Odd Bug in VR Training

Archive: 11 posts

I ran across this a bit back. And this is likely a complete fluke and unreproducible.

So I was playing through the MGS pack's VR training level, after beating the rest of it. I stickered at the start and got the race/extra features going, and starting running through it.

Well, I got to the area where there are the walls you shoot to make drop, and trap doors in front of them. I blindly ran ahead and forgot about the trap doors, and so ended up falling to my death. That's when it went wrong.

When I respawned at the last checkpoint, essentially, the level completely broke. It's very hard to explain just exactly what. I think there may have been some sort of clipping that broke the physics engine or something. The whole level started...you know the battle with the Metal Gear RAYs on top of Arsenal Gear, when the RAYs start freaking out? Pretty much exactly like that, just the whole level. A seam opened up between the codec room at the VR section, the camera broke hinges and I could see around the edge of the level, and the Gekko from the previous room slid behind and started going through the death pit of the one I was trying to do.

More than a bit perturbed, I quickly restarted the level. No problems after that, and completed the level just fine.

So I'm wondering, has anyone run into anything similar? Or did I somehow run into a weird fluke?

Um... wow. This sounds unique. I have never ran into a bug like that, no. It's probably just a one off. Were you playing online or by yourself?2009-01-14 17:15:00

It was just me, by myself, offline. So no weird internet meltdowns to influence it.2009-01-14 17:16:00

Too bad you didn't film it. That'd be fun to watch.2009-01-14 17:19:00

Weird. It doesn't even sound like you did anything strange to cause it.2009-01-15 01:20:00

Hm... I wonder what it was...

Maybe it's because of the physics engine thing... see, normally, in a game, you could simpally change the game so that there's an invisible wall... meanwhile, in this game, everything is physics based- as such, you cannot program an invisible wall, you have to physically make something. Could be possible that a material in the mechanism accidentally broke, but even so, it should be made of dark matter so it shouldn't be a problem... :/

To me, I got the sense that somehow, two objects clipped. You know, as objects in computers have a tendency to go through each other, rather than collide. So that somehow started. And the physics engine didn't know how to handle it, and began spazzing out. "This object is pushing this object this direction. But it's pushing it this direction. But it's pushing it this direction! But it's...AHHH!!!" You know. That kind of thing. You can see weird things like that in some other physics-based games if you restrict force like that. See fantasticcontraption.com for a good comparison.2009-01-15 03:21:00

Um, not like this, no.

One time I was in a level, and I was trying to do this snow effect, so I had a bunch of emmiters shoot out "snow". Once I started the level (in Play Mode) everything started flipping out. The camera shook like crazy, so much that you could barely tell wahat was going on on the screen. My Sackbot went flying around everywhere and was bouncing off of things, and my head was shaking like crazy (both the Sackboy's and my own) XD.

Anyways, weird.

That happened to me in the Metal Gear REX level...

When it was shooting Missiles out of it's head, instead of going up, they just flew all over the place and blew stuff up and the level fell apart. Like, walls fell apart and the ceiling came down and everything.

Is it just a coincidence these level breaks are happening in the MGS levels?
I don't think they were as well tested as the main story levels.

In one of the MGS levels, I was one those cannon style spring boards and I got launched when it was aiming at its minimum, and I landed on top of one of the buildings. Normally you can't get up there. At the time I figured it was just a secret area with a prize bubble or something, so I went back through the level jumping over the buildings.
I stopped at the last one and saw there were a few blocks of dark matter with some visible switches on them.
Weird, because I haven't seen any dark matter on any of the story levels.

Perhaps MM was on a tight deadline?
