First Level: Autumn Tree Climb

Archive: 11 posts

I just finished my first level: Autumn Tree Climb (http://lbp.me/v/f41e14)

The level is a celebration of autumn! Here in New York State peak leaves are the most beautiful time of the year, and I tried my best to capture nature's beauty in my level! The level has a few basic puzzles, but it is mostly platforming. There is a unique spider enemy and a few logic items that I am proud of.

The level took me over 40 hours to make, and I have already tweaked it 4 times to increase its accesscibility based on observations I have made watching other people play it. It might be my first Little Big Planet Level, but I took my time and really poured all my heart into the project.

Please try it out and let me know what you think!

I'm impressed that this is only your first level. It's colourful and charming. As I said in my in-game review, I love all your handmade creatures and leaves - they have a real Craftworld feel. There have been a lot levels recently that have relied heavily on the Autumn creators pack but yours managed to look different because you had made your own objects too.

The gameplay was pretty fun too but there were some areas towards the end of the level that could do with some tweaking. The main problem is the bouncepad at the foot of the last tree you climb. It took me about 20 goes before it bounced me high enough to reach the bird platforms above. I imagine a lot of people might quit at that point, thinking they would never make it. I think there was shorter jump partway up where the bouncepad tended to throw my sack against the tree trunk rather than past it onto the small platform but that wasn't such a big deal.

Also, it was a good thing that you added the hint about throwing the acorn onto the slide and catching it, as before the hint popped up I was wondering if the level was broken, This was in part because the first time you grab the acorn with the grabinators it tends to get stuck on the nearby checkpoint because you're in the wrong layer. This earlier experience meant that I assumed it was getting stuck again at the point you're meant to throw it, i.e. it looked like accident and not design.

Anyway, I had fun playing and for a first level this was a great effort. It really had bags of old style LBP charm.

EDIT: To add pictures simply copy the link from your lbp.me page and paste it in between code like this:

Make sure you click on the photo a few times so its at its maximum size (and not a thumbnail) at the point you copy the url.

Honestly, if you didn't say this was your first level, I wouldn't be able to tell it was. Visually it works well with your theme. The gameplay was a good as well, with nothing particularly challenging.
While my playthrough went smoothly enough, the were a some minor problems that added up for me overall. I had similar problems with the acorn logs getting me stuck on things, particularly a nearby checkpoint, but of course it coiled just sidestep it. The music seemed to disappear for a while. From when you encounter the first spider on to some later point, there's a noticeable silence that could be filled. Also, there were times when being able to see beyond the boundaries of the play area somewhat diminished the visuals. For instance, while climbing near the beginning, there's a point when you can see open space to the right side with only the gas that kills a player who falls down later in the level.
This was a great level to check out though. I liked how you utilized the objects in your gameplay. Great job on this.

Thanks everyone for the solid feedback. I knew that the first bounce pad on the final tree was frustrating to operate correctly, but I thought it was just my poor skill at the game (I am really bad). Now that I know it is a universal source of frustration I will tweak it. I know the acorn logs can get stuck on the checkpoints, and I think I have a simple solution in mind. Hopefully, I will get a chance to make these tweaks this week, but if not, I will definitely get around to it this weekend (assuming that I have enough space in my thermometer, of course).

bizkitboii, of course I will try out you level. I have it queued and will get around to playing it this week.

You did a great job with your 1st level, the Autumn visuals were colorful and relaxing I didn't finish the level though because unfortunately I couldn't master the 2nd acorn log slide. Keep creating, will be looking forward to more from you 2012-11-02 11:53:00
