astronaut / Day of the Moon - Curse of the Black Spot - Doctor's Wife - Rebel Flesh / Almost People - 1 Good Man Goes to War - Let's Kill Hitler - Night Terrors - The Girl Who Waited - 1 God Complex - Closing Time - Wedding of River Song - 1 S7: The Doctor the Widow and the Wardrobe - Asylum of the Daleks - Dinosaurs on a Spaceship - 1 Town Called Mercy - The Power of Three - 1 The Angels Take Manhattan - That's them! No, I'll not make a level about Love and Monsters or Fear Her, because they are both terrible stories, they'd be boring to make and they... They are just terrible! If you could think of a way to create Empty Child / Doctor Dances without owning the gasmask, or making a version of Midnight that wouldn't end up a simple bus ride, I can make either of those two stories into levels. Now, I'm not making the levels follow the plot step-by-step, not even close to it. I doubt there'll be plot at all in the episodes, but I'll make the levels so they are interesting to play, happen in the same setting as those episodes do and have the same villain as those episodes, if possible. I'll make the one story to get highest votes and maybe later I'll make the story that got the second highest number of votes and so on, depending on how those levels do. So come on, vote! Also, uhm... Don't vote twice or thrice on the same story. Much easier for me to count and it'd be more fair. | 2012-10-25 14:20:00 Author: FreeAim Posts: 2462 |
Hmmm... I'll vote for "Turn Left", "Utopia" and "Daleks in Manhattan". I tried to make some "Doctor Who" based levels back at LBP PSP, but the analog stick broke Anyways, it is a cool idea | 2012-10-25 16:24:00 Author: BillyCrash100 Posts: 134 |
Alright, great! Others too, feel free to vote, even if you're not a big Doctor Who fan, or if you have just seen a few episodes. Seriously, if episode's name doesn't ring a bell, tell me what happened in it and I say which one it is, if it's on the list. | 2012-10-25 18:41:00 Author: FreeAim Posts: 2462 |
I vote for either silence in the library (cool gameplay elements could be made there) or Waters of Mars just because it was a great episode and doesn't seem to difficult to come up with gameplay ideas (though I could be completely wrong) btw - fear her would be epic as a mystery. Platformer would not be the level though. Seems more like a point and click for that level only. | 2012-10-26 01:55:00 Author: koltonaugust Posts: 1382 |
Hi there. I wish you loads of luck with your project. I am a big doctor who fan. How are you appraching the design.... any help needed? | 2012-10-26 02:28:00 Author: Sean88 Posts: 662 |
Would I be able to help make a blink level? I'm great at sticker detail and costumes. | 2012-10-26 02:40:00 Author: Unknown User |
Help is appreciated right now, though now the only help you can give me are your votes. @Sean88 I attempt to make the levels look similar as the scenes in the stories/episodes. Also the one thing I aim to gain the most is to recreate the atmospheres that are presented in the stories. For Blink, for example, I aim to create a shabby, wooden house setting, though it's design would be more similar to "The House Which Science Built" than the actual episodes. For both, Silence in the Library / Forest of the Dead and Blink I'd make loads of light related obstacles and challenges, because in a game like LBP2, making them wouldn't be at all challenging and the fit the overall concept of LBP perfectly. Waters of Mars... Well, the setting would be a space-base on the surface of Mars. To bring this out, for example, I'd make windows/glass walls that show the outsides of the base as a red, sandy, rocky landscape. While the threat itself would be water-related. It's pretty simple concept to start building levels based around these stories from a scratch, but it works, while the results can be incredibly beautiful. @Suckapunch23 If the Blink level will be voted that high up so I'll make it, I could use some help in the overall design of making angels look like a serious threat, instead of cheap weeping angel rip-offs, but as for now, best you can do is vote for three stories max, if you want to, of course. @koltonaugust While platforming is what I aim for, either of the two episodes I said that I don't like at all could offer no goodies for that concept at all. Doctor Who is at its best, when the TARDIS lands in mysterious landscapes, interesting times (if landing in 2012 in "Fear Her" wasn't a dull concept already, the fact that it's already 2012 and the setting of the place was a neighbourhood makes the story near impossible to be captured into a platformer) or other fascinating settings, or if the stories offer something to go on. This is why Aliens of London / World War Three or even Boom Town work, since there is actually something unique in both stories. Also, not sure if on purpose, you forgot to vote for the third level choice. | 2012-10-26 08:43:00 Author: FreeAim Posts: 2462 |
