What do you think would happen to the LBP series if Sony went bankrupt?

Archive: 23 posts

Horrible thought, I know. But I'm just curious since the company overall hasn't been doing too well lately.

I see three options:

1. Nintendo or Microsoft buy the LBP IP for their consoles.

2. Sony becomes a game publisher and makes LBP available on several platforms.

3. The LBP IP is stored away. (Much like Crash Bandicoot or Jak & Daxter)

So what do you guys think would happen? And would you still support the franchise if the games came to another system?

I am not sure what will happen, but video game companies don't fail compared to most businesses. I know some have gone extinct, but video games will always make money. So you don't have to worry about Sony going bankrupt.2012-10-19 19:15:00

I'm sure that's what they said with Sega in the 90's. But yes, the PlayStation is arguably the most profitable branch of the Sony Corporation so I'm sure that's the last thing they'd cut off if something happened.

EDIT:

It's horrible how many people are getting laid off this year. Not to mention all the game studios closing down.

If they went bankrupt, Sony Computer Entertainment would probably share the same fate as SEGA. They'd quit making consoles and keep funding and launching games as a publisher. If things went waaaay wrong they'd close the department, sell their IP's and first-party devs and shut down the devs they couldn't sell.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves though. People being laid off is a bad sign, but it isn't enough proof that Sony is going to go down. When a lot of devs are being closed, producers are quitting en masse and the internet is buzzing with rumors of bankrupcy, then there's a reason to be afraid.

Not that Sony would ever go bankrupt, I'm pretty sure Microsoft and Nintendo would battle to the death for it.2012-10-21 15:47:00

I just want the whole industry to go belly up. But you know my thoughts on that.

As far as LBP, it would probably just disappear. I don't see Nintendo or MS buying it. Heck, Nintendo wouldn't buy it.

It doesn't have to be Microsoft or Nintendo buying up assets, there's still around half a dozen publishers that could buy some IP and studios.2012-10-22 18:06:00

You havn't been following the games industry news for the last few years.

The video games industry makes more money than Hollywood does, so for a game company as prolific as Mm to go under, it would take a lot. That being said, Mm would likely move on to another venue. They'd start making games for PC or another console, I'd bet.

Because Sony owns the rights to LittleBIGPlanet, they'd probably have to start fresh though... Unless of course, Nintendo or Microsoft purchased the rights to LittleBIGPlanet.

Media Molecule is profilic? They have only made two games. Two darn good games, but only two nonetheless. Or did you mean Sony instead of MM?2012-10-27 18:13:00

Prolific in popularity and quality, not quantity. It may not have been the best word to choose, but you know what I mean 2012-10-27 18:18:00

The games industry making more money than Hollywood hasn't stopped the near fortnightly mass lay-offs and studio closures occuring.

Sony own Mm so they don't just move on to something else. if they stay good and Sony recovers they'll carry on as normal, if they stay good and Sony doesn't recover they could be sold off and if they go bad ( most likely if key staff members leave and aren't replaced by new staff at a similar level of tallent) they'll be shut down if they get to the point where they're not worth funding.

But that's where you're wrong my friend; they are human beings, capable of doing whatever they want, so long as they continue under a new banner. They may change their name to something else and continue making games if they really wanted to. If Sony were to suddenly go down, any contract between them would no longer exist. The only thing Sony owns is their name and existing franchises.

All of this aside, if Sony sold Mm and all of the rights therein, none of this would matter--they'd obviously move on to make games for whomever they were sold to.

As far as I know, Sony won't go bankrupt as long as they sell Call of Duty games.2012-10-28 00:48:00

It's very rare to get a 1:1 move from an old studio to the new one. With around 50 employees they would be more likely to become several small developers with a few joining established developers.

Rare, yes. Impossible, no. You're right, they might break off into several small developers, but based on employee relations at Mm, I think many of them would stick together, if financially feasible, resulting in a new company slightly smaller than Mm currently is.

Of course, this is all speculation. It's hard to say either way what would actually happen. There's far too many variables to accurately predict any of this.