Hmm...watching it now actually... lol...blink. Is it side scrolling? need characters designed? sets? look me up my friend. I can make you a cool TARDIS :-) I wish you lots of luck in this my friend, its a big project, Maybe select one epidode 'ROSE' and try to get an episode level done... Then take it from there if it is a success... I'm not knocking your idea in any way....its awesome, just get the gameplay in before commiting to ever episode. Join me and we can swap ideas. Good luck on this :-) My Choices i'd like to help on- 1. The Shakespear Code 2. Human Nature/ Family of Blood 3. Midnight (But as you say.you'd need to think up a dsifferent game style for this) | 2012-10-27 02:48:00 Author: Sean88 Posts: 662 |
I was considering some thing similar myself recently. I got as far as doing up some costumes and building working Tardis before I got distracted with another project. For your level, I'd love to play a Tennant/Rose level. Either an existing story line or something original. | 2012-10-27 11:40:00 Author: Chicago51 Posts: 258 |
Hi! I think I wrote in the main post, that I won't make actual storylines to the levels I make and therefore I'll neither have need for any character designs. The player is supposed to be the main character. If he wants to be the Doctor saving the world and playing the story as it was in the actual television story, he can. If he just wants to play through the level for gameplay satisfaction, he still can. The reason I won't make storyline is that if the level has a strict storyline and follows the actual stories step-by-step, non-fans will get the feeling of being left out. If the level has no strict storyline, players who have seen the actual episode and know what's going to happen can still enjoy it as a story, since it's still made after the episode and people who haven't even heard of the program can enjoy the level as a gameplay experience without being distracted with too much story. I try to make these levels appeal to everyone, not only a certain group of people. Also, as I'm now already commenting, to avoid having to post too multiple times on the same topic, I'll use my three votes too. 1. The Time of Angels / Flesh and Stone 2. The Power of Three 3. Wedding of River Song The reasons for the choices are, for number one, the setting, the angels and the treeborgs, for number two, the gameplay one can base around cubes (can be ANYTHING) and for number three, the Silence can make some parts of gameplay very scary at best and the setting is the best one can ask for. | 2012-10-28 10:29:00 Author: FreeAim Posts: 2462 |
oh I didn't realize I didn't say 3. In that case my votes are 1. Silence in the Library (you already counted) 2. Waters of Mars (again, already counted) 3. The Girl Who Waited Those three seem like they would give some pretty cool gameplay (I don't know about waters of mars though. It seems kind of plain gameplay) The girl who waited could become a puzzle platformer by going to different times that affect the others. What episode was the power of three? | 2012-10-29 04:04:00 Author: koltonaugust Posts: 1382 |
Well, this looks promising, I too am a big Doctor Who fan, and the levels I would really like to see made are... Blink-S3 Dinosaurs On a Spaceship-S7 Almost People/Rebel Flesh-S6 Thanks | 2012-10-29 05:59:00 Author: Unknown User |
@koltonaugust The Power of Three is the cube episode, where millions, billions of small cubes appear into the world literally overnight and the Doctor has to stay at the Ponds because he can't leave Earth. "Year of the long invasion". The cubes would not only grant many possibilities of gameplay, but they would grant almost infinite different possibilities, as the cubes can do anything from playing music, opening randomly, surfing net, hovering to even shooting lasers. They can really do ANYTHING. | 2012-10-29 13:20:00 Author: FreeAim Posts: 2462 |
Asylum of the Daleks,Dinosaurs on a Spaceship and the Vampires of Venice. | 2012-11-25 12:35:00 Author: Protoraptor Posts: 960 |
Thank you for still posting on this thread! I have a little bit o' news myself. My PS3 is somewhat broke in some way. I can still make the levels, but I can not publish them until it's fixed. I'll be updating this page as well in a bit. Remember to vote, even if it's between a giant ****** and a crab-sandwich. Byeee. | 2012-11-26 09:20:00 Author: FreeAim Posts: 2462 |
What a great idea! I'm really loving the idea of implementing Doctor Who in LittleBigPlanet! I found myself searching for DW levels a couple of days ago without luck , but maybe you could change that :hero:. Anyway, my three picks are: Victory of the Daleks Good Man Goes to War Wedding of River Song | 2012-11-26 09:56:00 Author: Niffan Posts: 11 |
